FEATURED ARTICLE The Understanding Of A Bedouin During a battle in Constantinople (Istanbul), Al-Mughirah ibn Abdur-Rahman ibn Ḥaarith ibn Hisham (may Allah have mercy on him) was injured in the eye. Al-Mughirah (may Allah have mercy on him) was a man who was known for his generosity, especially when it came to feeding his guests. It is related that a Bedouin came to him once and continued to stare at him without eating anything that was proffered to him. Al-Mughirah (may Allah have mercy on him) said, What is with you, Bedouin, that you do not eat as the people eat? He said, By Allah, I am indeed amazed at the abundance of food that you serve, but I have doubts about your eye. Al-Mughirah (may Allah have mercy on him) asked, And what makes you have doubts about it? He said, I see that you are oneeyed and that you feed others. And I have heard one who was describing Dajjal in a sermon in the mosque (that he is one-eyed). Al-Mughirah (may Allah have mercy on him) laughed and said, Eat, O Bedouin, for indeed the Dajjal will not be inflicted in his eye while he is fighting in the way of Allah! Disagreement Over Delicacies As a ruler and his wife were seated for dinner, they argued over which of two kinds of sweets was better and more delicious. On the same day, a famous judge came to meet the ruler, and he invited him immediately to join them in their meal. When the judge arrived, the ruler informed him about the difference of opinion between himself and his wife over the two kinds of sweets. He demanded of the judge to rule between them, and the judge playfully said, I cannot rule over that which is absent! so the servants hurried to present before him the two different kinds of sweets. Islamic Stories All the while the ruler and his wife were looking at him. When the judge finally finished after what seemed to be an endless amount of time, the ruler asked him which was better and more delicious. He said, O ruler! I have not seen anyone more eloquent in arguing a case than these two. Each time I intended to rule for one of them, the other came forth with his proofs and arguments. All those who were present laughed and the disagreement came to an end. The Poor Yemeni And Al-Ḥajjaaj Once Al-Ḥajjaaj ibn Yusuf went to Makkah to perform Umrah. He took along several bodyguards to protect him. After circumambulating the Ka bah, he came to the Maqaam Ibraheem (Station of Abraham) to perform two-units of prayer. As he stood to pray, his guards lay their swords, spears, lances and daggers onto the ground. Ṭaawoos ibn Kaesaan (may Allah have mercy on him), a learned scholar, narrates: While I was sitting near Maqaam Ibraheem, I heard some noise and clamor. I turned to look in that direction and saw Al-Ḥajjaaj ibn Yusuf and his guards. A poor man from Yemen, while going around the Ka bah, had passed by the Maqaam Ibraheem, where Ḥajjaaj, who had finished his prayer, was sitting. The poor Yemeni did not know that Ḥajjaaj was sitting there. As he passed by, a spear had caught his dress and fell on Ḥajjaaj. Ḥajjaj was terrified and ordered his guards to seize and bring the man to him. The guards rushed and seize him, they brought him before Ḥajjaaj. Ḥajjaaj asked the Yemeni man, Do you know me? The Yemeni man answered, No. Ḥajjaaj asked, Who is the governor of Yemen? The Yemeni man answered, Muḥammad ibn Yusuf, the brother of Ḥajjaaj. He is as cruel as Ḥajjaaj or even worse. Ḥajjaaj said, Don t you know I am his brother? The Yemeni asked, Are you Ḥajjaaj? Ḥajjaaj answered, Yes. The Yemeni remarked, Oh, how bad you and your brother are! the House of Allah, and the poor man from Yemen fearing no-one except Allah, resumed circumambulating the Ka bah The Sin That Led To His Repentance A righteous man was once asked to tell the story of the pivotal moment of his life, the moment in which he first began to apply the teachings of Islam, and the following was his answer: When I was a young man, I would not hesitate to perpetrate any sin that was made available to me. Then, one day, I saw a young woman who was perhaps the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. Much tempted by her, I indicated to her that I wanted her to approach me. She seemed nervous, but I thought that she would probably agree to satisfy my sexual desires for money. She approached me with what seemed to be a great deal of apprehension, and when she actually stood before me, she looked extremely terrified. Feeling sorry for her, I said, Do not fear, for I will not harm you. But my words did not lessen her terrible fright in the least; in fact, her situation worsened. She began to tremble like a palm tree leaf trembles with the wind. I said, Tell me your story. She said, By Allah, o my brother, never before this day have I offered my body in this way. Dire need is what has driven me to this, for I have three daughters who have not eaten a single morsel of food for three days now. It was pity for them that brought me to this low point in my life. For the first time in my life, I felt pity; her story moved me, and I no longer entertained the intention of taking advantage of her. After she told me where she lived, I took a great deal of money, clothing and food to her house. When I returned to my house, I told my mother what had happened. The judge extended his hand and ate from the sweet that the ruler loved more, and then he said, A beautiful and delicious kind of sweet, and all praise is for Allah, Who has made it sweet. Then he went to the other sweet, which the wife of the ruler loved more. He began to eat from it and he said, A beautiful and delicious kind of sweet, and all praise is for Allah, Who has blessed us to taste it. He continued to eat, from one kind and then from the other, until he could eat no more. 4 Ḥajjaaj inquired, How was my brother when you left Yemen? The Yemeni said, He has a big paunch from excessive eating. Fat like a buffalo. Ḥajjaaj said, I didn t ask you about his health. I asked you about the way he dispenses justice. The Yemeni countered, Oh, how can he be fair and just? He is cruel and robs others of their wealth. Ḥajjaaj asked, Don t you know he is my brother? Don t you fear me? The Yemeni replied, Do you think your brother, by virtue of his relation with you, has become more honourable? I beg Allah for honour. Ṭaawoos (may Allah have mercy on him) the narrator of this episode said, I shuddered with fear when I saw the way the Yemeni spoke to Ḥajjaaj. My mother knew that I had a book in which I would record all of my evil deeds, and so she said to me, My son, you are a man who has never performed a good deed except for the good deed that you performed today. I know that you have a book in which you record your evil exploits, go now and write in it your good deed. I stood up, went to my book, opened it, and found that all of its pages were blank- except for the first page on which was written a single line....indeed, good deeds remove the evil deeds... Surat al-hud [11:114] At that very moment, I raised my hands to the sky and said, By your Might and Majesty, never again will I disobey You.
