H ere at Little Flower, we celebrate nearly 500 Baptisms per year. We also celebrate approximately 100 weddings per year. Sacramental moments like these, in such large numbers, give us great cause to rejoice and be filled with hope and optimism. There s nothing like the joy and happiness that are captured in these moments of celebration. Our prayers for a newly baptized infant child, and our prayers for a newly married couple, are always for the success, happiness, fulfillment, and peace that we hope will be their lived experience, as they strive for a full and complete life. Oh, how we wish that everything could always be so pristine and perfect for them. Oh, how we wish we could shield them from every future challenge and hurt. But, we know that life is not easy. We know that it has its ups and downs. As people of faith, we also know that we need to keep our beginnings in mind, where we started the journey with assurances of the nearness and blessings of Christ. For all of us, the high waves and the strong winds of life can, indeed, be unsettling and frightful. No one ever asks to encounter duress. No one ever longs to live life the hard way. Whether it s family or marital problems, challenging financial issues, professional or relational difficulties, fragile health circumstances or addictions, personal disappointments, or even mere worries about tomorrow; there s plenty that we bear along the journey of life to make it complex. Add to these realities the battle between good and evil, between virtue and vice, between holiness and godlessness, and the spiritual journey, too, can seem to be a daunting experience as well. Yet, in truth, the spiritual journey is not separate from all the other components of life. It is actually part of the same whole. Even more profoundly, it is the thread that connects the realities of life together. It is the underpinning of an integrated life. Found at our core, and with the potential to pervade every nook and cranny of our lives, a healthy and cultivated spiritual life gives direction to our lived experience and fosters our orientation toward God, and reliance on him. These themes are beautifully captured in every Baptism. They are captured, too, at every Catholic wedding. We all benefit when we keep our beginnings in mind; where and how it all began, with such hope and grace. Life is not easy and perfect. Our Lord knew we would need help. He knew the Apostles needed (and would need in the future) assurances of his nearness. The account of our Lord walking on the waters of the Sea of Galilee and calming the tempest storm, miraculously made clear the power of God to bring calm to any torment, understanding to any worry, tranquility in the midst of any storm. Our Lord didn t promise that there would be no high waves or strong winds in life. Nor did he says that there would be no storms. But he did say, do not be afraid. Yes. Christ comes to us in manifold ways throughout our lives. He is especially present to us in the difficulties and duress. The cross has always been an essential part of the fabric of life. It reflects the Paschal Mystery, i.e., the movement from darkness to light, from sin to freedom, from Good Friday to Easter Sunday, from death to life. Christ is our origin. He is our destiny. Yet, in the interim we live for him and we are not alone. Despite the difficulties, Christ is by our side. This is why our Catholic spiritualty is so important. It reminds us of our beginnings in Christ. It also strengthens us to place our reliance on him, while maintaining our view on eternity. A healthy spiritual life keeps us grounded in the knowledge of our origins and of our destiny. It also gives us the strength to live life in the interim. Be not afraid, says the Lord. In his words we have the assurances and blessings of Christ, even in the storms.

Departing Little Flower at 8:30am, our journey will include a visit to San Pedro Church in Tavernier, where we will enjoy a tour, the celebration of Mass, and then a nice lunch at a nearby restaurant. Following lunch, we will stop at Saint Justin Martyr Church in Key Largo, enjoy a tour of the church and the prayer gardens, participate in a public recitation of the rosary, and enjoy afternoon coffee or tea before making our way to an Island Souvenir shop, before returning to Coral Gables. We should be returning to Little Flower by 5:00pm. There will only be 52 seats available on the bus. Call our Advancement Director, Jorge Perez, now for ticket information and to get your name on the list. First come first serve. Should be a great way to enjoy a relaxing October Day with fellow parishioners. More information to come. ITALY TRIP WITH FR. FLORES AND THE CARMELITE SISTERS Good things are worth planning for.
