SJC Honors Vets Nov 8 Veterans, parents, and all interested members and friends are invited to a special program of the SJC Religious School on Sunday, November 8, at 11:15, at SJC. We especially invite our members who are Veterans as our honored guests. If the Veterans wish, they may wear their military hats and/or uniforms to the program. As part of the program, our Gimmel Class students will educate us to the often-unheralded heroic contribution of Jews to the defense our country. Great stories of Jewish war heroes of all America s wars will be shared. This is an interactive program of song and presentations that attendants will long remember. If you have any questions please call Larry Koch at 302-335-8344. Annual Meeting Nov 15 SJC s annual membership meeting will be on Sunday, November 15, at 9 a.m., at SJC. Members should have already received the meeting agenda and a ballot for the board election. Elsewhere in this newsletter, the nominees discuss why they are interested in serving on the board. We urge everyone to mail their ballots before the meeting occurs. While ballots will be available at the meeting, it is extremely helpful if they are returned before the meeting, so we can be assured that we have a quorum. In accordance with our by-laws, the meeting cannot occur without a quorum of 15% of the membership, so it is vital to the continuance of SJC that members attend or send in absentee ballots. Only those members who are current in their dues or have made deferred payment arrangements with our Treasurer or Membership Committee chair are considered part of the quorum. Men s & Juliet Lunches Nov 12 & 18 Following a great success this spring, there will be men s and ladies (Juliet) luncheons this month. The SJC men will meet at the SJC parking lot at 11:30 on Thursday, November 12. From there, we will carpool to a place we select at that time. Some lunch suggestions are Semra s Mediterranean Grill, Nicolas for a Nic-o-boli, or Casa Amici. Whatever it is, we will have a lot of fun. Some of our plans had to change as we had a washout (literally, as it was really raining) on October 2 for Sukkot and Pizza in the Hut. Anyway, there is always next year. Overall, I thought the High Holy Day services were wonderful this year. They were inspirational and moving. It was especially nice to meet so many family members and friends of our congregants. I was happy to see so many new members and first time attendees. Services were very well attended from the beginning of the season to the end. So now we re back on our fall and winter schedule. While things are less hectic, there is plenty to do at SJC. The Adult Ed programs occur every Thursday. The schedule and description of each session is listed in this newsletter and we look forward to your participation. Soon I will be ending my second and final year as president. Recently I chaired my last SJC Board meeting. I m not done quite yet and am looking forward to the Annual Meeting. During the past two years we ve had rapid growth in our membership. SJC has been very successful because it is a welcoming congregation. We have an excellent base of volunteers who have helped maintain our programs and activities. Our congregants and friends have given us generous financial support. We ve been able to maintain a very low dues structure. When I leave this position in December I will make sure that the new Board and officers have the information and resources that they need to be successful. I look forward to the continued success and growth of Seaside. See you at the Annual Meeting. Committee Chairs Changing Two of our committees have new committee chairs. Cemetery Committee - Harvey Fruman is stepping down as chair of this committee. He did a great job of working with St. Peter s Episcopal Church in Lewes to establish and maintain the SJC Cemetery section. In just a few years, the existing SJC area is completely filled with reservations and internments. Ed Simon, SJC outgoing president, is taking over for Harvey as committee chair. Harvey will remain on the committee and help Ed secure additional grave sites. House Committee - David Kaplan has stepped down as chair of the House committee. As chair, Dave did an outstanding job in overseeing the maintenance of our building and grounds. He has always been responsive to our questions and needs. The new chair is Harvey Fruman, who has years of experience on the House Committee. We know that Harvey will do a great job. Thank you to Harvey and David for a job well done! Each position is for a three year term. Ballots were distributed by mail in mid-october. Please return them before the day of the meeting. Ballots will also be available at the meeting, but it will be extremely helpful if they are returned before the meeting. Eric Doroshow - I am a practicing Delaware lawyer and have been a member of Seaside for over 12 years. This Congregation has meant so much to my family and me. Being on the Board will give me an opportunity to give back. I hope to contribute to the work of the Board through the use of my legal training. I also believe that my prior service on the Board under the excellent tutelage of Past President Miriam Zadek will help a great deal in helping Seaside move forward. Buddy Feldman - I am pleased to be running for the Board. Marilyn and I have been Seaside members for 10 years, along with our children and grandchildren. I have participated in many worship services as a Torah reader. I am currently the Chairman of the Worship Committee which plans our worship services and special events such as the Passover Seder and The High Holiday Services. SJC has been a welcoming home for our family. I want to help SJC thrive as a spiritual, social and intellectual center for our community. David Udoff - Although I am relatively new member of Seaside (my wife Jennifer, daughter Julia, and I joined in 2013), it took my family and me almost no time to become valued members of the community. In the two years since we became members, in addition to enrolling our daughter in the religious school, I ve immersed myself in and gotten involved in many SJC activities. I helped build and take down the Sukkah for Sukkot. I carried the Torah during High Holy Day services. I am one of the managers of the Seaside Facebook page. I served on the SJC Social Committee, and volunteered at the community s annual Bingo and Brownies event, as well contributed during the various events put on by the Religious School. All the while, I ve formed warm, friendly relationships with just about everyone in the community, from SJC s president to its newest members. The warm, intimate, easygoing nature of the SJC community has inspired me more than ever to immerse myself back into Jewish life, and for that reason it would be an honor to extend that commitment by serving as a member of the Board. JFS Arrives in Sussex County We are so pleased to let you know that Jewish Family Services of Greater Delaware is opening a satellite office in eastern Sussex County in late January 2016. The new office will be located on Route 24 in the Creekside office building next door to Aqua Tech Physical Therapy and one block from Peddlers Village. Initial services to be offered will include outpatient behavioral health services, such as counseling for adults, families, couples, children, and adolescents. While anyone in Sussex County will be able to make use of the JFS counseling services, the focus will be on the Rehoboth, Lewes, Milton, Dewey, and Millsboro communities. Seaside and JFS have been working to make this happen for several years. The wait is over, and we at SJC are thrilled. We will keep the SJC community updated on the agency s progress during the next few months.
Page 4 Seaside Jewish Community November 2015 Talkfest Thursdays Meetings are at SJC at 7:30 p.m. All are invited. First Thursday: Jewish History On November 5, we will view and discuss a DVD presentation on Judges 8-21. We ll hear narratives about the continuing breakdown, ultimate failure, and societal consequences of the Israelites leadership during the era of Judges. These stories, which challenge what today we understand about Jewish values, tell of the awful fall from the magnificent heights of Moses and Joshua to the tragic lows of Samson, include heartbreaking tales about abysmal, deadly treatment of women, and conclude with this observation: every man did what was right in his own eyes. The DVD moderator asks us a telling question: Does the sacrifice of Jephthah s daughter provoke a reconsideration of the Akedah, the binding of Isaac? Then, on December 3, we enter the Bible s era of monarchs, recounted in the stories from Saul through Malachi. Second Thursday: A Taste of Mussar On November 12, we continue our exploration of the middah (virtue or characteristic or soul trait) of Faith and begin discussing the middah of Yirah, a Hebrew word that means both fear and awe. How do we encounter life, in fear, in awe, some of both? What does it mean to be fearful? Fearful of what? What does it mean to be in awe? Can we cultivate a sense of awe in our lives if it s not part of regular experience? Join us to discuss these questions, our own experiences and much more about the middah of Yirah. Then on December 10, we will review all the middot we ve studied over the past two years during this course and discuss a variety of spiritual practices in which participants have engaged during the course to learn what works well and not so well. The class is led by Beth Cohen. Each month, we explore one middah and look at practices that can be used to assist us as we work to incorporate these virtues into our way of being. You need not have participated in prior sessions to attend. Third Thursday: What Matters to Jews Third Thursday programming will resume in 2016. Due to the end of the year holiday schedule, in November and December, our usual Fourth Thursday discussion of Pirkei Avot will be on the third Thursday. Fourth Thursday: Pirkei Avot On November 19 and December 17, both third Thursdays, we continue our discussion of Pirkei Avot, a compilation of ethical teachings and maxims of the Mishnaic Period, which deals solely with ethical and moral principles. There is little or no Halacha (Jewish Law) in Pirkei Avot. This structure allows us to evaluate, compare, discuss, dissect, and reflect upon topics with an eye for when they were written down in the 2nd century CE and their relationship, if any, to the 21st century. All opinions are respected. In November, we will discuss the four character types and the four types of temperament. In December, we will discuss the four types of students and donors of chanty. What are they, how do they interact, and how do they affect us? What values do we see? No previous study is necessary or required. If possible, but not required, bring a Pirkei Avot book. Brecher Forum Succeeds SJC s October 11 Dorothy Brecher Forum on Social Justice in the Realm of Immigration Policy attracted 100 people, including people from the general community. The forum honored the memory of Dorothy, a widely admired Seaside member who was a passionate advocate for social justice. And the forum delivered a solid educational program on the Challenges to Finding Immigration Policies that are Humane, Just and Fair. Miriam Zadek, a past president of SJC who inspired the forum, gave insightful opening and closing remarks. SJC member Joan Churchill, a retired US Immigration Court Judge, moderated the discussion. Joan and her speakers addressed humanitarian aspects of U.S. immigration laws and policies; highly compatible basic Jewish and Catholic values (welcome the stranger; do unto others, etc.); social and pro bono legal services for Hispanic immigrants in Delaware; U.S. drug war policies that cause Central Americans to migrate to the U.S.; and immigration issues in Israel, specifically, and in the Middle East and Europe more broadly. Joan focused the audience on the key point that the challenges are found and they need to be worked out at the intersection of compassion and the rule of law in receiving countries. And Rebecca Kirzner, the speaker from HIAS, brought it all together: she said HIAS used to just help Jewish refugees settle in America; now it works with all immigrants worldwide, not because they are Jewish but because we are Jewish. Thanks go to all who organized and participated in the event and to those who attended.
November 2015 Seaside Jewish Community Page 5 Religious School News We had a busy month at the Religious School. On October 4, the students, along with many congregants, celebrated Sukkot, Simchat Torah, and Religious School Consecration. Beth Cohen led a beautiful service where everyone learned of the significance of the Lulav and Etrog, read the end and beginning of the Torah, and assisted as we rolled out the whole Torah around the sanctuary and then rerolled it. The kids loved seeing names and significant parts of the Torah. Four students were consecrated and welcomed into our community: Oliver and Charlotte Sachs and Mara and Quinn Lobley. The day ended with a delicious meal for all in attendance. On October 18, the Gimmel class and the teens visited the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC for the day. It was a profound experience for them as they learned more about the Holocaust and their connection as Jews and citizens of the world. Also, during October, the regular Religious School classes continued to meet and focus on their study of Hebrew, holidays, history, Israel, and culture. Religious School Library Please check out our newly reorganized School Library. We have relevant, beautifully illustrated books appropriate for preschoolers on up. The books are organized by topics: Hebrew, Bible Stories, Holidays, Shabbat, Chanukah, and Pesach. Newly purchased picture books include sensitively written books on the Holocaust, dealing with death, kindness and performing mitzvot. A convenient checkout form is placed above the library shelves. Just sign out the books and return them after you read them. We hope you will check them out for no more than three weeks at a time. Preschool Holiday Class Rocks! We are in the midst of our SJC holiday course for 3- and 4-year-olds and their parents. In September, the class learned about Shabbat. The children created their own challah covers, Shabbat candlesticks, and Kiddush cup. Of course, we tasted challah as we listened to stories! Then, in October, we explored the sanctuary, learning about the Ner Tamid (everlasting light), Aron Hakodesh (Torah Ark), the Torahs, and counting mezuzot. We made our own eternal light, a Torah complete with Yad (Torah pointer), and a mezuzah to hang on the doorpost of our homes. Our next class will concentrate on Chanukah. All are welcome to join the class at any time. The dates of the remaining classes are November 22, January 31, March 13, and April 10 from 10 to 11 a.m. at SJC. Food, Clothing, Toiletries Needed Please help us stock SJC s storeroom with non-perishable food, gently used coats and clothing, or new toiletries for the needy. So many in our area are in need. Bring these items with you when you come to SJC and put them in the wicker basket at the top of the stairs. The Community Service Committee will pick up your donated items and deliver them to local service organizations. Thank you and please help! Chanukah Party Dec 6 On Sunday, December 6, join us for a congregational Chanukah party, beginning at 11 a.m., sponsored by the Social and Youth Education Committees. The party is open to all, and there is no charge. You do not need to have children in the Religious School to attend. Our Religious School students will lead us in the signing of Chanukah songs and lighting the menorah, and there will be other Chanukah activities. We will have a holiday dairy lunch, followed by Chanukah games. A special art project will be created by the children. This will be a wonderful party and a great opportunity for all of us to share a great day. Please plan to attend, and please bring a new, unwrapped toy for a charity donation. This party was a great success last year, and everyone had a great time. Please plan to attend. SJC Resource Center The Adult Education Committee recommends the book Not in My Neighborhood by Antero Pietila, published by Ivan R. Dee. Racial segregation, affecting both African Americans and Jews, as referenced in neighborhood practices, is told through an examination of housing restrictions in Baltimore, MD. It details both the actions of neighborhood associations, builders, and those involved in redlining. It addresses private agreements which allowed such practices to continue. A fascinating read about a city just a short distance from Rehoboth and from which some our members have moved. This book is available through the Delaware Library System. Page 6 Seaside Jewish Community November 2015 Soup Kitchen Volunteers Needed SJC s Team 6 for the Sunday afternoon Soup Kitchen at Epworth United Methodist Church needs your help. Every six weeks, the SJC soup kitchen team shops, prepares, cooks, cleans, and serves those who come for a meal that Sunday. Shopping and preparation takes place on a day during the week prior to our given Sunday. Cooking and table set up begins at noon on our Sunday. Guests begin arriving at 2 p.m. The SJC team is cooking, serving, and cleaning until approximately 5 p.m. It takes 10 to 12 people to handle all the activities involved. Those interested in being in the kitchen for preparation and cooking are required to take a 2-hour on-line food preparation workshop before they can work in the kitchen. Anyone, including young people, can participate in the outside the kitchen activities of setting up, serving, and cleaning without the on-line training. November 2015 Seaside Jewish Community Page 7 Prayerbooks Go To Uganda This past summer, when our Religious Leader Beth Cohen was at a rabbinical school retreat, she met a new rabbinical student, a young man from the Abuyadaya Jewish Community in Busembatia, Uganda. Busembatia is a very rural area about 90 miles from Kampala, the Ugandan capital. Beth learned from the man that the group did not have any High Holy Day prayerbooks, and she offered to send them 100 of our older books as SJC had just purchased new ones. The Worship Committee agreed that we should spend the $600 dollars we thought it would cost to ship the books. Easier said than done. The post office said that the shipping cost would be well over $1,000. They also said there was a good chance the books wouldn t arrive or the Ugandan postal service would hold them hostage and demand money to hand them over. At the UPS store, the clerk told Beth that the packages would be guaranteed to arrive, as they would be delivered via UPS rather than through the local postal agency. However, it would cost over $3,000 to ship the books. Now here is the amazing part. During Beth s conversation with the UPS clerk, another customer said, Did you say you were trying to send these books to a community near Kampala? I live in Kampala. Perhaps I can help. Turns out, our angel works at the U.S. embassy in Kampala, and he was vacationing with his family in Rehoboth. He volunteered to receive our four boxes of books if someone from the Abuyadaya community could pick them up in Kampala. The cost to ship the 100 books to Dulles, where they would get on a government transport, was $150. Add another $200 for transportation from the village to Kampala to pick up the books, and the total cost to SJC was $350! As all this was transpiring in the UPS store, the clerk came out from behind the counter, put his arm around Beth and the embassy worker, and said, If this isn t Divine Intervention, then I don t know what is. The books arrived safely and were used for the High Holy Days by the Abuyadaya Jews of Uganda. They are most grateful, and we at SJC are grateful to our angel in the embassy for making this happen. SJC s 2016 Opening Dinner Continue your New Year s celebration with the annual SJC Opening dinner, this year on Saturday, January 2, 2016. We will be dining at Saketumi Restaurant on Coastal Highway in their second floor fully accessible private dining room. Cocktail hour starts at 6 p.m. with appetizers and bar drink (included in the price), followed by miso soup, choice of one of four entrees and cake and fruit for dessert. Diets start on Monday, January 4. Seating is limited for this extraordinary dinner, so get your reservations in early. See the flyer elsewhere in this newsletter for details. Wednesday Mornings at Seaside Every Wednesday morning from 9 to 10:30, you will find the SJC doors open for anyone interested in a contemplative, spiritual, peace-filled start to their day. Meditation, chant, and prayer are included. Everyone, including folks wanting to learn the practice of meditation, are welcome. SuCoat Drive Provides Warmth! The Sylvia Diehl SuCoat drive was a great success. The generosity of our congregants and friends was overwhelming. We collected over 95 cold weather items and delivered them to the Milford, DE, Multi-Cultural Community Center, where they were distributed to those in need. A heartfelt thanks to all who participated and to the Committee Services Committee for organizing this event.
