Faith Formation Scripture Reflection "But the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and buried his master's money." This servant was scared. He didn't want to take any risks and just wanted to play everything safe. As he confesses to his master, "Out of fear I went off and buried your talent in the ground." And the master was not pleased. The other servants who invested the money he gave them were richly rewarded for their efforts to produce more. But this servant was punished for le ng his fear rule the day. What factors are keeping us from making a return on God's investment in us? He has given us all life, and each of us also has a special collec on of "talents" to make use of. We have certain gi s, skills, experiences, resources, and abili es that (though we may not o en think about it) come from God. He calls us to make the most of these things, not just to take them for granted or bury them in the ground, so to speak. Our gi s are meant not just for our own enjoyment, but to help others, to spread truth and goodness and beauty to the world around us. Some mes, however, we fail to really capitalize on our poten al. Laziness, distrac on, or self-pity can get in the way if we are unwilling to put in the hard work to improve our natural gi s, if we allow ourselves to zone out with entertainment or frivolous pas mes instead of making good use of the me entrusted to us, or if we wallow in nega vity by focusing on what we DON'T have instead of embracing what we do. Each moment is a gi from God. May we seize every opportunity to mul ply the investment God has made in us so that we may be worthy to hear God tell us, "Well done, my good and faithful servant." Fiat Discernment Retreat Fiat Ministries is devoted to encouraging young women to answer yes to the voca on to which God is calling them. Did You Know? Why do we pray to Saints? We really don't pray to saints as much as we ask them to pray with and for us. In the same way we ask other people to pray for us, we ask saints for their intercession and their spiritual assistance. So just as I ask my friend to pray, I can also call upon St. Peter, St. Augus ne, and St. Catherine and ask their intercession and their prayers. We believe that because the saints are already in heaven they are close to our Lord and can pe on him on our behalf for the graces and needs that we have. But why ask the saints for prayer? Why do we believe it is possible? One of the four marks of the Church (that we pray in the creed) is that the church is ONE, along with holy, catholic, and apostolic (CCC 811ff.). The Church--past, present, and future--is united in faith, purpose, and mission; we are one body, and in Christ all me and all people are united. This is the great communion of saints that highlights the unity of the body of Christ. As Jesus tells us in the synop c Gospels, our God "is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive" (cf. Lk 20:38; Mt 22:32; Mk 12:27). When we pray, we do so in union with the whole Church: saints and sinners, present and past, in solitude or community. We are one. Why is November called the month of All Souls? November 2, the Commemora on of All the Faithful Departed, dovetails with November 1, the feast of All Saints. The saints, our models of Chris an living, are one with God in heaven. All the faithful departed are those who have died with hope and trust in a loving God who calls us to greater growth and development, even beyond death. This growth and development occurs in a state of being that we have tradi onally called purgatory. While the Western Church has emphasized the cleansing and purifying nature of purgatory, the Eastern Orthodox Church has emphasized the growth and development aspect of it. Purgatory allows one who has died in Christ to con nue growing towards perfec on before mee ng our perfect God face-to-face. These November feasts vividly remind us of the rich reality known as the communion of saints. This belief stresses the strong affirma on that the church is always one in Christ. Death does not sever any of the bonds that unite us in Christ. That is why it is a fi ng prac ce to pray for the dead and to ask them to pray for us. Just as we do that for each other when we are alive, so, too, do we con nue that bond and concern for each other even beyond death. Page 6 StThomasWichita.com Service Blood Pressure Clinic Members of the Health and Wellness Commi ee will be available in the Church Library a er all Masses this weekend to check blood pressures. Weekly Stewardship Bit Prv 31: 10-13, 19-20, 30-31...1 Thes 5:1-6...Mt 25:14-30 Today we celebrate Commitment Sunday -- a day to wholly recommit ourselves our bap smal call to the stewardship way of life. How appropriate that we should be treated to the parable of the talents on this day! This gospel challenges us to use ALL God has given us -- however much that might be -- for the sake of His kingdom. One servant is given five talents, which is an unheard of amount of money. He wisely invested it and used it to double what he was given. Imagine if all those who were given so much chose to use it for the sole purpose of building God's kingdom! But what of the servant who received only one talent? He was afraid to lose it and decided to bury it instead. Some of us may feel that we haven't received much in the way of gi s from God. We may be si ng on those gi s, holding them close, afraid to lose what li le we've been given. Don't be!! The lesson of this gospel is quite clear. Give of yourself with a faithful heart and you will receive more to give! Live and give in such a way that at the end of your life, you, too, will hear our Heavenly Father say, "Well done, my good and faithful servant." Sing in the Christmas Mass Choir Are you looking to expand your Stewardship opportuni es and maybe grow into something new? Have you thought about joining a choir, but are unsure of the weekly commitment? Consider singing with the 9:00 a.m. choir on Christmas Eve. We will sing at the 4:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass, including 45 minutes of prelude music before the Mass. Prac ces are just star ng, so it s not too late to par cipate. Contact Tom Wierman (tom.wierman@copas.org) with any ques ons, or to volunteer. It would be helpful to read music, but it is not absolutely necessary. (If Christmas Eve doesn t work for your plans, this same opportunity will be available for Easter Sunday.) Retired Priest Dinner The Voca on Commi ee s 7th Annual BBQ for our re red priests was held on October 29. The dinner was held to thank the Priests for their lifelong service and their gi of self in their priesthood to us and to the Church. The STA Voca on Commi ee is chaired by Julie Lievens, and the BBQ was chaired by Nancy Wrinn. Thanks go to all of our members who worked hard to provide a joyful evening for our beloved priests.
