Beginning Apologetics The End Times Purgatory III/Indulgences November 15, 2009 Learn to explain our faith clearly, to defend it charitably, and to share it confidently. 1 Peter 3:15: Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope. I. Review of Purgatory So Far (REMEMBER TO PRAY FOR THE INDULGENCE FOR STUDYING THE FAITH!!!) A. Catholic doctrine regarding Purgatory 1. Purgatory is a temporary state of purification for the imperfect saints a) Purgatory fully cleanses souls which have died in a state of grace, but with remaining venial sins or reparations sue, so that they may enter Heaven b) All remaining reparations for sin are made in purgatory c) All remaining self-love or selfishness is purified until only the love of God remains 2. REMEMBER: a) Only the imperfect saints in the state of grace enter Purgatory. NOT a 2 nd chance for those with mortal sin b) Purgatory purposes: Purification and Reparation. The *effects* of sin are purged. The *punishments* due to sin are paid c) Purgatory is only temporary. Once a soul is purified, it will enter heaven. EVERYONE in Purgatory will go to heaven. Purgatory ceases to exist at The Second Coming; only heaven and hell are eternal. B. Is Purgatory Scriptural?

1. In the strict sense, the WORD Purgatory is not found in the Bible; the WORDS Trinity, and Incarnation aren t EITHER; that s not the point. The DOCTRINES are. 2. Well Matt 12:32 Jesus implies that some sins can be forgiven in the next world (the age to come). 3. 1 Corinthians 3:15: CAN T refer to hell; no salvation. CAN T refer to heaven; NO SUFFERING. Therefore, it must refer to a MIDDLE state (suffering temporary loss to gain heaven). 4. 1 Peter 3:18-20/1 Peter 4:6: Disobedient spirits who were saved when Jesus Preached to them, CAN T be in hell (no salvation!), and CAN T be with the *righteous* (like David and Abraham they weren t disobedient!). a) At MINIMUM, these verses show a THIRD place existing between heaven and hell. b) At BEST, they prove the Catholic doctrine of Purgatory. 5. The BEST Scripture reference comes from the Septuagint. a) Question from first class: What s the Septuagint? (1) The Septuagint is the version of the Old Testament that would have been in use in the time of Christ. (2) The Councils of Hippo (AD 393) and Carthage (AD 397) officially determined which books would comprise the Bible; They chose the Septuagint! b) 2 Maccabees 12:42-46 (read it out loud) (1) Text: 42 Turning to supplication, they prayed that the sinful deed might be fully blotted out. The noble Judas warned the soldiers to keep themselves free from sin, for they had seen with their own eyes what had happened because of the sin of those who had fallen. 43 He then took up a collection among all his soldiers, amounting to two thousand silver drachmas, which he sent to Jerusalem to provide for an expiatory sacrifice. In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection of the dead in view; 44 for if he were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death. 45 But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. 46 Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin.

(2) First, it proves a distinction between venial and mortal sin. The men sinned by wearing amulets of foreign gods, but they died in godliness. Therefore their sins had to be venial. (3) Second, it proves the existence of a middle state where venial sins can be forgiven. Souls in heaven need no aid; souls in hell have no hope. Praying for the dead assumes a middle state between the two. (4) All of this makes 2 Macc 12:42-46 a proof text for Purgatory. c) So how do we know what books really belong in the Bible? And by whose authority do we trust that the books are inspired? The choice is Luther or the Church! d) Even if you reject 1/2 Macc as inspired they still accurately reflect the religious character of 2d Century BC Jews. ~ One hundred years Before Christ s birth, Jews prayed for their dead (and still do today). e) Earliest Christian liturgies include prayers for the dead (our Eucharistic Prayers are modeled on them). Tertullian wrote (AD 211) about prayers for the dead on their birthdays II. Purgatory Conclusion A. What s Purgatory Like? 1. Two works that give us a glimpse of Purgatory are: a) Treatise on Purgatory (or, Purgation and Purgatory), By St. Catherine of Genoa (1447-1510) b) St. Catherine was given deep knowledge of Purgatory by Christ, and experienced its sufferings on earth for several years. c) Dark Night of the Soul, by St. John of the Cross (1542 1591) d) John of the Cross discusses the purifications a soul must endure to reach spiritual perfection 2. What s the state of souls in Purgatory? a) In a state of grace; assured of going to heaven.

b) Without sin/incapable of sinning; totally free of the guilt of sin; only the remaining punishment due for sin is taken to Purgatory c) Souls in Purgatory are saints; at death, they get a glimpse of the heaven they will enter. 3. What is Purgatory like? a) A place of stillness; a place of twilight. b) Without bodies, souls have no distractions; no temptations in any way; no worries about death or judgment; no earthly cares (family/job) c) No worries of any kind except removing remaining punishment for sin. 4. Twilight (not the book!) a) Review the book description of twilight (praying in early morning without distraction; focusing completely on God; dim, but a glimpse of the light is there anticipating the sunrise) b) Souls in Purgatory are in darkness (suffering) because of obstacles (punishment due to sin) tht block the sunlight (the Beatific Vision); yet God manifests His love for them (predawn light) 5. St. Catherine teaches: a) Souls in Purgatory suffer much, but in peace and joy; they have gained salvation and love God perfectly/know His love for them! b) The chief suffering of Purgatory: souls yearn to be with God, and suffer because they cannot yet! c) St. Teresa of Avila: I die because I don t die! (saw a glimpse of heaven; flooded with peace and joy, but suffered from the separation) 6. Example of the cancer patients a) Patient Y has an incurable cancer the burns like fire; no hope of a cure; suffering will just continue until death b) Patient Z has a treatable/curable cancer, and the treatment will hurt as much as Patient Y s.

c) Patient Y is like the souls in hell, who suffer with no healing purpose, and with no hope of a cure. d) Patient Z is like the souls in purgatory, who suffer knowing that it is perfecting them and that the pain will end. 7. In sum: a) Common misconception that souls in Purgatory are desperately trying to get to heaven, but that God drags them into Purgatory. WRONG! Purgatory is a mercy, and souls go willingly! b) When we die in a state of Grace, but needing further purification, we KNOW we can t enter heaven due to our OWN FREE WILL. c) We understand that God has provided a place to complete our purification, and we SKIP into Purgatory! d) Pains aof Purgatory are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from the sufferings of hell; purgatory is NOT a temporary hell. e) Hell is hopeless; people in Purgatory are SAINTS. B. How do we avoid Purgatory? 1. FIRST: DON T CONFUSE THIS WITH EARNING OUR WAY TO SALVATION. IT AIN T! 2. Aim High! It isn t hard to completely avoid Purgatory! 3. Avoid the extremes a) Don t despair cuz we aren t Mother Teresa or John Paul II, and assume a long stint in Purgatory. b) Don t be PRESUMPTUOUS either; None of us is too special to God to be allowed to suffer through our own choices 4. Try the following: a) Daily Prayer: Ask for the grace! God answers persistent prayer b) Frequent Confession: Regular confession actually helps in avoiding sin! c) Frequent Mass and Holy Communion: One of the effects of the Eucharist is the remission of temporal punishment due to sin.

d) Regular penance: not what s imposed by the priest in Reconciliation; extra ones (fasting, abstinence, Lenten-like observances) e) Daily rosary: One of the Fifteen Promises of Our Lady to St. Dominic was the deliverance from Purgatory for those devoted to the Rosary f) Offering up our death and its circumstances entirely to God g) Offering up daily crosses h) Sacrament of Anointing: Helps us endure illness in union with Christ, AND it takes away the temporal punishment of sin (by linking the suffering of the illness with an awareness of the temporal punishment due to sin) i) INDULGENCES III. Gee, Deacon Chip what s an Indulgence? A. Definition (CCC 1471): 1. "An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints." 2. The power to do this stems from the power to forgive sins (see John 20:22-23: 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the holy Spirit. 23 Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.") 3. Indulgences are partial or plenary a) Partial indulgence removes part of the punishment due to sin. b) Plenary Indulgence removes ALL of the punishment due for sin. 4. We can gain indulgences for ourselves, or for the dead, but not for others who are living.

B. Sin has a Double Consequence (cf. CCC 1472) 1. Grave sin breaks our communion with God and deprives us of communion with God, and we are INCAPABLE OF ETERNAL LIFE. Losing eternal life is *eternal punishment*. 2. EVERY sin (even venial) includes an unhealthy attachment to creatures (self) which must be purified before seeing God. Happens either here on earth, or after death in Purgatory; this is *temporal punishment*. 3. These two punishments ARE NOT God s vengeance; they follow from the nature of sin, and are incurred through OUR CHOICE. 4. It is possible to achieve the purification of sin while alive (fervent charity) so that no punishment remains C. How do we defend Indulgences 1. Resist a knee-jerk reaction to their knee-jerk reaction AGAINST indulgences (remember Luther and Tetzel). Just look objectively! The real issue is FORGIVENESS OF SINS. 2. Jesus gave his Church the power to forgive sins a) (see Matthew 18:18 ( Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. ) / b) John 20:23 (above)); c) Why is this power only limited to the GUILT of sin, and not include the PUNISHMENT due to sin? 3. Jesus gave the Church the authority to bind and loose. What Biblical reason is there to limit that power to guilt ONLY? If the Church has the GREATER power (removing guilt), why would it not have the LESSER power (to remit punishment)? D. How do we gain a partial indulgence? 1. First, be baptized, in the state of grace (no mortal sins unconfessed), and not excommunicated

2. Then there are three ordinary ways: a) Saying a short prayer in the midst of our daily duties, like: (1) The sign of the Cross (2) Morning Offering (3) Act of Contrition (4) Act of Faith (5) Act of Hope (6) Act of Love (7) Guardian Angel Prayer (8) Anima Christi (9) Apostle s Creed (10) Litany of the Sacred Heart (11) Litany of the Blessed Virgin (12) Memorare (13) Any vocations prayer (14) Five decades of the Rosary b) Performing a direct act of charity (performing any of the spiritual or corporal works of mercy) c) Abstaining from some permissible good (as one woul during Lent) 3. One can also gain a partial indulgence for: a) Visiting the Blessed Sacrament for any length of time; b) Visiting a cemetery and praying for souls in Purgatory; c) Devoutly wearing/displaying a crucifix/rosary/scapular/holy medal d) Teaching or studying Catholic doctrine for any length of time (you re welcome).

4. IMPORTANT: one must EXPRESS THE INTENT TO GAIN THE INDULGENCE in order to receive it! E. How do we gain a Plenary Indulgence? 1. First, be baptized, in the state of grace (no mortal sins unconfessed), and not excommunicated 2. ALSO, must be free of any ATTACHMENT to sin (truly struggling against anything we know is sinful in our lives) 3. Four ordinary ways: a) Spending 30 minutes before the Blessed Sacrament b) Spending 30 minutes reading Sacred Scripture for devotional purposes c) Making the Stations of the Cross d) Saying a public rosary (in a religious group, in a family, or if alone, in a church aloud or at least in a whisper) e) THEN, one must receive communion, and pray for the intentions of the Pope, AND go to Confession within 20 days before or after. 4. AND YOU HAVE TO INTEND TO DO IT!
