Tomatoes and Peaches E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org The Feast of St Bernard We re celebrating the feast of our patron, St. Bernard, this coming Thursday. In addition to the regular 8am Mass, we re having a special 6pm Mass followed by a picnic on the great lawn outside of the church. It s a bring-your-ownchairs-blankets-and-food kind of picnic. Why not talk to your neighbors and friends about attending the Mass and then picnicing together afterwards? It s a good way to build community and encourage people to be connected to this beautiful parish family that is named in honor of St. Bernard. I hope to see you there. Off to College We re offering prayers not only for our young people heading off to college for the first time, but also for their parents who feel a bit traumatized by this milestone! Anyone wanting a sending-off blessing, just ask and we ll be glad to offer a prayer for a good semester ahead. Tomatoes! Garden tomatoes! It s been a great summer for tomatoes and the home-grown variety are just heavenly. It s also peach season, and to bite into a fresh peach from the farm on Long Island is equally divine. Have you noticed how we sometimes use sacred descriptions for our best food? In today s gospel (John 6:51-58) Jesus also talks about heavenly food: I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world. But instead of smiling and salivating as you did when reading my description of summer tomatoes and peaches, the people who heard Jesus talk about real heavenly food were shocked and probably evenly disgusted. How could this man Jesus even suggest that they should eat his body? This sounded like cannibalism. Today we know the full story -- he gave us his body and blood under the form of bread and wine. And we are used to the idea of receiving his body-- indeed we say Amen! each time we proclaim the Body of Christ at communion time. Still, it s an odd idea. Many young children say eewwww when first introduced to the idea that we eat Jesus body when we receive communion. So why would Jesus choose this way of being present to us, since it would make people so uncomfortable? Perhaps we could look at a common saying to get a glimpse into this: You are what you eat. We usually use this phrase to refer to the health consequences of our diet, but it could also apply to our spiritual diet as well. If we eat the Body of Christ, we become the Body of Christ. With his Blood coursing through our veins we are empowered to forgive like him, feed others like him, be patient like him, heal like him, inspire like him, care like him, etc. So just as we ought not take summer tomatoes and peaches for granted, but rather savor them, let us also savor the real Divine Food and not take it for granted. Each time we receive Jesus in communion, let s be sure to take some time to savor it by making some quiet time to reflect on how we are becoming what we just ate. 3

ADULT FAITH FORMATION Diane Vella, Pastoral Associate Summer Bible Course: The Book of Revelation (Pt. 5) by Diane Vella, Pastoral Associate We continue with part 4 of our review of some of the important things that every Catholic should know about the ever-intriguing, ever-confusing Book of Revelation, the very last book of the Bible. Once again, keep in mind the two keys that we are using to unlock the mystery of this book : 1) it s written in the style of Apocalyptic literature, a form of ancient literature that uses dreams, visions, symbols and bizarre images to convey a hidden message about what was going on in the world at the time, and 2) the historical context of the book was the extreme and brutal persecution and killing of Jews and Christians by the Romans, beginning around 64 A.D. and continuing through the time of the book s writing, approximately 90-100 A.D. Now let s look at a couple of the bizarre scenes in the book, and see how we can use these two interpretive keys to help us understand what s going on. We will not have the time in this mini-course to look at every single scene and symbol in the Book of Revelation, but if you have been following this series you are beginning to see how the seemingly bizarre visions and descriptions in the book function first to offer hope and encouragement to the persecuted Christians of the time and of all times and second, to disguise and hide (remember that apocalyptic means hidden ) Christians strong disdain for and criticism of the cruel, persecuting rulers and nations of their time. Let s now look at one of the scenes from Revelation where this second dynamic is at work. Take a few minutes to read chapters 12 and 13. The woman clothed with the sun (yes, Irish friends, this is the reference in the lyrics of the song Lady of Knock!) represents not Mary, as later Christians thought, but rather God s faithful people, both Jews and Christians. It is Israel who gave birth to the Messiah (hence the connection with Mary, who physically gave birth to the Messiah). Israel s son, the Messiah, is pursued by a huge red dragon, symbolizing the forces of evil in the world, which are sometimes personified in the Bible as the satan (Hebrew for adversary ) or the diabolos (Greek for slanderer; English equivalent is devil ). The good Messiah and his followers are pursued by evil, and the battle is bitter and fierce, but they are not conquered by it. The dragon loses the battle but not the war yet! Here John is describing in symbolic language the mighty struggle of his time and of all times of the good against the ever-present forces of evil. But the evil still lies in waiting for another opportunity. And it comes in the form of a beast who comes out of the sea with ten horns and seven heads, and seemingly made up of the parts of different predatory wild animals. Fascinated, the whole world followed after the beast. Who can compare with the beast or who can fight against it? This beast utters proud boasts and blasphemies against God, and was allowed to wage war against God s holy people and to have authority over the tribes, peoples and nations of the earth. Then a second beast appears, somewhat in cahoots with the first beast, and it forced all the people...to be given a stamped image on their right hands or their foreheads so that no one could buy or sell except one who had the stamped image or the beast s name (Rev. 13:16) The hidden message to Christians is that the first beast is the Roman Empire, with its 7 heads (emperors) who have persecuted Jews and Christians with great power (10 horns) and their blasphemies were the imperial claims to divine status. The second beast might represent either false prophets who supported the cruel emperors, or the local authorities who submitted to them and did their dirty work. This section concludes with the cryptic reference to the number of the beast...that stands for a person. His number is six hundred and sixty-six. (Rev. 13:18) Contrary to popular interpretation, this does not represent the devil, it represents the Roman Emperor Nero, who started the persecutions. Note that 666 is a number that represents, in the Biblical world, triple imperfection (i.e., 6 is one number short of the number of perfection, 7). They could not directly name the beast; it was too dangerous! These chapters are a perfect example of how Christians resisted and criticized Roman rule in code language. Atlanta Fire Chief Fired: Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran lost his job because, on his own time, he self-published a men's devotional book that briefly mentions the biblical view of sex as reserved for marriage between one man and one woman. Cochran was ordered to complete "sensitivity training" after complaints from activists who objected to his Christian views. An investigation concluded that Cochran did not discriminate against anyone but the mayor fired him anyway. "Your action against Chief Cochran appears to violate fundamental principles of free speech and religious freedom. The only way Chief Cochran could avoid his views would be to disown his religion..." said Georgia's congressional delegation. Chief Cochran is appealing his termination. (adfmedia.org, 4/9/15; washingtonpost.com, 2/8/15) Supreme Court Victory: A small church in Gilbert, AZ, uses signs to invite & direct the community to its services but was restricted to small, 6 square foot 14 hour display temporary signs while home association 80 square foot, political 32 square foot, and ideological 20 square foot signs are permitted for display indefinitely. In a unanimous decision, the U.S. Supreme Court decisively affirmed that the government cannot play favorites when it comes to free speech. "The government (ordinance) cannot target one form of speech with severe restrictions while allowing more speech for others in similar circumstances," said Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel, Jeremy Tedesco. Sophia, a young girl, encouraged by her mother and grandmother, conducted a food drive by asking her neighbors to leave a bag of food outside their doors, which she picked up and brought to the pantry. Thanks to those who are shopping for school supplies while there are good bargains. Here is a suggested list to help our approximately 125 school-age children whose families visit our pantry: Blue, black, red pens Marbled composition books (not spiral since they are not permitted) Pencils Pencil sharpeners Erasers 2 or 3 binders Loose leaf paper Pocket folders (any colors) Packs of 3 x 5 index cards 24-box crayons Packs of 3 x 3 Post-its (type) Box of colored pencils Markers Highlighters 10 We will gladly accept any school supplies before our children return to classes. As always, thank you for your kind generosity! What to do? (a.k.a. W.W.J.D?) As you surely know, we have several homeless men who spend time on our church grounds. We have been in intensive conversation with the County s Department of Social Services and Adult Protective Services personnel. We have also spoken with members of the Long Island Homelessness Coalition and the 8 th Precinct. The homeless can receive help through all of these agencies, but oftentimes are unable to endure the red tape or follow the rules. We will certainly provide food for them through our pantry and will put them in personal contact with those who have the wherewithal to find them shelter, but giving them money does not solve the problem, and often increases it. In addition, groups of organized adults, who often have small children in tow, come from the city carrying signs and asking for money. We have been advised to warn them that our property is private and they do not have the right to beg from people coming to and from church. These organized groups are showing up in many parishes, giving us cause to worry that the young children may be trafficked for the purpose of arousing pity among church-going people like ourselves. Here again, please do not give anyone money who is begging outside of church. All of our masses are covered by members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, who will gladly provide food to those who ask. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR TWO GRADUATING CANTORS Christina Russo graduated from Hofstra this summer with a music major, specializing in voice performance. She plans to attend graduate school at SUNY-Binghamton in the fall, studying opera performance. Matthew Brzezinski just graduated from Division Avenue High School. He plans to attend Temple University this fall, majoring in actuarial studies. He also plans to participate in choral activities while attending Temple. We thank them for the gifts they have so generously shared with us and pray that they always remember that God is with them in all that they do and all that they accomplish. Our wonderful volunteers who deliver Meals-on-Wheels on Fridays! 11
