ATTENDANCE March 21-22, 2015 2,925 RECONCILIATION MONDAY March 30, 2015 3:00PM - 9:00PM Come celebrate God s mercy. It s a great thing to hear about God s merciful love. It s even better to experience it personally! No matter how long it may have been since your last confession - weeks, years or even decades, there is no time like the start of Holy Week to know the mercy of God in the Sacrament of Penance. Seize this moment of grace at the start of Holy Week. Bring a friend. Reminder: There are no confessions on Holy Thursday, Good Friday or Holy Saturday! Please pray for our recently deceased parishioners, family & friends. Donald Bleakley Clyde Chamberlain LEAVE A LEGACY TO ST. COLUMBA PARISH BY INCLUDING A BEQUEST IN YOUR WILL.

From the desk of Fr. Michael: Holy Week is the last week of Lent before Easter, beginning on Palm Sunday and ending on Holy Saturday. Holy Week probably developed in the 4th century Jerusalem, possibly beginning with St. Cyril of Jerusalem. Christians from all over the world would take pilgrimages to the Holy Land, and the Church of Jerusalem provided rites and worship dedicated to reenacting the final events of Christ s life. The first account we have of such rites is the diary of the pilgrimage of Egeria to Jerusalem around AD 381. Gradually many of these customs and holy days spread to the wider Christian world. Holy Week is now the part of the Church Year where Jesus final moments are commemorated. The final three days of Holy Week are part of the Paschal Triduum. Holy Week consists of the following events: Palm Sunday - of the Lord s Passion On the sixth Sunday of lent we commemorate Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Mass includes blessing of the palm branches, a procession and the Reading of the Passion. The liturgical color is red. Spy Wednesday: This is an old and uncommon name for the Wednesday of Holy Week, which commemorates Judas agreement to betray Jesus (see Mathew 26: 3-5, 14-16). Holy Thursday ( Maundy Thursday) The name Maundy Thursday is derived from Jesus mandate to love one another as he loves us. This day celebrates the institution of the sacraments of Holy Eucharist and Ordination. It concludes with a Procession to the Repository for Prayer and Adoration until midnight. Good Friday of the Lord s Passion A Day of fasting and Abstinence commemorating Jesus crucifixion and death. Worship customs include Veneration of the Cross, communion from the reserved Maundy Thursday hosts, and the preaching of the Passion (reading excerpts of the Passion story from John s gospel). In the Catholic Church, the liturgical color was formerly black, but now is red. Holy Saturday: This is the final night before the Feast of the Resurrection, which begins at the Great Easter Vigil. Other customs and events, including Tenebrae, have developed as Holy Week customs. Generally, Holy Week is a busy time for Catholic and Orthodox Christians, as we build up to the Queen of all Church Feasts, Easter (Pascha)!

Michael: HOLY WEEK SCHEDULE Palm Sunday, March 29, 2015 Saturday Vigil - 5:30pm Sunday - 7:30am, 9:00am 10:30am, 12:00 noon Holy Monday - March 30 Reconciliation (Confessions) 3:00pm - 9:00pm Holy Tuesday - March 31 Chrism Mass at St. Patrick s Cathedral - 4:00pm All are Welcome! Tap on it and that saint being celebrated that day appears with a short biography. A really neat feature is that you can look up patron saints. Did you know the Patron Saint of Bloggers is St. Paul? There are also many prayers asking the intercession of the Saints. Best of all, the App is free! FR.
