Page 3 From Fr. Faucher The Gospel for today and in the weeks to come is about parables. Jesus spoke often in parables, and about 40 of them, probably the ones he used the most, are preserved. A parable is defined by Wikipedia as: a succinct, didactic story in prose or verse which illustrates one or more instructive lessons or principals. It differs from a fable in that fables employ animals, plants, inanimate objects, or forces of nature as characters, whereas parables have human characters. Matthew reminds his Jewish readers of the prophet Isaiah and his prophecy about understanding the message of God. Isaiah says that only those who open their hearts can truly hear the Lord. Both this week and next week the parables are about sowing seeds and farming the land. For the people who heard these parables, they made perfect sense. It was their world. For most of us, the parable makes sense and we can understand it intellectually, but not emotionally. That is where the request of the apostles asking Jesus to explain the parables, helps us a great deal. For us, the explanation of a farming parable is usually more powerful than the parable itself. That is not true in some of the other non-farming parables. The first reading picks up this sowing of the seed theme, and Paul continues his trip through Romans. Next week s Gospel is a lot like this week s Gospel, so I will take that time to look at Paul and the Letter to the Romans. Fr. Estos religiosos le tenían una gran devoción a la Santísima Virgen y le construyeron un templo en ese lugar. A Chile llegó esta devoción en 1680, traída por los misioneros agustinos. Her name comes from the Carmel Mount, in the Holy Land. To this mount the prophet Elijah retired to pray. Many centuries ago, several monks gathered to pray and do penance. People called them "carmelites." Those brothers had a deep devotion to the Holy Virgin and built her a temple on the beautiful mountain. 100 Year Anniversary of Fatima! St. John's in Boise and St. Paul's in Nampa will host a speaker, Francis Slobodnik, from the National America Needs Fatima Foundation in Kansas. A 2-part presentation will begin Wed. July 19, at 7pm, at St. John's Cathedral Riffle Center. The first presentation will cover the story and facts of the visitation of heaven to the three children of Fatima. The second presentation will be on Thur. July 20, at 7pm, at Paul's Church in Nampa, in the meeting room. Both presentations will last one hour. All are welcome to either one or both of them. The Onati Dancers will perform in honor of St. Ignatius Loyola before Mass with a procession and dancing at 6:40pm and after Mass at the base of the Cathedral steps. During the Consecration the dancers will perform a dance dating to the 16th century in honor of the Body and Blood of Christ.
