Pg. 13 Salute to State Track...Pg. 14 Memorial Ride to Remember Harkin s In the Footsteps of History Tour Visits Keokuk County, June 13 Harkin Aide to Visit Keokuk County as Part of In the Footsteps of History Tour Will see renovations made possible by Harkin Main Street Grant impact of federal funding on the community Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) announced his aide, Tamara Milton, is visiting Keokuk County on Friday, June 13, as part of a summer tour highlighting Harkin s partnership with Iowa communities through the years. Community members are encouraged to attend at 1 p.m. at the Sigourney City Hall, 100 N. Main St., Sigourney. A beautiful framed photo of the original memorial hangs in the Keota V.F.W. When people see this photo for the first time they instinctively ask where it is located. When informed that it use to stand on Main Street, but was torn down, they first ask why and then inquire about rebuilding the Memorial. A few years ago, a new memorial similar to the World News-Review Deadlines Are Always Friday @ 5 p.m. through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is helping the community. Since Fiscal Year 2002, more than $1 million has come to the area in grants that has provided firefighting equipment, training and vehicle acquisition. In 2009, the City of Sigourney was awarded a $69,475 U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) s Community Oriented Policing Services Secure our Schools Grant to increase school security in the district. Additionally, officials will see Main Street renovations made possible by federal funding. In 2002, the City of Sigourney was awarded a $40,000 Harkin Main Street Grant to rehabilitate two properties into affordable housing apartments and a restaurant. The new memorial will have the individual names of all area men and women who have served; members of the Keota Grand Army of The Republic, The Keota American Legion, the Keota Veterans of Foreign Wars, were listed on one or more of the Keota Honor Rolls, attended school in the Keota area or buried in one of the area cemeteries. To date over 1300 names have been compiled. A site for the new memorial has been tentatively selected on Main Street, but final transaction is still in the process. The total cost of the memorial is approximately $125,000. So far, $32,000 has been raised, which is about 25 percent of the total projected cost. Two big fundraisers are coming up the first is a Benefit Auction on Saturday, June 14, following the Keota Fun Days Grand Parade and the second is a Keota Unlimited s Labor Day Weekend Raffle. Submitted upon request, written by Rabbi of What Cheer The Vietnam Veterans memorial was finished and dedicated in 1984. I was living in Des Moines at the time so it became an almost daily routine to stop and commune with the Iowa veterans who fell during the Vietnam War. In 1989 I traveled to Washington D.C. to perform a song I had written titled My Brothers Missing at the Lincoln Memorial on Memorial Day week end. During that time the national Rolling Thunder motorcycle tribute to Vietnam veterans was taking place. On returning to Iowa, plans were conceived and put in place to have a state Vietnam veterans memorial motorcycle parade. At the time, Vietnam veterans were still not being treated with the respect they deserved so we took it upon ourselves to honor those who had served in Southeast Asia. Several years into the event, due to the support of the public, mostly the biker community we dropped the Vietnam veterans motorcycle parade and just became Iowa Thunder a motorcycle tribute to all veterans. The interim let us discard the stigma of social outcast that we had suffered since the war ended. In the new mission to honor all veterans, our mission statement became to insure the families of all veterans, that the service and sacrifice of their sons and daughters would not be forgotten by those who understand the price of the freedoms we enjoy. One of the core elements of the honor ceremony at the memorial garden in Des Moines has become the Spirit Bell For each casualty of our current conflict for the preceding 12 month period, the bell is rang as the fallen names are called out. The first ride was just that, a ride, about 650 loosely organized motorcycles, a poorly planned route and no thought to a ceremony or speaker at the memorial. Routes were rethought and the current Southridge Mall staging area came about in year four. We have tried adding some prestige with the presence of various Color Guards, Rifle squads Relay Returns to Sigourney Square The 2014 Keokuk County Relay for Life is returning to the Sigourney square on Saturday, June 7. A new planning committee has released the following schedule for the 2014 event: 6 p.m.: Boy Scouts to present the flags 6-6:30: Opening/Survivor Ceremony 6:30-7: Studio E dancing 7-7:30: Tae Kwon Do performance 7:30-8:30: Band Breaking Adam to perform 8:45: Civil Servant Lap 9 p.m.: Lighting of Luminary (names will be read by Keokuk County Sheriff Casey Hinnah and Sigourney Mayor Terry Hollingsworth) and buglers. but our success seems to lie in the lack of fanfare. Somewhere along the way we picked up a public address system, then came the cordless mike which allows me to move through the crowd during the spirit bell ceremony. The two most significant changes would be the faces of the riders, there are a lot of gray beards. While we have gotten older in the event, so have the riders who return each year. Not so surprisingly there is a strong mix of veteran and non veteran riders. Each year seems to draw a number of younger riders. I think the connection to the families of those we honor is key to that but also there are some younger folk searching for answers and wanting to be a part of support for our warriors. Our intent is keep focus on the families for those who have fallen and staying abreast of current involvements in conflicts. Our core, is emotion. In the beginning, we were besieged with comments of, let it die, Vietnam is history, stuff like this just reminds the families of their loss. The new generation of Gold Star families are having none of that. They are not going to put memories in a box, on a shelf in the closet. They want their children remembered. One comment I hear from our current warriors is, we feel bad being treated the way we are, the honor and respect, the homecoming crowds and flag lines at the airports, its not fair to the Vietnam vets after the way you were treated. Nothing will change the way we were treated. What has changed is the way the world views those who answer the call to service. Panthers Stand Tall Together at Iowa Tri-County Alumni Banquet State Track & Field Championships By Adam Meier, Regional Sports Editor 5/22 5/24 Iowa State Track & Field Championships What motivates Pekin s track and field athletes? Listening to their comments following whatever event just got over with makes the answer obvious. We all pump each other up, senior Jess Horras. We push each other really hard, sophomore Christian Wittrock. We blend really well together and that s all that matters, senior Brody Long. It s clear that one of, if not the key motivating factor surrounding Pekin track & field is the drive of each athlete to perform the best for one another. That drive, which comes from the simple fact that most of the Panthers have such close friendships with one another, helped propel the Pekin boys and girls track & field teams to impressive showings at the State Track & Field Championships in Des Moines. Pekin s girls squad accumulated a total of 40 points as a team to finish fourth, while the boys squad tallied 11 points to tie for 12th. In one of the very first events of the meet, sophomores and best friends Gwynne Wright and Taylor Lock started side-byside in the 3,000 and they both finished nicely. I knew we had a chance to do something great, Wright said about the 3,000. Taylor s really talented. We were hoping to come away with some points. I m really happy for both of us. Wright placed second behind Griswold s Rebekah Topham (9:57) with a time of 10:36, while Lock ran a time of 11:29 to place 19th. She s my best friend and she pushes me every single practice, Lock said about Wright. Whenever we get on the track I try to stay with her for a couple laps and keep her in my sights, which is really hard to do. If not for Griswold s Topham, Wright might have very well came home holding three gold medals, but instead, Wright had to settle for three silvers. Wright finished second to Topham, a junior, in both the 1,500 (4:58) and the 800 (2:19). Still, it was an incredible threeday stretch for Wright, which was highlighted by getting the handoff from her older sister, Samantha, for the anchor leg of the distance medley. Despite a shaky handoff that resulted in the Wrights tripping, the Panthers still placed 5th (4:21); Kaylee Linder and Sloan Reighard ran the first two legs. The Copeland brothers and Wittrock, who ran the 400-leg in Pekin s medley relay, also ran in Pekin s 4x100 (19th, 45.72) and 4x200 (6th, 1:32.82) relays at State, along with senior Brody Long. Just like the Wright sisters did in the distance medley, the Copeland brothers were blessed with the opportunity to run together in the same event on the blue oval in Drake Stadium. How did that feel? you might ask. Well, in the words of both Chase (a sophomore) and Tyler (a freshman), It s pretty awesome. Tyler ran the opening legs in two of the three relays he was in at State and he says his goal each time is simple: My goal every time I start is to hand off the baton first. Chase, who ran the anchor leg in two of his three relays at State, has a different mindset than his younger brother, specifically in the 4x200 alongside a certain team from the South Iowa Cedar League. What s going through my head is that I don t want to have to worry about anyone but Lynnville-Sully; that ended up working out that way, Copeland said about getting the baton in the 4x200. I gotta go, is what I was thinking the whole time. The Panthers got second in their heat and sixth overall, while Lynnville-Sully placed second in the 4x200 and won the 4x100. Copeland also ran in the 100-meter dash and placed tenth in a time of 10.52 seconds. Pekin s 4x100 and 4x200 relays almost looked a lot differently this season, as senior Brody Long was convinced by his now teammates to join the team. I didn t go out my junior year, but these guys talked me into going out my senior year and I m glad I did, said Long after running the 4x200. It feels great; I wouldn t want my last year to go any other way. Another of Pekin s seniors, Cade Millikin, ran the anchor leg of the 4x800. The group of Ryan Millikin, Austin Fariss, Cole Reighard and Cade Millikin, combined to run a time of 8:40 to finish 13th. Ryan Millikin, the lone freshman qualifier in the 1,600 in Class 1A, clocked in with a time of 4:52 to place 19th. Continuing on the trend of seniors competing for the last time in their Pekin uniforms, Samantha Wright, Jess Horras and throwers Eric Adam & Jared Bond all put stamps on their careers in Des Moines. Wright placed 24th (1:14) in the 400-meter hurdles and helped Pekin s 4x400 of Whitney Horras, Tayler Winn and Taylor Reynolds, place 23rd in a time of 4:23. I ve had some injuries, with a concussion and some other things, Horras said. But I put in a lot of hard work. We worked together a lot as a team. Horras, along with Mallory Reed, Nikole Arendt and Kaylee Linder, combined to run a time of 52.69 seconds in the 4x100 to place sixth overall. In the sprint medley Horras, Reed, Linder and Taylor Reynolds, placed 14th with a time of 1:56. Reed also placed ninth in the 100-meter hurdles (16.20 seconds), while Reynolds, along with Sloan Reighard, Whitney Horras and Shea Dahlstrom, finished 19th in the 4x800 in a time of 10:27. Eric Adam scored points for the Panthers in the shot put, while Jared Bond did the same for Pekin in the discus. Adam placed sixth in the shot put with a distance of 49 3, while Bond placed 13th (46 10.5 ). In the discus Bond came in seventh place with a toss of 147 7, and Adam finished 20th with a throw of 127 1. Junior Bridget Fritchen nearly matched her personal best in the discus to finish eighth with a throw of 109 3, while Shelbie Williams threw 97 6 and placed 21st. Williams, a sophomore, had a much stronger outing in the shot put, however, and her only motivating factor was herself. I wanted to at least get about 30 feet and not choke like I did last year, Williams said about her mindset going in. I thought I threw pretty good, especially coming in with my arm the way it is. Williams ailing forearm muscles didn t stop her from throwing 38 8.50 and finishing in second place. When asked what her goal is for next year, Williams answer was simple and straightforward: Being the champion is my goal. I want to throw 40 feet. Pekin also took two boy and two girl high jumpers to Des Moines. After pushing each other to their peaks all spring, Coltan Lanman and Zach Conger, along with Beth Atwood and Kaysha Dodson, counted their steps and placed their pieces of tape for the last time this season. Lanman, a junior, had the best performance of any Panther in the high jump, finishing sixth with an impressive mark of 6 2. Meanwhile, Conger, who is just a freshman, cleared 6 0 and finished 14th. Atwood and Dodson, who are both sophomores, finished 18th and 19th, respectively, with Atwood clearing 4 10 and Dodson clearing 4 8. The friendly competition of the Pekin high jumpers epitomizes the nature of what goes on within the Pekin track & field program and it s what has contributed to its success. These athletes want to not only do the best they can, they want to see the person next to them do as best as they can. That mutual energy is, in large part, what feeds the program, and it s what fueled the Panthers to such great success this past spring. Kaylee Linder, a freshman no less, already has the right idea: Our team is like a family, she said. And she s right, Pekin track and field is like a family. Tri-County Alumni met on Saturday, May 24, at the TriCounty gymnasium for their annual meeting and banquet. Special honored guests included John McCurdy of Des Moines, who graduated from Gibson High School in 1934 and Neva Fisher Ewald of Sigourney, who graduated from What Cheer High School in 1938. Tri-County Alumni elected officers at their annual meeting on May 24. Wednesday, June April 4, 23, 2014 2014 53 In Search of Our Ancient Americans At English Valleys History Center The English Valleys History Center is presenting a program entitled In Search of Our Ancient Americans on Sunday, June 22, at 2:00 p.m. at the History Center. Bill Anderson of Richland, will discuss what life was like in the past in Keokuk County along the Skunk River based upon the clues from that archaeologists have found. He will also share some of the history of Chiefs Keokuk and Wapello. Bill Anderson has had a long time interest in archaeology, Native Americans and the history of Iowa. He is a native of Blakesburg in Wapello County and has spent a lifetime as an educator. He retired from Pekin Community Schools in 1994 after 32 years as a classroom teacher, coach, and administrator. He spent the last several years before retirement teaching middle school social Auxiliary Places Flags On Graves at Sorden The Auxiliary of Keswick American Legion James Murphy Post No. 319 met at the Sorden Cemetery on Thursday, May 22 at 4:15 p.m. along with the Sorden Cemetery Association for the purpose of placing flags and wreaths on the grave sites of the veterans and 12 members were in attendance. The avenue flags were in place and the weather was ideal. After placing 142 flags and wreaths on veteran s grave sites the group gathered at the Legion Hall for refreshments served by Karen Sharper. The annual Memorial Day program was held at the Sorden cemetery Monday May 26 at 2 p.m. The winners for the poppy posters are as follows: 2nd Grade First Place - December Davis Second Place - Logan Toloza 3rd Grade First Place - Delanie Little Second Place - Macy Schmidt The next meeting Thursday, June 26. Carla Burdock is presenting the program and Sandra Hudson is Hostess. studies, with a strong emphasis on archaeology and Native Americans. He founded the Southeast Iowa Archaeology Chapter of the Iowa Archaeological Society several years ago and has served in the past as President of the Iowa Archaeological Society. He is a long-standing member of the I.A.S. and has worked with the Office of the State Archaeologist. He has been married to his wife, Pauline, for 55 years, and they are parents of two children and six grandchildren. Bill and Pauline are long-time residents of Richland where they are involved in community and church activities. The EV History Center is located at 108 N. Main Street in North English, and all are invited to attend this event at no charge. Donations are accepted. Stick-To-It Meets, Makes Donations In their April meeting, the Stick-To-It 4-H club made donations to the following causes and projects to show gratitude and appreciation for our community. $100 was set aside to buy new equipment for the 4-H dog obedience at the fairgrounds. $150 was pledged to the Lord s Pantry, to help the struggling members of Sigourney and those in surrounding areas. $200 was pledged to the Sigourney Park, to help liven up the community around the area and promote communication. $50 was pledged to the local chapter of Mary s Meals, which provides meals to starving children in Africa. This was to help better the lives of those less fortunate in this world and help better the world view and be loyal to our fellow human beings. Iowa Newspaper Foundation Award Eleven Scholarships Eleven Iowa students were selected as recipients of Iowa Newspaper Foundation scholarships for the 2014-2015 academic year. The scholarships are awarded to students preparing for a career in the newspaper industry. This year s awards and recipients include: Le Mars Daily Sentinel Scholarship, $500: Jamie Byrnes graduated from Harlan Community High School and attends Morningside College. Carter Pitts Scholarship Endowment Award, $500: Andrew Buenger graduated from Clay Central/Everly High School and attends Central College Iowa Journalism Institute Scholarship, $1,000 total: Two awards for 2014-2015. A graduate from Coon Rapids-Bayard High School, Dora Grote attends the University of Iowa and receives a $500 award. Madeline Topf is graduating from Ames High School and attending Carleton College in Minnesota. She also is receiving a $500 award. David W. Belin Scholarship, $1,000: Following graduation from Maquoketa Valley Senior High School, Jenna Reeves is attending Iowa State University. Iowa Newspaper Foundation Scholarships: $2,000 total: Four awards for 2014-2015. Lauren Coffey, a graduate from Johnston Senior High School attends the University of Iowa and is receiving $500. A high school graduate from Oxford Academy in California, Steffi Lee attends Simpson College and is receiving $500. Following graduation from Lincoln High School, another $500 recipient, Amy Luong, is attending the University of Iowa. Also receiving the $500 award is Mikaela Parrick who is graduating from Central Lyon High School and attend the University of Iowa. Fred W. Woodward Scholarship, $500: Riley Cole, a student at West Delaware High School, is graduating and attending Wartburg College. Iowa College Media Association Scholarship, $500: Laura Goettsch graduated from Green Mountain-Garwin High School and attends Grand View University. The Iowa Newspaper Foundation received 75 applications for the 11 scholarships. These annual scholarships are one way the INF contributes to the education of young Iowans anticipating newspaper careers. The Iowa Newspaper Foundation is grateful to the Woodward Foundation for their support of the Fred W. Woodward Scholarship. The scholarship honors the late Fred W. Woodward, longtime publisher of the Dubuque Telegraph Herald. The David W. Belin Scholarship is awarded to a student attending or planning to attend the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication at Iowa State University and is in conjunction with the Iowa Journalism Institute awards which are funded through a gift to the Iowa Newspaper Foundation by Gary Gerlach and Michael Gartner. The late David W. Belin was a nationally-recognized lawyer and longtime business partner of Gerlach and Gartner. Two scholarships are given in memory of the late Carter Pitts, longtime publisher of the Le Mars Daily Sentinel and the first president of the Iowa Newspaper Foundation. The Carter Pitts and Le Mars Daily Sentinel scholarships are funded by an annual gift from the Daily Sentinel. The Carter Pitts Scholarship Endowment award was set up through a gift established by members of the Pitts family. The Iowa Newspaper Foundation scholarships are provided through contributions from Iowa newspapers and the Pages for the 21st Century program. The Iowa College Media Association (ICMA) is offered to a student attending a college or university with a membership in ICMA. The INF is offering scholarships for students again next year. An online application is available to all public and private high schools in Iowa as well as college and university journalism and mass communication departments. Opera House Band at WC Opera House The What Cheer Opera House Band s second performance of the 2014 season is Saturday, June 21 at 7:30 p.m. June members appearing in this show are Margie and Harvey Calvin, Oskaloosa; Doris Hicks, Rose Hill; Ross Knipfer, North English; and Julie Montgomery, Cedar. Special guests this month are Stan Knipfer, Keosauqua, who was the lead guitarist for many years and Bill Morris, Ottumwa, who has been a member in past years. Bring your friends and admission is a free will offering. Keokuk County Food Pantry Donations The Keokuk County Food Pantry received many donations during the April and May months. SIEDA PAT Earns Credential Sieda Community Action s Parents as Teachers (PAT) program recently earned the Iowa Family Support Credential. The Iowa Family Support Credential is awarded to family support and parent education programs that, through a rigorous external evaluation, are determined to be in substantial adherence to the Iowa Family Support Standards. The Sieda PAT is the forty-third Iowa program to earn this honored distinction. We are proud and delighted to receive the Iowa Family Support Credential, said Becky Falck, Director of Family Support Services for Sieda Community Action. This distinction is clear evidence of the hard work and dedication of the Parents as Teachers staff. The Iowa Family Support Standards are based on the most up to date, evidence based practices in the family support field. Adherence to the standards indicates the program is providing high-quality services resulting in positive outcomes for young children and their families. The Sieda PAT program was required to meet the 139 standards to receive the Iowa Family Support Credential. The Iowa Family Support Credential is valid for five years. Parents as teachers is an in-home visitation program for parents with children ages birth to age 5. The PAT program provides parents with child developmental knowledge and parenting support, provide early detection of developmental delays and health issues, prevent child abuse and neglect, and increase children s school readiness. The PAT model includes one-on-one home visits, monthly group meetings, developmental screenings, and a resource network for families. Sieda Community Action, a private organization established in 1965 as a community action agency, implements a range of services designed to strengthen families, promote child development and help individuals and families with basic needs. Through our programs, individuals in Appanoose, Davis, Jefferson, Keokuk, Mahaska, Van Buren, and Wapello counties are better prepared to meet their basic needs. With this strong foundation, individuals and families are more likely to become self-reliant and contribute positively to their families and communities. The Streigle s granddaughter, Emily Conrad of Ottumwa, graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Emily is starting her career in a veterinary clinic in Illinois. She began with an introduction of her personal family history of service to our country. The opening poem, To Our Wives and Sweethearts was written by Harold Calvert and 1942. Scripture was based on readings from Luke 13 and 19. The Mother s Day holiday was declared by our president in 1914. Robert was born on February 11, 1948, in Charles City, the son of Leslie and Musetta (Ally) Epperly. He graduated from Thornburg High School. Bob served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He was united in marriage to Sharon Knowler on May 15, 1971 in Oskaloosa. Bob worked as a construction lineman, retiring from Windstream Communications in 2010. His hobbies included fishing, riding his Harley Davison motorcycle, and collecting toy cars. He also enjoyed being outdoors and working in his garage. Survivors include his wife, Sharon of Marion; two sons, Chris Epperly of Tama and B.J. (Cindy) Epperly of Tama; six grandchildren, Kinzee, Kelsey, Kolby, Karlee, Kadence, and Koya; a great-granddaughter, Keyleigh; one brother, Dean (Lucy) Epperly of Williamsburg and a brother-in-law, James Stout of Sigourney. Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Martha Stout; and a brother-in-law, Steve Barron. A memorial fund has been established. ~ Utterback ~ moved back to Sigourney and started his own painting business. He retired from painting in 2013. Loren was a member of the Delta Christian Church and enjoyed golfing, playing horseshoes and singing with the Utterback Quartet. His orneriness and joking will surely be missed. She had a special fondness for horses, loved Christmas, and Iowa Hawkeyes Basketball. She was known as Ma to many of Steve and Randy s friends, and was always willing to participate in any of the kid s activities, especially their Sunday night softball and basketball pickup games. 6 Wednesday, June 4, 2014 SHS Spring 2014 The Sigourney High School Band thrilled the audience with their performance during the 2014 Spring Concert on May 8. The Band is under the leadership of Director Jessica Meier [photos by Robin Handy]. The Trombone Section: Jake Van Ee, Tanner Bos, Noah Schuster, Tyler Crawford and Drayce Wester performed Lassus Trombone, Henry Fillmore/arr. Loras Schissel. This gave the guys an opportunity to show off a bit with their mad skills very impressive. Karah Appleget keeps time in the Percussion Section (above). Another cross section of the Band provides a view of the Flutes, Horns, Trombones, Trumpets, Bells and Clarinets. Wednesday, June 4, 2014 7 Band and Vocal Concert The Sigourney High School Choir shared their talents with the audience at the 2014 Spring Concert on May 8. The choir is under the leadership of Director Randy Stichter and was accompanied by Susan K. Johnson. The senior members of the SCSD Music Department are pictured above-right (left to right): Noah Schuster, Sydney Davis, Ashley Berg, Emily Danowsky, Skyler Hazelette, Gretchen Witzenburg and Karah Appleget. Each year the Department presents the student with the best overall muscial development and the 2014 recipient was Gretchen Witzenburg (above with Jessica Meier). Several students performed solos or a trio and they were: Hannah Redlinger, Gretchen Witzenburg and Ashley Shadley; they performed a couple pieces the trio was using in competition as well. Bethany Bailey shared her piece she used for contest. Cassidy Leer performed her contest solo piece and Kacey Cranston shared her contest piece as well.

8 Wednesday, June 4, 2014 Where did spring go? It seems that we have jumped headlong into summer. The heat and humidity are not to this old guy s liking, but I guess that we will have to deal with it. I can say that the hot, humid afternoons have led to some beautiful evenings with cool breezes around area ball diamonds. I did get in a lot of baseball this past week. I have yet to cover a softball game, but I had four nights of baseball last week. It all started on Tuesday night when I covered the Pella Christian-Twin Cedars game at PC. The Sabers came into the game as the top ranked team in Class 1-A, but the Eagles took the battle to them. The Game was tied 1-1 until the fifth inning when TC was able to put a four spot on the board. The Sabers took the win 5-3 with Coy Moore turning in a fine pitching effort. Wednesday night it was off to Ottumwa for the twin grandson s games. Alec played second base with the sophomores on the Legion diamond against Ankeny while Chris played shortstop with the freshman team on the Babe Ruth field against Ankeny. The Ancient-ess and I found a perch on the top row of the Legion field bleachers and from that vantage point we could see both diamonds. Alec s sophomore team won 10-0 and 3-2. The freshman team won big in the first game, but I couldn t see the scoreboard. Chris played only the first game as he is only a week off of have a cast removed from his ankle. Thursday, I journeyed to Pleasantville for the Knoxville papers. The Trojans were hosting North Mahaska so I was able to see lots of old friends. I was able to share the press box with former student and good friend, Phil Ray. Phil was on the mike and it was hard to keep him from breaking into an auctioneer chant. That is why we always called him Colonel Phil. His greatest ambition was to be an auctioneer and an umpire and he has done both. The Warhawks found it tough going against Pleasantville sophomore left hander, Zeb Adreon. Zeb is of the Adreon clan of Eddyville that has starred in athletics since the 50 s. He is a fireball pitcher and only Trent Roose was able to solve his slants. Roose clubbed a massive home run and a double to lead the Warhawks in a 13-3 loss. Friday night it was grandson time again. This time Logan s Oskaloosa Indians traveled to Eddyville for a tiff with the Rockets. It was an exciting game the Indians showed a lot of hustle and enthusiasm. They rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-3 win. On Thursday night, Osky did the same thing at Martensdale-St. Mary s as they rallied for two in the seventh to tie the game and won it 6-5 with a run in the eighth inning. I was looking forward to rest and relaxation on Saturday and maybe even a little golf. That idea went poof like a soap bubble in the breeze when the Ancient-ess informed me that we had an 85th birthday open house to attend and that Lil Bea had a dance recital at Bridgeview in Ottumwa. Oh boy! I guess I was in need of a shot of culture. Goodbye golf! Ponderings of the Heart By Jane Green Larson Tales of the Ancient Sportsman by Burdell Hensley I must admit that the recital was neat and well done. I would say that at least 150 kids participated and they were quite talented. But in this grandpa s eyes, Lil Bea in her Minnie Mouse costume was the star of the show. The real plus to the day was that it was about suppertime when all the social activity subsided and the Ancient-ess had made her stop at Earl Mays. I decided to stop in Chillicothe to check out the Barnyard Restaurant. The Deevers family has opened a family restaurant in the old Cooper s Corner building and I must say that the food is excellent. I was sure I could get to the golf course Sunday afternoon, but alas, I was foiled again. Emily had a soccer game, so we did that. They played well and beat a team from Gilbert 4-2. In the evening we went down to Union Liberty Church near Bussey for a concert by the Rozenboom Trio. The concert was great and the fellowship was excellent. Several of the folks down there were former students of mine at Twin Cedars from 1962 to 1966. It is amazing to notice that they are all as old as I am now. It is time again to look back at our yesterdays. 100 years ago: June 6, 1914 - Penn College won its final game of the season by beating Central 5-1. Harbinson twirled a threehitter and he ripped a triple for Penn. Downs added a single and a double and Eveland cracked a double. 75 years ago: June 12, 1939 - The Barnes City Tigers slipped past the Gibson Indees 4-3. R. Lester pitched the win as he out dueled Carmen Wymore in the 10-inning battle. 50 years ago: June 6. 1964 - Jim Powell fired a one-hitter, but took a tough 2-0 loss to Highland. Powell and Roger Rowland each singled twice to lead Eddyville. June 10 - Jerry Schleier fanned 18 and allowed one hit as the Eddies clubbed previously unbeaten Cardinal 11-0 in Blackhawk Conference play. Gordon Watkins lashed three singles and Jim Powell added a single and a double to lead the Rockets. 25 years ago: June 6, 1989 - Eric Stein scattered six hits as Tri-County bombed Blakesburg 13-2 in Empire Conference play. June 6 - No. 8 ranked Pella Christian split with Mt. Pleasant. In a 14-4 first game win the Eagles clubbed four home runs. Jeff Zylstra blasted a home run, double and a single while Kyle Wynja, Charlie Sinclair and Chris Fynaardt each hammered a long ball. June 7 - Eddyville drubbed Lynnville-Sully 16-1 to remain unbeaten in softball. Chris Edgren pitched the win while Joellen Harding ripped a triple and a single. June 10 - Oskaloosa s Rick Hensley tossed a threehitter as the Indians pounded Albia 9-1. Dennis Walker and Bill Almond had home runs for Osky. June 12 - Pella Christian won the Eddyville Softball tourney with a 5-3 win over Ottumwa. Emily Grimes pitched the win and poked a double and a single. Angie Menninga also had a pair of hits for PC. Have a great week and keep an eye on the skies. It is that season again. Reminiscing By Hilda Souer Eddie Evans was back visiting his mother, Lois, and went to church on Sunday. They had the veterans stand and honored them. Eddie and Kenny were the only ones there. It was a very nice service for the veterans. Ellen and Jean played a special song for them. Delores Schmidt s granddaughter was at church and said Delores was home again, and had to go back to Iowa City to the hospital again. She has had quite a time. Michelle s son, Craig, came with her and said he wouldn t be back for a while as he was going to his home. I missed him helping before her sermon. Pastor Michelle goes to Barnes City, Millersburg and North English to preach, so it keeps her on the go on Sundays. Saturday, Kenny and I went to Grinnell and shopped. We went to a super yard sale that had everything, even cookbooks. Ha! Just got a few. We ate at Pizza Ranch. Kenny s daughter, Marveta, and granddaughter, Melissa, came Sunday to decorate Kenny s daughter Linda s grave in Malcolm. Dolly enjoyed Marveta entertaining her. She enjoys company. We had lunch before they left. Melissa has to eat gluten free food and Marveta is a vegetarian. We had some radishes from Bobby s garden. They are really good. Tuesday, Ellen Zimmerman and I went to North English Nursing Home for music. George Warner wasn t feeling well, so she didn t have us pick her up to go. The residents like to see her too and visit with her. Ellen and I had lunch at the malt shop. After church Sunday, Ellen said they got a get well card for Barb Zimmerman and Eddie Evans signed it sorry for your Deep River News By Janet Rauch roofing problem, as Barb has shingles they got a bang out of this. Eddie is a character. We had a fun day at Donn as this week. Four of her great grandkids were there. All about the same age. They had a big time. Aunt Judy was in charge. Kenny and I shopped at Grinnell Friday. We ate at KFC, I got some music at Second Mile and a few other things. Adam s little girl can t say the dog s name at Shelby s, so she calls Jack, Woof Woof. We all got a bang out of that. They are still working on the sidewalks uptown. Bobby brought us some more radishes out of his garden. They are real good and crisp. Robbie Yeager was at church with two black eyes she got from hitting her head on the car door when she looked up. She had a bump on her forehead too. Ellen Zimmerman and Jeanie Fisher went to Kansas City to a wedding Sunday, so Sally Mc- Clain Johnson played for church in their place. CINNAMON APPLE SALAD 2 (3 oz.) pkgs. lemon Jello 1/2 c. red hot cinnamon candies 3 c. boiling water 2 c. unsweeted applesauce 1 T. lemon juice Dash of salt 1/2 c. broken walnuts 2 (3 oz.) pkgs. cream cheese 1/4 c. milk 2 T. salad dressing Dissolve gelatin and candies in boiling water. Stir in mashed applesauce, lemon juice and salt. Chill until partially set. Add nuts. Place in 8x8x2 pan. Blend softened cream cheese, milk and salad dressing; spoon on top. Swirl through salad in marble. Chill until firm. Cut in squares to serve. What a weekend! It started last Friday when the Class of 1959, Tri-County South, met together at the Pizza Ranch in Sigourney. We had prearranged the date and we enjoyed one another in the meeting room. We are truly blessed as we view one another not only as classmates, we agree we are all like extended family. One by one we greeted one another and spent the rest of the time working on a Trivia Game that included incidents of time gone by! We all went to school and graduated from What Cheer in 1959 and it was when all the stores up and down the street in What Cheer was filled with activity. The pottery was still in full force and employed most of the men in town. We worked on the trivia game in groups. Two winners were awarded a What Cheer coffee cup for answering the most questions. The remainder of time. Individuals table hopped and made sure they learned up-to-date news of each other s family. Then, Saturday morning, the 59 ers met at the What Cheer Bandstand and simply looked over the town. We gave each other reminders of happenings of our town. We reminded each other where the dime store used to be, the Tic Toc Theater, the Hemsley Garage, the two Thomas Grocery Stores, the Silk Grocery Store, Nilles Clothing Store, the three taverns, Atwood Shoe Store, on and on the group remembered. Then, we left as a group to visit and place a wreath on the grave of Dennis Harrison. He was our classmate that passed away between our Junior and Senior years of High School. We each shared our memory of a young man who was like a brother to us all...this was before schools offered grief counselors. We simply shared our grief one with another and helped each other through this trying time in our young lives. The morning was not over yet, we then proceeded as a group to the gravesite of another student who recently passed away, John Wagner. We placed flowers on his grave and shared memories of John with one another. We all proceeded back to Sigourney where we met for a light lunch at K s on the Square. More classmates joined us for this luncheon, so we con- tinued sharing our memories of 55 and more years ago. We all admitted the time has gone rapidly by. Our evening would end with one more gathering, the 47th Annual Banquet Meeting at the Tri-County gymnasium. It is hard to believe it was 47 years ago that students from Gibson, Thornburg, Keswick and What Cheer joined together and the Tri-County School System was organized. What Cheer used to have colors of red and white and were called the Warriors, but after joining together into the Tri-County Schools, we changed to black and gold and the new body of students would be called Trojans. This was a big change for these four schools. However, as I look around at the happenings of this night, it certainly has been successful. I was especially impressed this night as the 25 year class presented a plaque in memory of Deputy Eric Stein. Oh, and I must tell you two subscribers to the News Review sought me out to tell me they read Ponderings of the Heart each week. I told them... please renew your subscription when the time comes! One person asked me what my favorite farm story happened to be. I promised I would re-write it again soon. It is all about an encounter I had with a big, red bull. Even my grandchildren ask me if I would retell this... so it bears repeating. Be sure to watch for my favorite story in next week s News Review. I have been happy to serve on the Alumni Board for the last three years. It is such a joy to see all these classmates from years past join together. It is a blessing to be part of the Tri-County Alumni and serve in this community. I returned home that night extremely tired, yet so joyful as I looked back over this wonderful weekend. I praised God for not only these wonderful friends of long ago, but new ones that I have met along the way serving in the Alumni. There is no greater joy than living a life of service in the various areas of our community. Are you involved in helping others? If not, would you consider serving in some capacity to help our community be a better place. God bless you. In thinking about back then I realized I missed a few things plus one that really changed the face of the main or center street. This was the disastrous fire on the street s East side. When there was a new look there was a large building for Gatewood Motors and their new and used cars could be seen where the bandstand was once located. Following its closure there were different businesses. Gas pumps are in the car lot area and food was served in the main building plus the area to service cars. Today is Neighbors and food is again being served. Although it is not open for business a Car Wash building is located at the end of this block and once there was a barber shop between the two business. After this fire the drug store was relocated to the building directly across the street. Then on this same side and at the north end, there was once an implement store and then, until its closure, was the post office. Today the fire station is located in the back. Then, across the street from the telephone office was once the town s second doctor. His office area as two rooms in their home. The lumber yard was moved to the East of the other street when it closed, there was a feed store that also used the drive on scales. Another major change of today is the large water tower with the town s name and its being noted for the covered bridge which, after it was destroyed, a replica was built at the base of the water tower and easily seen by passing motorists. Wednesday, June 4, 2014 13 Blue Oval Finale for Area Tracksters 5/22 5/24 Iowa State Track & Field Championships By Adam Meier, Regional Sports Editor Every track and field athlete across the state of Iowa wants to end its prep career on the blue oval inside Drake Stadium at the State Meet. For one group of senior athletes in Keokuk County, that blue oval served as the final destination for their high school careers and a memory that they ll carry forever. It s a great feeling to end my senior season here, said Sigourney s Kevin Weber. My senior season went fast, but it couldn t have ended any better making it to State. Weber, who qualified for State in the 110-meter high hurdles by winning Districts at BGM, placed ninth at State with a time of 15.96 seconds and was just.17 seconds away from making the finals. I didn t feel like I had the best start, Weber said. I m usually first out of the blocks through the first few hurdles, but I don t feel like I got a good enough start. It was nerve racking; different atmosphere, different track, Weber added. It was a great feeling being out there but it was a lot to take in all at once. Whereas Weber felt his slow start was the culprit of not running a quicker time, fellow Sigourney senior Becca Ohland was satisfied with how she started in the 100-meter hurdles at State. I had a really strong start, which was really good because I hadn t been starting well lately, said Ohland. But then I hit a few hurdles and that really threw me off. Ohland wound up placing 23rd out of 24 girls in Class 1A and clocked in with a time of 17.14 seconds. Despite not placing as highly as she would ve liked, Ohland still left Drake Stadium with a feeling of satisfaction. This was the best place I could have ended [my track career], Ohland said. It s really fun to run here; it s a good feeling and good atmosphere. This was my last track meet and I had to give it my all because there s nothing else left. Joining Ohland and Weber at State after qualifying in individual events at Districts were seniors Allison Hewett of English Valleys and Kelsi Sieren of Keota. Hewett, who won the District title in the 1,500 at Belle Plaine, ran a time of 5:29 at State on Saturday and placed 23rd. While Hewett knew she d be running at Drake Stadium immediately after Districts, Keota senior Kelsi Sieren had to wait around a bit to see if her second-place District time was fast enough for her to get to State. I actually found out from my classmate who was looking online right before lunch, Sieren said about learning that she d qualified. I was really excited because I didn t think I was going to make it. Sieren was the very last 1A qualifier in the 400 hurdles, making her the 24th and lowest seed at State. However, after finding out she qualified, Sieren and coach Dan Stout cranked up the practice intensity leading up to State, and it paid off in a big way. Sieren cut off half of a second from her District time and finished in 21st with a time of 1:12.26. I was really calm before the race, said Sieren. It s kind of nice that it s over, but it sucks at the same time. Finally, the lone area SICL relay to run at State, the Keota boys medley relay, also made the most of its opportunity, running a season-best time of 3:44.39 to place 12th overall. I was shaking I was so nervous, junior Ben Horras said after the race. Horras ran the opening 200 leg for the Eagles in the medley, before handing to sophomore Nate Sieren for the second 200. Senior Kolton Greiner ran the 400 leg of the relay before handing to Luke Lyle, another senior, for the 800. Lyle made a great push in the final 200 meters of the race and passed a number of runners, including Pekin s Cade Millikin, to help the Eagles finish third in the heat. Belle Plaine won the heat and finished second overall behind Mount Ayr, who took the 1A team title. So that closes the book on the careers for a number of great Keokuk County senior athletes. Their prep careers likely went by much quicker than they expected them to, but the memories they ve created in the past months and year will be there for them to look back on forever. By Adam Meier, Regional Sports Editor As good as the English Valleys girl golfers have been this season, they simply weren t up to par with their competition last Tuesday at the Class 1A Regional Final in Reinbeck. The Bears made the 90-minute drive up to Reinbeck s Oak Leaf Country Club last Tuesday morning with the goal of finishing as one of the top two teams in the six-team field, but wound up finishing in sixth. EV s top four golfers of Rylee Voss, Clair Kingland, Jessica Riegel and Sydnie Stephenson, finished with an 18-hole score of 444 one stroke behind fifthplace Central Elkader. Grundy Center took the team title with a very impressive 365, while Clarksville also advanced to State with a 407. North Tama (430) placed third and Central City (439) placed fourth. With nine-hole rounds of 50 and 48, Voss, a junior, led the Bears with a 98 and placed eighth overall. EV s next best finish came via sophomore Clair Kingland, who shot a 111 and placed 21st.
