Page 2 April 24, 2016 Dear Parishioners, The Archdiocese recognizes the changing demographics and the fall in church vocations and income. Much of this has been discussed for 35 years! We are not alone with these problems. The City of Chicago and inner rim suburbs are dealing with crumbling infrastructure, demographic shifts and a poor economy. At St. John Brebeuf we are blessed in so many ways. We have a great school, beautiful buildings and large attendance at our masses and events. Our parish is very active and dynamic! But we have our issues too. Look around, the average age of people attending mass is 65 or older. The average age of those involved in ministry, Uncle Pete's Ministry, GLADD, ushers, readers, etc. 70+ years old. When you come to understand that ten people donated $600,000.00 of the million plus dollars collected for our capital campaign. When you realize that even though about three thousand people attend mass each Sunday, about five people donate over $200,000.00 annually to the Sunday offering. Put these facts together and you quickly realize that we are in a fragile situation when you take into account our building is 50-60 years old. Plus, these faithful parishioners are 75 to 80+ years old. What's going to happen? Please pray that everyone reflects on what it means for them to be a follower of Christ. What does it mean to be a parishioner. The buildings and parishes might close but hopefully God's work will continue. Peace, Father Mike Meany POLISH CHILDREN'S CHOIR and ENGLISH CHILDREN'S CHOIR We are organizing a NEW SJB CHILDREN S CHOIR to sing in Polish for the St. John Brebeuf celebration of First Holy Communion (in Polish) on Saturday, May 7 th at 2:00 p.m. We need all children who can speak Polish and love to sing to come out and create this new fun group! Especially invited are the siblings of those who will receive our Lord at this liturgy. Four rehearsals will prepare us to celebrate with the First Communicants. Children will have the opportunity to learn about basic singing, and we will learn music for the mass and hymns. Children age 9-17 are invited. SJB POLISH Children s Choir SCHEDULE TIME: 6:15-7:30 p.m. DATES: Fridays - April 15, 22, 29, May 6; First Communion - Saturday, May 7 at 2:00 p.m. LOCATION: Music Rehearsal Room in SJB Church (east door) A $15 fee will cover new binders and music. Questions? Call (in Polish or English) Mrs. Ewa Fair, SJB Children's Choir Director (773) 551-0284. The established SJB Children s Choir (who sing in English at every Thursday 8:30 a.m. School Mass and monthly Sunday Family Mass) will continue to rehearse and prepare for the earlier 10:00 a.m. First Communion (in English) on Saturday, May 7 th during their regular rehearsal schedule: SJB ENGLISH Children s Choir SCHEDULE DAYS: Tuesdays TIME: 2:00-3:15 p.m. LOCATION: SJB School DAYS: Thursdays TIME: 5:30-6:30 p.m. LOCATION: SJB School First Communion Saturday, May 7 at 10:00 a.m. Questions? Call (in Polish or English) Mrs. Ewa Fair, SJB Children's Choir Director (773) 551-0284.

April 24, 2016 Page 3 The Ministry of Sacristan Consider becoming a Sacristan at St. John Brebeuf. This ministry is crucial to the daily functioning of the church, and today we have a special need for sacristans for the funeral masses held on weekdays and Saturdays. You might consider working in pairs with another sacristan to make the time more fun. What does the Sacristan do? Many things need to be done before liturgy can take place. Bread and wine must be in place, vessels and vestments available, books set out and candles lit, guiding the younger altar servers into place, occasionally reading from Scripture. The ordained ministers often do some of this work, but sometimes they need an extra hand. Don t worry - you won t need to take care of everything: the lectors, altar servers, ushers and Eucharistic ministers have responsibilities for making ready the materials that they themselves use. We invite you to consider this ministry of holy duties, serving the liturgy and serving the entire community. Call the office and ask for Barbara or leave your phone number. Altar Bread and Wine will be Offered in Memory of Nicholas Vasile, Sr. on his Third Anniversary of Death Donated by the Vasile Brown Family during the week of April 24, 2016 We Welcome The Children Baptized in March Francesco, son of Tadeusz and Katarzyna (Marat) Gasior Alexia Jasmine, daughter of Allen and Anne (Fernando) Harris READINGS FOR MAY 1 First Reading The question of whether circumcision is necessary for salvation (Acts 15:1-2, 22-29). Psalm O God, let all the nations praise you! (Psalm 67). Second Reading John envisions the holy city, the new Jerusalem (Revelation 21:10-14, 22-23) or Revelation 22:12-14, 16-17, 20. Gospel The Holy Spirit, sent by the Father in Jesus name, will teach us everything (John 14:23-29) or John 17:20-26. ATTENTION ALL EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS & MINISTERS OF CARE Our spring formation meeting will be held on Monday, May 2 nd 2016 in the Ministry Center at 7pm. We will be hosting Fr. Richard Fragomeni who will provide us with an interactive and dynamic presentation on the Holy Eucharist; light refreshments will be provided. The evening will close with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament in the church around 8:30pm. It is an expectation that all ministers attend at least (1) formation meeting per calendar year (either spring or fall) in order to continue in ministry. Please plan accordingly. Any questions or concerns, please contact Deacon Mariusz Kosla- Coordinator of Eucharistic Ministry through the parish office or via email at mwkosla@comcast.net

Praying the rosary together in front of the Blessed Sacrament gives many graces and is so peaceful. PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Christ's followers were skeptical when He preached the reality of His Body and Blood as food and drink. St. John said, "many of His disciples withdrew and no longer went about with Him." Seeing this, Jesus asked the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave me?" Simon Peter did not understand any more than those who left Christ, but his loyalty was more firm. "Lord," he said, "to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." We have the "Word of Eternal Life" right here with us day and night in our Adoration Chapel. Do you have something you want to ask Him? There are several hours needing adorers. Please pick one for your personal hour with Him. April 24, 2016 Page 5 A special invitation won t you please say "yes"? All baptized are called to the service of Christ in the community of the Church. We share in the priesthood of Christ and, after the ordained, we are called to service in duties of our own. The current needs are for ministers to serve in these roles: Lectors, who proclaim the scripture in the first and second readings at Mass. Extraordinary ministers, who distribute the Body and Blood of Christ at Communion. Welcomers, also known as ushers and greeters, who greet and help assemble the congregation and take up the collection. Please! We need your help! You can enhance your spiritual life and our Eucharistic liturgies with as little as one hour commitment of your time a month. You can choose the Mass at which you wish to serve. Mamy wielką szkołę, piękne budynki i dużą frekwencję podczas naszych liturgii i innych wydarzeń. Nasza parafia jest bardzo aktywna i dynamiczna! Niestety my również mamy swoje problemy. Rozejrzyj się, średni wiek osób uczestniczących w Mszach Świętych wynosi 65 lub więcej lat. Średni wiek osób zaangażowanych w posługę, czy to Wujka Pete, GLADD, porządkowych, lektorów itp. To 70+ lat.
