SERMON NOTES! Scripture: Acts 6:1 7; Ephesians 4:7 16; Revelation 7:9 17 Title: Christian Ministry Preacher: Pastor Foo Yuk Yee Introduc3on 1. Ministry is speaking the gospel of Jesus Christ into people s lives 2. We do it because God s plan is to gather a people for himself by the death of Jesus where there will be no more sin, evil and death 3. Leaders serve as examples, guides, shepherds and teachers who equip God s people 4. Support to ministry indirectly contributes to the work of ministry Reflection Do stay back to pause, reflect and pray about what God has spoken to you during the service. Please be mindful of others who may be praying. Do share with others over lunch fellowship to encourage them. Sermons are available on our church s website at livingpraise.org.sg! 3
Praiselines Share your story... Celebrating LP 25th by Annabelle Wang grew up in a small independent church, a close-knit community of about 70 regular worshippers, including children, and we gathered in a rented space in a commercial building. So, when my family moved to LP in the late 1990s, there were many things about this church which impressed me then - the sanctuary with its high ceiling and windows, the baby grand piano, the 3-digit congrega3on size and the massive compound comprised of the church building and the 2 schools. There was also a very ac3ve youth ministry - Judah Genera3on - led at the 3me by Rev Goh Yong Kuang and Chung Wee Seng, and they did what Annabelle LP does best with newcomer youths: they invited my sister, Samantha, and me to youth camp. Since then, youth ministry has been a huge aspect of my LP life, and as I reflect on the changes that LP (and its youth ministry) has been through, I can only marvel at God's sovereignty and faithfulness to us. Changes in Leadership During my 3me in the youth ministry, the Lord has brought to us different pastors to teach and shepherd the youths. They are so unlike each other in personality, but each loved (and loves) the LP youths and I learnt a lot from serving under and alongside them. 1. From Rev Goh (dog lover and cartoon ar3st), with his honesty and good humour, I learnt what it means to have joy in service despite challenges. 2. From Pastor Poon Pekya (triathlon coach and fitness enthusiast), with her no-nonsense a`tude, I learnt discipline and to push for excellence in serving the Lord. 3. From Pastor Lai Sze Khiong (Mandarin and Hokkien powerhouse), with his big heart for young people, I learnt the value of being involved in the wider Presbyterian Church in Singapore and appreciated what God was, and is, doing beyond LP. 4. From Pastor Stanley Soh (long-suffering Liverpudlian and cracker of cold jokes), with his openness and genuine interest in others, I learnt that age has no bearing on one's passion for God's young people. 5. From Pastor Roy Chang (coffee fan, one-man band and 5-kid dad), with his finger on what's trending and happening, I learnt that we need to keep up with what youths are into while teaching them God's 3meless and unchanging Word. Praiselines Changing with the 0mes On that front, we know that the youths of today are growing up in a world that is very different from 10, or even 5, years ago. With all the technological advances and use of smartphones, the way we interact with youths has necessarily evolved, too. As a teen, I used to write postcards and leeers to my Bible study group and peers, and we spent quite a bit of 3me hanging out ager church (J8 yay!) - that was how we developed our friendships. Today, the youths catch up with each other via mul3ple modes of communica3on: Whatsapp, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat (any others I've missed out? #lag #genera3ongap), and if I'm not with it, I fear that my friendship with them will not develop to its fullest poten3al. It's true that social media is no subs3tute for good old fashioned face-to-face in-the-flesh interac3on, but I have had to adapt and embrace tech as a tool for shepherding the youths. And the youth leaders need much wisdom from the Lord in naviga3ng the rapidly-changing social landscape, alongside our youths, while keeping their focus on our Lord Jesus Christ. Partnering Parents Another area of change which I think has, by God's grace and working, done the youth ministry (and LP) a lot of good is the increased interac3ons between parents and their teens' youth leaders. Over the years, the youth ministry has aimed to be more deliberate in mee3ng with parents, recognising that we are partnering them in their efforts to raise God-fearing teenagers. It's not that parents weren't involved in the past; but the Meet-the- Parents sessions have provided me with a plalorm to share with parents what their daughters have learnt in Bible study, and also catch up on what the parents' concerns are for their kids. (I confess it's been a while since I last met the parents formally, but will arrange one soon!) And with the youths going through the same Bible study materials as their parents in cell groups, which was not always the case when I was a youth, I am assured that parents and youth leaders are largely on the same page when it comes to iden3fying areas of growth in the lives of the youth. I thank God for this privilege to pray with parents for their youths' specific needs. As LP turns 25, the same things that impressed me back when I first came, s3ll leave me in awe when I stop to think about it. Even more awesome is God's work in LP, for every adult and young adult who has been through LP's youth ministry, and who is s3ll here in LP today, is a testament to God's grace and goodness, not only to them, but also to the LP family, who has supported them in their growth. This support has been a tremendous blessing to me and my prayer is that, with God's help and in full reliance on Him, LP will con3nue to be a place for youths, former youths, new believers and not-so-new believers to know Jesus Christ and to mature in holy and Godly living. #tothenext25yearsandbeyond #bringiton #grea3sthyfaithfulness Living Praise Youth Ministry (LPYM) in recent years. 5
THANKSGIVING, PRAYERS & ANNOUNCEMENTS Youth Ministry Living Praise Youth is passionate about seeing young people put, persevere and pass on their faith in Jesus Christ for the glory of God. We thank God for the opportunity to learn about biblical sexuality through reading Liele Black Books: Sex by Scoe Perry and ask that God will help our youths to see that the gig of sex is best enjoyed in God s design for marriage between one man and one woman and no where else. May God help our youths to find forgiveness in the gospel of Jesus Christ for their sexual sins and grant them a passion for his purity. May God grant our youths the wisdom to know how they can live wisely in this highly sexualised world. May God strengthen our youths to live not for themselves but God. During this school holidays, may God help our youths to know him beeer through the reading of his Word and to have good conversa3ons about Jesus with their friends. We ask these things in the name of Jesus, for the joy of our youths and the glory of God. Amen. Young Adult Ministry SYNOD s Synod Training & Exposure Program (STEP) This is part of our Presbyterian Synod s ini3a3ve to reach out to young adults of our various Presbyterian churches. This 3-week program (15 May 2 June) aims to expose the young adults to learn more about: Presbyterianism, history of our Presbyterian Church of Singapore, theological training, partnerships with our Presbyterian Community Services, school ministries in our Presbyterian Schools, etc. The purpose is to enable and encourage young adults to consider serving God full 3me in their respec3ve churches or in the mission field. We thank God for our young adults - Tabitha Lee and Maehew Peh who were able to be part of this year s STEP. May God con3nue to work in and through each of their lives. Young Adults Retreat 2017 Young adults live in a world where an internal war rages on - between living out their Chris3an lives in Christ and the conflic3ng values they see and face daily. The world wants to press us into its mold (Rom. 12:2), but we have been given a different paeern. How then do we live out our Chris3an lives in our workplace, in school, in our social gatherings, with our families? Walk Wisely. Walk in love. Ephesians 5:15-17 NIV Be very careful, then, how you live not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord s will is. The Wise Challenge 7-8 July 2017 @ LPPC Speaker: Rev Peter Chan (Bethany Presbyterian Church) Pray for God s con3nuing work in the lives of our young adults as they make 3me for this retreat. May they be encouraged and challenged by God s Word. May God con3nue to enable our young adults in LP to grow in their faith journey. May He con3nue to guide them in the areas of study, career choices and marriage. May each of them learn to surrender and trust in Him each step of the way and may God enable them to be a blessing to others in their homes, church fellowship, school and work places. 6
APPOINTMENT OF DEACONS 执事授任 / 就职典礼 Introduction We have just heard God s word on the role of our leaders. God in his goodness has given us both elders and deacons so that together they can care for God s church. An elder's role is very important because they care for the spiritual well being of our church members as they teach God's word to God s people. To help our elders with this work, God has given us deacons. In Acts 6, the apostles in the early church faced a problem. The church was growing, numbers were increasing. Because of this, some widows were overlooked in the daily distribution of the food. The apostles could not cope with both the ministry of word and prayer; and the daily distribution of food. So they appointed deacons to help them with the daily distribution of the food so they could focus on the ministry of word and prayer. They chose men known to be full of Spirit and wisdom. These are men of godly character and gospel conviction. This is because the practical tasks of the church requires spiritual qualifications. This is also what we see when we look at other parts of the Bible. So our deacons in taking on the practical running of the church free up our elders to look after the spiritual health of the church, so that together, God s church can be cared for. The charge Today it's my great joy to re-appoint Daniel Lok and appoint Yeo Zhi Wei as Deacons. I'm now going to ask them to come forward. During our Annual Congregation Meeting, our church re-elected Daniel Loke as a deacon and elected Yeo Zhi Wei as deacon. I'm going to ask them a series of questions. Daniel & Zhi Wei,! 1.! Do you believe One God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit - and do you!! confess anew the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord, and!! acknowledge Him as Head of the Church? Answer: Yes, I do believe! 2.! The Bible is the final authority in all matters of faith and conduct. Will you!! hold firmly to it's message and diligently use it to guide you in all your living!! and service of God's people? Answer: Yes, I will with God s help.! 3.! Will you seek to live in obedience to God's word and by his Spirit live a!! godly life being a model to God's people? Answer: Yes, I will with God s help. Daniel & Zhi Wei,! 1.! Do you accept the office of Deacon in this congregation, and promise faithfully to!! perform all the duties thereof? Answer: Yes, I do! 2.! Will you seek to take on the practical running of God's church, relying on God's strength!! and so assist our elders as they look after the spiritual health of God's church?!! Answer: Yes, I will with God s help. 7
APPOINTMENT OF DEACONS 执事授任 / 就职典礼 Thank you Daniel & Zhi Wei for answering these questions truthfully before God and his people. God now has a question for all of us. God says in Hebrew 13,! Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because! they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this! so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no! benefit to you. (Hebrews 13:17) The question that God has for us is this. God's people at Living Praise, will you promise to obey your elders and deacons as they follow Christ? Will you submit to their authority because they are accountable to God for you? Will you do it so their work will be a joy and not a burden? And all God's people respond, raising their hand answer: Yes, we will with God s help Prayer I'm now going to ask all our elders (both Serving and non-serving) to come forward and lay their hands on Daniel and Zhi Wei as we pray for them. Let us pray, O eternal and ever-blessed God, our creator and redeemer, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we thank you for saving us and choosing us to be your church, the body of our Lord Jesus Christ. We thank you for ruling over us by your Holy Spirit through your word by the service of men who teach and preach your word to us. Showing us what is right and protecting us from falsehood. We thank you for Daniel and Zhi Wei. We pray that they will be diligent in looking after the practical running of your church so that our elders can devote their energies to teaching your word and prayer. Give them both strength we pray when they find the work difficult. May they rely on you as they serve your church. Lastly, we pray for ourselves. May we have confidence in our leaders. Help us to trust their decisions, to know they are made with our interests at heart as they seek to be obedient to you. Help us to submit to their authority, because they keep watch over us and have to give an account to you. Help us to do this so that their work will be a joy and not a burden. We pray these things in Jesus' name. Amen. 8
