PASTOR S PAGE A week in the life of... Monday. We received an update on the progress of our front steps project. The good news is that our church is sitting on solid rock. The bad news is that our church is sitting on solid rock. In order to secure the walls of the new landing, the construction workers have to break up nearly two feet of granite to reach the proper depth. That s taking longer; it has damaged some of their equipment; and removing the rock and soil from the premises has been a challenge. Like so many construction projects (home improvements, included)... brace yourselves! Then off to a meeting at St. Frances Academy. Tuesday. I visited my mother and sisters in Philadelphia. Mom is as pleasant as ever, and she even called my sisters by name a first in months! She still doesn t quite understand that we re her children, even though we call her Mom. But she is a joy to be with. Returned home and went to Men s Day Choir practice. Wednesday. We had a terrific meeting with a couple of folks planning the production of a podcast on Black Catholic History in Maryland. Joe Faw, Deacon Paul Barksdale, Beverly White, and Denise Stanley were a wealth of information for their project. I just listened and enjoyed the history lesson. Later I met with our development director to discuss more plans for our Destined Under the Dome campaign. Shurdell English stopped in to review plans for St. Bernardine s in the event of an emergency or catastrophic event. Then word came that Radee Labeeb Prince had shot six people in Edgewood, MD, and Wilmington, DE, killing three of them. Thursday. I returned to St. Mary s Seminary & University to celebrate Alumni Day. I graduated 24 years ago and now serve on the Board of Trustees. We had graduates from 1951 among them, our own native son of St. Bernardine s, Msgr. Art Bastress, who is in his nineties (and as feisty as ever)! Afterwards, there was lots of paperwork to complete, among them writing this Pastor s Page. Friday.? Lots of people are surprised by the variety of things a priest does in any given day or week. Of course, we celebrate Mass most every day, visit the sick in the hospital, and counsel and comfort those in need. And, of course, I did all of that this week, too. But intermingled among all of that pastoral ministry are construction meetings, business conferences, and fun gatherings. I was inspired to write this catalog of activities after reading an email from a friend this week, who wrote that she had discovered on a new prayer that God seemed to be fond of: Lord, whatever happens today, don t let me miss the good parts! Amen! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TEAR-OFF SHEET FOR OCTOBER 22, 2017 Your Name: Full Address: Home Phone: Cell: E-mail address: ( ) I am a visitor ( ) Send me a registration form ( ) Please send me envelopes ( ) Please have Fr.
