BIBLE PROPHECIES and FULFILLMENTS PREFACE Bible Prophecies and Fulfillments started as a series of adult Bible studies covering most of the prophetical scriptures. Now in its present form it has been prepared for downloading on the Internet. The study is in three parts, each being complete on its own. 1. THE BIRTH OF JESUS CHRIST 2. THE LIFE AND MINISTRY OF JESUS CHRIST 3. THE PASSION, DEATH AND RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST Each part is primarily for adults, students or older teenagers and should be led by a Christian group leader or leaders sharing sections of the study. It is important for each group member to have a copy of the script in order to write in the Bible verses on the dotted lines provided. The study is detailed and will take time and application but when completed, with prayer for God s guidance of the Holy Spirit, will give an in depth understanding of both the Old and New Testaments and their relation to each other as the whole counsel of God. Many of the prophecies have already been fulfilled. They thus provide an authentic foundation of expectancy for the fulfillment of the remaining prophetic scriptures; the declaration and exaltation of the Lord Jesus Christ being the reason for the Bible. For students interested in both the Bible and English as a foreign language, the study will be especially helpful. It is also suitable for personal study by Christians or Seekers wanting a deeper knowledge of the Bible, its historical significance and an understanding of God s word for today the wonder and glory of God s revelation of His salvation and love in the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ as the personal Saviour for all eternity. The holy scriptures which are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 3: 15 AV

PART 1 THE BIRTH OF JESUS CHRIST INTRODUCTION BIBLE PROPHECIES and FULFILLMENTS Prophecies foretelling the Birth of Jesus Christ, the only beloved Son of God, are recorded throughout the Old Testament. The promises of His coming to redeem sinful mankind are to be found even near the beginning of the Book of Genesis and culminate in the first chapters of the New Testament Gospels. These God inspired promises are words conveyed through the prophets, sometimes called seers, about events predicted to take place in the future. Other births are also prophesied in the Scriptures. The births of Isaac, the twins Jacob and Esau are foretold in Genesis; and in later books of the Old Testament the births of Samson and Samuel, all prophecies concerning long-awaited children. Likewise, in the New Testament there is the detailed account recorded in St. Luke s Gospel of the promised birth of John the Baptist. These promises to older couples are only recorded as instances in the Scriptures and not as a continuing announcement of a birth of unique and world significance THE MESSIAH. Unlike the other children named by God before birth, the promised Messiah, meaning the Anointed One, was the Child in possession of many wonderful names recorded throughout the Bible. Prophecies (P) concerning the birth of Jesus have their Fulfillment (F) in the beginning of the Gospels of the New Testament. It is amazing that prophecies concerning the birth of the Messiah made hundreds of years before are fulfilled in exact detail in the Gospels accounts. In Parts 2 and 3 Prophecies made by Jesus Christ are marked *P Your Word is Truth. John 17: 17 We have the prophetic word. You do well to pay close attention to it as a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day breaks and the Morning Star rises in your hearts. 2 Peter 1: 19 THE PROPHECIES AND THEIR FULFILLMENTS THE CHILD - TO BE BORN OF THE SEED OF A WOMAN The earliest prophecy is to be found near the beginning of the Bible. Right from the start, the birth of this Child was unique, for He was to be born of the singular seed of a woman, not the seeds of a man and a woman. At the very beginning of Scripture there is this indication of the Virgin birth, of an offspring to bring victory of good over evil; the final triumph of righteousness in the battle against SIN - but through suffering. This promised Child was to be the Saviour and the Light of the World born to live a human life on earth yet without sin. Only the Sinless One, sent by the Father as the perfect sacrifice, could rescue guilty sinners from the power of Satan. Unlike God s Word of Truth, Satan is a liar and the father of lies. John 8: 44 P Genesis 3: 15 ------ F John 1:29------ F Galatians 4: 4- ------ F Revelation 13: 8b The Lamb slain...-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This was God's plan before the beginning of Creation; the threefold work in the Persons of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. God's Son was sent, born of a woman, as a truly human fulfillment for He was both Man and God - the Messiah. The LORD, Who put the stars and planets in place, condescended in His mighty work of redemption to become a little Child a vulnerable Babe! God's ultimate purpose, as the Scriptures record, was to defeat the arch enemy Satan and to dwell with His redeemed people; the deep longing of Almighty God's loving heart.

THE CHILD BORN FROM THE SEED OF ABRAHAM The Christ, the Anointed One of God, was to come from Abraham's line. The genealogy of Jesus Christ was begun through the son promised to Abraham and Sarah in their old age and named, Isaac, by God before birth. Isaac was the promised Seed - not seeds, for Abraham had other sons. All the land of Canaan was promised to Abraham and to be given to his posterity only through Isaac, the promised Offspring. It was God Who changed Abram, his original name, to Abraham meaning Father of a Multitude. In an everlasting covenant with a sevenfold structure, God promised Abraham that he would be the father of many nations and that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. When these promises were made, Abraham still had no heir but he had great faith and so believed God. Through Abraham and ultimately through Christ all peoples would be blessed and righteousness restored. This vast number of people includes the followers of Jesus, the spiritual descendants of Abraham. P Genesis 12: 2a, 3b ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- P Genesis 17: 19 ----- P Read Genesis 18: 12 and 17: 17 Sarah laughed when she overheard the promise of a son in her old age. It is not often remembered but Abraham also laughed! P Genesis 22: 18a ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- F Genesis 21:2, 3 -- -- F Galatians 3: 8--- -- F Galatians 3: 16, 29 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -- -- -- -- THE CHILD - BORN FROM THE SEED OF JACOB AND THE TRIBE OF JUDAH God's promise to Abraham passed to his son, Isaac, then to his grandson, the younger twin, Jacob (Israel); and not to the older twin Esau, who held the birthright and blessing in little regard. The Messianic promise made to Israel next passed to his son, Judah. P Numbers 24: 17------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ P Genesis 49: 10------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- F Matthew 1: 2---- --

The seal worn by Judah representing his tribe may have been a lion, a royal animal in the Ancient Middle East. Israel, as his days were ending, uttered prophetic words concerning his sons, the Children of Israel. He described his son, Judah as Genesis 49: 9--- Written over five decades after the Resurrection, another name of Jesus is Revelation 5: 5-- THE CHILD - BORN OF THE HOUSE OF DAVID From idolatrous Moab came Ruth, widowed daughter in law of Naomi from the land of Judah. In the first of the two Old Testament books named after a woman - Ruth, who married kinsman Boaz from Bethlehem bore a son, named Obed. He was the father of Jesse, who was the father of King David. The Promise of a royal scepter or staff, symbol of sovereignty, was first fulfilled in King David from Bethlehem in Judea; and ultimately in time by the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ, entitled King of kings and Lord of lords. Anointed by Samuel, Saul, Israel's first king came from the tribe of Benjamin. However, the promised Child was to come from the house of David, Israel's second king from the tribe of Judah and to be given the throne of David. It was in the heart of King David to build a House for the Lord; but instead, God promised David a royal house, a royal line and an eternal throne; thus fulfilling the Lord's promise of blessing to the nations through Israel and so initiating the Messianic Hope. Since the days of Abraham, God had been building Israel and through His promise of an heir from the house of David, the Messiah would come and ultimately God's honour and praise throughout the earth. Read Isaiah 11: 1-10 P Isaiah 11: 1--- ----- The Sprout from the Root of Jesse shall indeed grow according to the words of the prophet Isaiah and One will come to rule over the Gentiles. F Romans 15: 12 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE PROPHET NATHAN'S MESSAGE TO KING DAVID P 2 Samuel 7: 12, 13 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After King David s reign, not all the kings did what was right in the sight of the Lord. God desired His Chosen People to cease to do evil and learn to do right. The Lord wanted offerings from the heart and not countless hypocritical animal sacrifices. Because of the sins of king and people, the Promised Land was divided after the death of King Solomon into the northern kingdom of Israel (Samaria or Ephraim) and the southern Kingdom of Judah. Consequently, came Isaiah's prophetic word of God's judgement against both kingdoms. Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth! For the Lord has spoken: I have nourished and brought up sons and have made them great and exalted, but they have rebelled against Me and broken away from Me. Isaiah 1: 2 Isaiah's words from the Lord prophesied events to be fulfilled in both the near and distant future. Often these visions were fulfilled within a few years, the signs coming to pass with the birth and naming of his two sons born to a young woman (virgin), Isaiah's second wife, called the prophetess. His prophecies also continued the Messianic hope.

P Isaiah 9: 6, 7 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- P Isaiah 55: 4 The future fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecies came with the birth of the Virgin's Son, recorded at the beginning of the New Testament. The synoptic Gospels of Matthew 1: 1 17 and Luke 3: 23 38 contain the ancestral line of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Matthew records Joseph s ancestral line, the Gospel of Luke the line of Mary. This is amazing proof Jesus Christ is the Messiah. All the other Jewish family records were destroyed in A.D. 70, when Jerusalem and the Temple were destroyed by the Romans. WORDS OF PAUL TO TIMOTHY F 2 Timothy 2: 8 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE CHILD TO BE BORN OF A VIRGIN P Isaiah 7: 14a -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- F Luke 1: 27 -- THE MESSAGE OF THE ANGEL GABRIEL TO THE VIRGIN MARY Read Luke 1: 26 38 F Luke 1: 31 33 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------- THE CHILD TO BE BORN THE MESSIAH P Daniel 9: 25b ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- F Matthew 1: 1 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Words of Andrew to his brother, Simon Peter F John 1: 41 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CHILD TO BE CALLED EMMANUEL The Northern Kingdom, because of disobedience to the Lord, was eventually defeated by God's instrument of judgement - Assyria; unlike the Southern Kingdom of Judah spared at that time. Isaiah's prophetic words about the Child Emmanuel (God with us), were given to King Ahaz as God's sign to prove the vision was true and also as an assurance that Jerusalem would not then be destroyed because - God was with them. P Isaiah 7: 14 -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE MESSAGE OF THE ANGEL OF THE LORD TO JOSEPH Read Matthew 1:18 25 F Matthew 1: 23 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Many of the kings of Judah continued to do evil in the sight of the Lord and 135 years after the destruction in 721 B.C. of the Northern kingdom, the crown was finally removed from Zedekiah, the last King of Judah and the mitre from the High Priest. BUT the Lord s covenant to Abraham was an everlasting promise and the prophecy to David remains for One to reign as both Priest and King forever. Read Genesis 14: 18 20 and Hebrews Chapter 7 CHILD TO BE AN EVERLASTING PRIEST AND KING In the New Covenant, the promised Messiah was to come from the house of Judah of David's line after the order of Melchizedek and not from the priestly tribe of Levi of the house of Aaron. The Aaronic priests, in the ancient wilderness Tabernacle and later in Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem, held office without God's oath to give His confirmation. Melchizedek was King of Salem (Jerusalem) being King of Peace and King of Righteousness. He was the Priest of God Most High to whom even Abraham paid tithes and was blessed. Although Abraham was a great man favoured by God and extremely rich; always the greater blesses the lesser person. Melchizedek was both Priest and King! The writer of the Letter to the Hebrews refers to the genealogy of Melchizedek as without father or mother, a priest forever foreshadowing Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah. P Psalm 110: 4 -- P Ezekiel 21: 27 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ P Daniel 2: 44 -- F Hebrews 7: 17, 21b --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CHILD HERALDED BY A FORERUNNER P Malachi 3: 1 -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- P Malachi 4: 5 - ---- As Elijah, the prophet, came before Elisha, so too did John the Baptist come to prepare the way before Jesus, the Messiah. Just as Elijah was opposed by King Ahab and Jezebel and John the Baptist was killed at the hands of King Herod and Herodias, the same also would happen to Jesus Christ Who would be rejected, suffer and die. A VOICE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS P Isaiah 40: 3 -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MESSAGE OF THE ANGEL GABRIEL TO ZACHARIAH PROMISING THE BIRTH OF JOHN THE BAPTIST Read Luke 1: 5 23 P Luke 1: 17a ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- THE SONG OF ZECHARIAH (Father of John the Baptist) F Luke 1: 76, 77 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Words of JESUS ABOUT JOHN THE BAPTIST F Luke 7: 27 ---- ---- Read Mark 1: 1 4 Just as it is written in the Book of the prophet Isaiah: F Mark 1: 3 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- John the Baptist was the prophet of the Most High. Jesus Christ was the Son of the Most High. THE CHILD TO BE BORN IN BETHLEHEM P..Micah 5: 2 ---- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ F Luke 2: 4 5 - ----- -----

At the time of the coming birth of Christ, by the decree of Augustus Caesar, the Jews in the Holy Land, men and women, were all to be registered for taxation - each one in their own city. Mary and Joseph both belonged to the house of King David; and David s city was Bethlehem. Mary, heavily pregnant, had therefore to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, a journey that must have taken at least 3 days. Since babies only arrive when they want to come, it was indeed a miracle and God s perfect timing, through Roman decree, that Jesus was born in Bethlehem; so fulfilling the ancient prophecy made in 7th century BC and given by the prophet Micah, a contemporary of Isaiah. O Little Town of Bethlehem THE CHILD TO BE WORSHIPPED BY WISE MEN P Isaiah 60: 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------- P Isaiah 60: 6 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------- ------ NB. The names Midian, Ephah and Sheba were the sons of Keturah, Abraham's wife after the death of Sarah. VISIT OF THE WISE MEN Read Matthew 2: 1 11 F Matthew 2: 1, 2 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- F Matthew 2: 11 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THE CHILD JESUS AND THE SLAUGHTER OF THE INNOCENTS P Jeremiah 31: 15 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- ------ Read Genesis 35: 16-20 It was in Ramah (Bethlehem-Ephratah) in Judea, 5 miles south of Jerusalem that Rachel, the mother of Joseph, was buried. Rachel, the favourite wife of Jacob (Israel), died with sorrow in giving birth to her younger son. Before dying in childbirth, she wanted to name her longed for second son, Ben-oni (son of my sorrow); but on her death, Israel named him Benjamin (son on my right hand). The traditional site of Rachel's tomb is near Bethlehem, Ephrah being the old name for the Bethlehem region.

After the birth of Jesus, Herod discovered that the wise men (the Magi) had returned to their own country another way. Enraged, he sent soldiers to kill all the baby boys in Bethlehem who were two years old and under, calculating the date learned from the wise men, concerning the new star in the heavens they had followed in their journey to Bethlehem. F Matthew 2: 17, 18 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------- --------- Herod's most wicked decree was to make sure the new-born King of the Jews did not survive. Unlike other kings, Jesus, the Son of God was born KING! It also should be noted that in the following Scriptures the Child takes precedent, being always mentioned first before His mother. Part 1 CONCLUSION One of the names of Jesus is The Word of God. Bible Prophecies concerning God s beloved only Son have come true in the Fulfillments of His Advent, His first coming. Although Jesus was born in a humble stable and not in a royal palace, there was a unique and divine proclamation of His royalty. Angels throngs filled the skies above Bethlehem with heavenly glory as the news of the Saviour of the world was announced to lowly Jewish shepherds. A glorious star, God s sign in the heavens, summoned the Wise Men (Gentiles) from the east who came, bearing costly gifts, to worship the new-born King. Shepherds and the Wise Men rejoiced at His birth but at the same time the usurper King Herod was jealous and all Jerusalem troubled. Yes, the Sovereign Lord God planned His Son s first coming from the foundation of the earth. Thus the forces of good and evil were in opposition throughout the O.T. After the birth of the Holy Child, Satan s strategy of war soon erupted again, with Herod s wicked and horrific massacre of infants in Bethlehem, an opposition continued throughout the Life and Ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ.
