Holston Valley Baptist Association Mission-Aider Volume 132 August 2016 Issue 11 Seminary Extension Classes Available in Holston Valley Several times in the Scripture we are told that the church is to edify and/or equip the body of Christ. We can do this in several ways, such as praying together, strengthening fellowship, the preaching of the Word, and studying the Word. A unique opportunity has been presented to our association by offering Bible study classes through the Seminary Extension ministry of the Southern Baptist Convention. The purpose of the ministry is to provide theological education and ministry training to church leaders and members where they live. We will begin offering classes this year and are thankful to Rev. Gary Gerhardt, pastor of Church Hill First Baptist who will serve as instructor for this first class. The first class will be How to Understand the Bible ; registration for the class will be on Tuesday, August 30 th at 6:00 PM. Surgoinsville First Baptist will be providing the classroom space. This class will meet for three hours once a week for 8 weeks. The cost for the class will be $190.99. The class is open to both clergy and the lay members of the church. You can pre-register for the class by sending a $50 deposit to the associational office making the checks payable to Holston Valley Baptist Association and designating Seminary Extension on the Memo Line. If your pastor or one of your members wishes to take the class but needs help with the cost, please consider paying for part or all of the fee. For those interested in pursuing a Diploma in Biblical Studies, this class will be a requirement toward that Diploma; however, you do not have to pursue the diploma to take the class. For more information, please feel free to call the office at 423-272-7318. HVBA ANNUAL MEETING MONDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2016 / 4:30 PM PERSIA BAPTIST CHURCH, ROGERSVILLE

Page 2 Mission-Aider Hawkins County Pregnancy HELP Center NEWS! What a great time and blessing we had at VBS here at the pregnancy center ministry. The mission team kicked the week of VBS with a block party at the City Park. Monday-Thursday they led VBS at the pregnancy center ministry and other locations throughout Rogersville. They did more work to the pregnancy center ministry while they were here adding shelving to the back to equip me to store baby equipment more easily and efficiently. They also brought an insulated trailer and built shelving in it to allow more storage of equipment, clothing, and other items. Through the efforts of the mission team there were 7 professions of faith in Christ. I cannot thank them enough for their efforts and service to the pregnancy center ministry, the families we serve, and the community of Rogersville. A big thank you to Jan Moore for coming to help us each day with VBS. We appreciate you so much for helping us!!!

Volume 132 Issue 11 Page 3 Hawkins County Pregnancy HELP Center NEWS! (con t) I want to extend a special thank you to Claire Roberson for her hard work and volunteering this summer at the Pregnancy Center. She has been a very helpful and valuable resource. She has been a tremendous blessing in helping me organize, straighten, and getting things accomplished. Thank you Claire! I appreciate your servant heart and great work ethic. Coming up Sept 10 th, 2016 at 11 a.m. the second annual Walk for Life!!! I am excited about the walk this year. Our theme is He is Strong. I love this- it is all because of Him and His great love. He is strong when we are weak, discouraged, overwhelmed by the world and its condition, he is the Hope and peace amidst the chaos. This year we will have shirts for both adults and children. To register for the walk and get your shirt please come by or call the office. Looking forward to us uniting and taking a stand for Life and the unborn. Amanda Vaughn, Pregnancy Center Director Coming In September!!! Invite a state missionary to your church and hear stories about how the lives of people are being changed because you give to the Golden Offering. Contact a Tennessee Baptist missionary and arrange a time that fits your schedule for them to share with your church about Tennessee missions and ministry. Cooperative Program funds make it possible for state missionaries to come to your church at no expense to you. Just invite them. If you need a list to choose from you can find it on the internet. Just google Golden Offering for Tennessee Missions or call the association office, 423-272-7381 and we will provide you a list of state missionaries. PLEASE SEND US YOUR VBS REPORTS. WE NEED TO HEAR FROM EVERY CHURCH SO OUR RECORDS WILL BE COMPLETE!

Page 4 Mission-Aider Zacchaeus was a Wee Little Man I have fond memories of gathering with other children my age in the basement of Loudon First Baptist every Sunday night for Sunbeams. This was for preschool children to learn about missions and also do missions. Many of the songs that I sing today were ones I learned in Sunbeams: This Little Light of Mine, Deep and Wide, and yes, Zaccheus was a Wee Little Man, etc. Since we were preschoolers and couldn t read very well, I remember Bible stories being read to us and acted out in flannel graph. (If you are younger than 45 and don t have a clue what flannel graph is, you can Google it). When doing some research about Sunbeams, I learned that the name was changed to Mission Friends in 1970. But it took a while for the name change to take hold at my church, kind of like many of us still referring to Discipleship Training as Training Union. When I graduated from Sunbeams, I moved on into Royal Ambassadors still learning about and doing missions but also beginning to do Bible drills. Many of the Scripture verses which I have memorized came from Bible drills in RA s. I am a firm believer in missions training in our churches. What a joy it was to receive a call in the office about a lady in one of our churches needing some guidance about restarting GA s (Girls in Action) in her church. And Linda worked diligently to resource this lady so that she can begin well. Many of our churches faithfully train our children in missions and doing missions. Are you training the children in your church about missions and doing missions? Praise the Lord if you are. If you are not but would like to start, please contact the Associational office and we will resource you in doing so. Would You Like a History of Your Church? While doing some work at the Associational Office last week, a mission team from Atlanta discovered some treasure. Several copies of history books were found of the Holston Valley Baptist Association. There are paperback and hard back books written by Glen Toomey in the early 1980 s. These books are no longer in print and also include history about each of the churches that were part of the association in 1983. We have several copies and wish to make them available to the general public while supplies last. So step right up and get your copy now at the HVBA office. Family Features Rev. John Seymore recently resigned as pastor of Lone Oak Church. We send prayers to John and his family and also for Lone Oak in their search for a new pastor. Caney Creek has called Rev. Bill Durham as pastor. We welcome Bill and his family to the association and are praying for them. Christian sympathy is extended to the family of Rev. Dee Hicks. Rev. Hicks had formerly pastored at Beech Creek and Bethel. We extend Christian sympathy to the family of Rev. Doug Seymore in the loss of his mother. Doug is our current moderator in Holston Valley Baptist Association and Pastor Assistant of the East Rogersville Baptist Church.
