TEMPLE BETH ISRAEL BULLETIN PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Among the major highlights were: the installation of our new Rabbi, Stephen Sniderman; the addition of Isaac Azerad as our Executive Director; the series of Shabbat Dinners, which provided opportunities for fellowship, in addition to delicious food; our Scholar in Residence and Kallah Scholar weekends; the celebration of Rabbi Michael Eisenstat s fiftieth year in the Rabbinate; our 92Y series; our annual Gala dinner; our annual Passover Seder; and the many programs and events sponsored by the BIW and the Men s Club. I think that many of you would agree that a major highlight of the season was the recent Florence Katz Memorial Choir Concert. Led by our outstanding and very talented choir director, Ann Stephenson-Moe, the concert attracted over 240 attendees who were treated to an outstanding evening of Jewish, popular and operatic music. Presented in tandem with a fund raising campaign, a total of over $18,000 was raised to help support the TBI Choir in the coming year. As we look forward to the new fiscal year, which begins on June 1, I want to express my thanks and appreciation to all those who helped make the current year a success. This, of course, includes my fellow officers, the members of the Board of Trustees, the leaders of our auxiliary organizations, the Rabbi and staff, and all of the volunteers who contributed their time and efforts. I look forward to working with our new slate of officers and board members in the coming year. We will be dedicated to taking steps to ensure a stable financial condition for the congregation s future, expanding the size of our membership roll and to providing a full agenda of interesting and enjoyable programs. My best wishes to all for a happy & healthy summer. As we approach the end of the 2016/2017 season, it is a good time to reflect on some of the highlights and some of our accomplishments over the past ten months. MAY 2017 FROM THE RABBI S STUDY I hope you are reading the weekly E-blasts that the Temple office sends out with news about services and other activities. I am tossing around the idea of sending out an additional communication: a weekly letter with educational or editorial comments about relevant topics. This is one way I can keep in touch with those of you who go away for the summer. In my previous congregation, I sent out a weekly Shabbat Update that was essentially a review and analysis of the Torah portion. I don t exclude the possibility of an occasional Torah commentary, but I want to go beyond that. For Rabbis the summer can be a time for a little rest and a lot of reflection. It is a time when we organize those thoughts that end up in High Holiday sermons. Perhaps I could share some of that process with you as it develops. The Tuesday afternoon Hebrew class took on a life and identity of its own. Enthusiastic students asked good questions and got us off topic too often. We will pick up with the Hebrew language part of the Hebrew class in the fall. Over the summer I would enjoy continuing our conversation group. In the fall, I hope to do both: strictly Hebrew language and then open discussion. We will coordinate time for these two sessions. It is almost a year since I first came to Longboat Key exploring the possibility of serving your congregation. I remember phoning Corinne and Spencer reporting to them that Longboat Key is very warm with lots of water. The warmth doesn t just refer to the temperature. Let me thank you again for letting us make your spiritual home our spiritual home. For those of you who are going up north, let us stay in touch over the summer. May it be a happy and healthy summer! TEMPLE BETH ISRAEL BULLETIN FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR S DESK As our busy season draws to an end, Sandy Packard, our able editor and her team, are wrapping up this year s final issue of the Temple Bulletin. You are now holding in your hands the culmination of that collective effort. I can almost hear a sigh of relief from all who are involved. After the many efforts it takes to produce month after month this elaborate publication, our team can now look forward to this hiatus. Many have contributed to its success by writing the articles and soliciting the ads necessary to keep the Bulletin solvent. Two individuals have secured the financial support by selling advertising to our vendors; we salute Barbara Pressman and Allan Goldfarb who have agreed to continue in that capacity next year. The Bulletin and the Directory carry a potential for growth and enlisting additional advertisers which can increase revenue significantly. If you d like to be part of this success story call Allan Goldfarb or Isaac Azerad and volunteer to join the team. We have enjoyed rich and rewarding programs and events in the last few months. In addition to our Miniversity and 92Y programs, our delicious dinners and our concerts, we partnered with the Jazz Club of Sarasota and the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee to bring you a Jazz Concert, Violins of Hope and a Jewish Film Festival movie. We are now starting to fill our calendar with next year s programs and events. Following the recent success of our Florence Katz Memorial Choir Concert, we plan on repeating this enjoyable evening next year. We are looking to partner with the Jazz Club to bring you a Klezmer Concert. We are exploring additional programs in conjunction with other organizations. We will keep you informed as soon as plans materialize. Another milestone this season was to establish a Life and Legacy program under the auspices of the Grinspoon Foundation and managed by our Jewish Federation. We have already registered substantial legacies and we are off to a good start. This program is necessary to ensure that our work continues well into the future. We have started to formulate a security plan to ensure that our congregation is free from harm. We live in a relatively safe environment and although there is no known danger at this moment, it is important to have a plan in place in case of weather related or other emergencies. Summer time is a time to think, plan and improve. I urge all who want to get involved to call me or write me. Or better yet, stop by my office and we can chat. MAY 2017 IN MEMORY & HONOR OF KATHY BROOKS How difficult it is to speak about a person you have spent many hours with as a Temple Board Member and close friend having similar thoughts and passions for the good of a project that is deep in our hearts and thoughts for the future of the Temple. This Temple gave her a house of worship to actively practice her faith and provided her an opportunity to make a difference. Not only did Kathy Brooks and I share our work for this, our spiritual home, for me, she was also a good friend. Kathy was dedicated to our Temple and its needs, its welfare, and her devotion to Judaism and this congregation was an inspiration for all of us. As a Vice President and then a President of our congregation, Kathy was tireless in helping any congregant who had a problem or a complaint by using her poise, patience and gentle manner to smooth over any ruffled feathers and attempt to resolve the issue at hand. She took it upon herself to accomplish each feat with steadfast determination and a lovely smile. It was not unusual for her to host dinners at her home for twelve or more because an invited dignitary or guest scholar was the prominent speaker at the Temple that evening. I will fondly remember Kathy giving the State of the Temple address on Yom Kippur morning and reporting to the congregation at the Annual Meeting or standing for twenty minutes in high heels holding a Torah on Kol Nidre. TEMPLE BETH ISRAEL BULLETIN BETH ISRAEL WOMEN PRESIDENT S LETTER The Florence Katz Memorial Concert: March 29, 2017 was a magical night at Temple Beth Israel. On that evening the Beth Israel Women and the Men s Club co-sponsored the Florence Katz Memorial Concert. The Concert was an unusual one in many ways. It was a tribute to Florence Katz and also to the Temple Beth Israel Choir. It was the first time the Beth Israel Women and the Men s Club collaboratively worked together. A committee of Isaac Azerad, Ann Stephenson-Moe, Lewis Moyer, Stuart Sinai, Irv Parmet, and Barbara Siegel was formed and met multiple times to carefully arrange the details of the event. Sylvia Pastor was an ancillary member who provided her usual brilliant creativity and catering ideas. As the weeks went on, and the many ideas began to come together, we all became more excited. Ann Stephenson-Moe s creativity, generosity and musical contacts combined with the Temple s own wonderful choir to present a group of very talented musicians. As we heard them rehearse, we all knew the concert would be a success. By March 29, over 200 tickets and many sponsorships had been purchased. The subtitle of the concert was L Dor Va Dor, Generation to Generation. It was a perfect sub-theme for a concert remembering the bright, tiny woman who started the music program at Temple Beth Israel so many years ago. The program for the concert arranged and accompanied by Ann could not have been better. She is truly the next generation of another bright, tiny woman who now continues the music program at Beth Israel. The soloists, the choir and the instrumentalists all made for an evening which had the audience standing, clapping and shouting, Bravos. Judy & Bob Vigder, Florence Katz daughter and son-in-law could not have been more thrilled! Surely we will all await The Second Annual Florence Katz Concert next year. Game Day: BIW ended March with our first Game Day in many years! Despite the busy schedule at the end of the season, 46 women and 1 man attended to play Bridge, Mah-Jong and Canasta. A lovely lunch of egg salad and tuna sandwiches on sliders accompanied by a beautiful salad, three different noodle kugels and lots of delicious cookies and brownies was provided. The Gift Shop was visited by many for purchases of Passover candy and other miscellaneous items. Sheila Zinder proficiently held a Mah-Jong lesson for new players and she and Sylvia prepared most of the lunch. Many of our members prepared cookies for the concert and the luncheon and helped in too many ways to mention. Thank you to Lynn Burton, Roz Fleischer, Bonney Libman, Ruth Engman, Shelley Goldberg, and Amy Roth. All of the players loved the afternoon and said they would like us to repeat it next year. So we will. We will try a winter Game Day and if possible repeat it in the spring. TEMPLE BETH ISRAEL BULLETIN MEN S CLUB I want to express our thanks once again to the BIW Women for their great partnership in co-sponsoring the Florence Katz Memorial Concert with the Men s Club. A special thanks to BIW President Barbara Siegel for her leadership and collaboration. We look forward to working with Barbara and the members of BIW next year. In addition, many thanks to Ann Stephenson-Moe and her choir group for a magnificent performance that was greatly appreciated by all in attendance. The last event of the current season was the Men s Club Barbeque. Some 40 plus people attended and enjoyed the fine cooking of Temple members. They also enjoyed the fine music of our guitar player. We are hard at work planning next year s functions which will include the West Coast Black Theater Group and our own choir, as well as many guest speakers at our breakfast meetings. All in all we have had a very good year and are now looking forward to next year. MAY 2017 SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE The Turning Points facility in Bradenton, which we are supporting with varied contributions of clothes and toiletries, was very thankful for our donations. A few weeks ago Pat Kaplan and I delivered 15 large bags of items, and many smaller bags, which our congregation has so generously supplied. The gentleman who helped us offload the bags said Shalom and gave us a huge Thank You. It s wonderful to see that the boxes are filling up again. We will continue to deliver during the summer months. A retired physician, who is a new member in our Temple, suggested that we organize a cadre of TBI doctors who might offer their medical services to Turning Points on a rotating basis. As of now they have a PA and sometimes a doctor who will provide health care to the Turning Points registrants on occasional days. If you are interested in this most worthy idea, please call or contact me (941-383-4899) or (namablue@comcast.net). This would be a wonderful contribution to the needy among us. JoAnn Goldwater, Pat Kaplan and I met with the Town Planning committee to discuss our Benches Project. We learned that there are many plans for Gulf of Mexico Drive in the upcoming months. Our benches ideas - perhaps starting with covered seating at the Key Club bus stop - is being considered. Some of us may be asked to attend a meeting with the Planning Committee and the DOT. We will be patient while plans evolve. We have a contact who will keep us updated. Happy, healthy summer to all! TEMPLE BETH ISRAEL BULLETIN BETH ISRAEL BIO: Shirley Fein Everybody is always bestowing honors and awards on this lady. Her latest is from the Jewish Housing Counsel. And you know why? Because she is hard working, smart, charming, hilariously funny, and always has a twinkle in her eye. Born to Samuel and Pauline Polinsky, (he s from somewhere in Poland and she s from Odessa), Shirley Fein grew up on her father s farm in Jewett City, Connecticut surrounded by farm animals and her three brothers. Growing up on a farm in a small town didn t exactly fit the woman who describes herself aptly as a people person. She also might have described herself as brave and adventurous. Shirley and her husband, Arnold, traveled extensively throughout the world. She has seen the Komodo dragons in southeastern Indonesia, as well as the Treetops Hotel in Kenya, Africa, where Princess Elizabeth was when her father died and she became Queen Elizabeth. During one trip to New Guinea, she and Arnold found themselves in the middle of some sort of uprising and had been told that the natives were very hungry. Knowing the natives were still cannibals, Arnold made a quick decision to reach deep into his pockets to hire and bribe a pilot with a puddle jumper, rubber band running, propeller plane to get them out of there fast! After all, he surely did not want to end up in a huge black pot as the human hock for soup. So off they flew to the safety of Australia. Yes, Arnold knew immediately that Shirley was the girl for him. After a game of golf at the Berkshire Country Club in New York, Arnold met perky Shirley. He then tracked her down the following week to her place of employment. Petite Baby Wear, can I help you? Shirley asked as she answered the phone. And that is all smooth Arnold needed: marriage and their wonderful daughter, Tina. Time passed and our Shirley was busy as ever. She was the President of the National Council of Jewish Women, and as a result was invited to the White House for tea with Lady Bird Johnson. When daughter Tina was about to get married, Shirley decided she wanted to go to college, something she had never done before. So in 1982 our Shirley graduated with honors from a Jesuit Catholic University in which she became a member of the Theta Alpha Kappa Honor Society. Not surprisingly, she had studied Humanities and Comparative Religions, even bringing a busload of her fellow students, (mostly Catholic and far younger than she) to her shul for a program. In 1972, Shirley and Arnold first came to Sarasota. Ten years later they built a house on the North end of Longboat. In 1989 she moved to Viscaya, and now lives at and enjoys The Sarasota Bay Club. Is our Shirley now just quietly sitting around? She works for the Jewish Family Service Senior Outreach Program. MAY 2017 is cooking and serving meals to seniors and joining with them in activities and social programs. I give these folks the gift of respect and dignity., she said. And I thought, wow, what a woman! Suzanne Schuster Beth Israel Bio Editor PASSOVER TBI members and their guests enjoyed a delightful evening on Monday, April 10 in our social hall at our annual Seder. One hundred fifteen adults and children read the Haggadah with Rabbi Sniderman and consumed a most awesome menu catered by Michael s on East. The Haggadah, which was created by Rabbi Michael Eisenstat some years ago, is unique. Rabbi Sniderman conducted a musical service with Ann Stephenson Moe at the piano and Becca Hill who sang traditional prayers and songs. The room looked beautiful with multi-colored tulips and beautiful table settings. The attendees seemed so pleased to share this special event with their friends and family. TEMPLE BETH ISRAEL BULLETIN SHABBAT DINNERS TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE SUMMER Our monthly Shabbat Dinners have been very well attended and enjoyed by all. We will continue these dinners the first Friday of each month over the summer. Our next Shabbat Dinner will be held on Friday, May 5th at 6 p.m. in celebration of Cinco de Mayo. The evening will feature Spanish and Mexican cuisine. The cost for members is $25 pp and for guests $30.00 pp. Please make your reservations with the office by May 1. For the months of June, July and August, Shabbat Dinners will be served following the Friday evening service (summer Friday services begin at 5:30 p.m.). Costs will continue to be $25 for members and $30 for guests. Reservations will be required. Please call TBI office to make your reservations. The Israeli Shabbat Dinner on Friday April 7 was a unique experience. Deviating from the usual, we had a sit-down, family style meal starting with a variety of Israeli salads, followed by chicken, beef kabobs and a sumptuous rice dish. The Oneg featured baklava and other Middle Eastern pastries. Our newest caterer for this season, Liora Bruck, originates from Israel and is anxious to break into the catering business in this area. Judging from our experience she will be a total success. Have a great summer. Hasta la vista to our snowbirds! The cost of each plaque is $500 and includes the full name of the departed along with the secular and Hebrew dates underneath it. Plaques are placed in proximity to relatives if space is available. We are delighted to report that from June 1, 2016 to April 1, 2017, sixty-one people joined as new members. Although 47 members passed away, moved to senior housing facilities, or resigned, we have a net gain of 14 new people. Special thanks to all our congregants for helping us to sustain a precious Jewish presence on Longboat Key! Yes, the flowers are blooming and spring is in the air. Many of our Temple members are returning to their northern residences to enjoy a delightful summer. Some members are busy with the planning and preparation for next season s High Holy Days celebration. This year Rosh Hashanah begins on Wednesday evening, September 20 and ends on Friday evening, September 22 (for those who observe Rosh Hashanah for two days). Yom Kippur begins on Friday, September 29 and ends on Saturday evening, September 30. Our Co-chairs for the holidays are Elise Galinsky and Ruth Engman. They will be sending a letter and form to all congregants in June, requesting a response from any person who would like to receive an honor during the High Holy Days services. These include opening and closing the ark, carrying a Torah, having an Aliyah, doing an English reading from the prayer book, being an usher, etc. Please choose an appropriate and comfortable honor, complete the form when it arrives at your home and return it no later than July 15th. During the Holy Day Services, you will be graciously honored and your Mitzvah will be shared by all those present during the service. TEMPLE BETH ISRAEL BULLETIN BEYOND THE BIMAH: Karen & Robert Gary Members Personal Stories in Choosing TBI Karen & Robert Gary moved to Longboat Key in 2005, though Karen was still commuting between Longboat and Ohio until 2008 for her work as a school psychologist. They are currently members of two temples with which they have a long time association with Ohio. In August of 2016, they made TBI their third affiliation! What was behind their decision, after 11 years of being residents of Longboat Key, to take the step and become members? The answer is wrapped up in several reasons. Robert felt a connection to TBI s new Rabbi, Stephen Sniderman. The same rabbi who had overseen Robert s own Bar Mitzvah had worked with Rabbi Sniderman. The Garys both have many life long friends that live on Longboat and who are also members of TBI. They finally recognized for themselves - especially as they began to spend more and more Jewish holidays here on Longboat - that they had to decide to join. Not belonging was an even bigger statement than belonging. Karen leads a full and active life on Longboat. However, she felt a link was missing to fulfill her yearning to stay connected to the Jewish cycle of events. The religious and cultural engagement and exploration draw her in. She strongly identifies to Judaism. In fact, the more she studies and learns about spirituality and other religions in the world through her own life experiences, she feels Judaism offers all she needs. Robert grew up in a tight community of 300 Jewish families in Lorain, Ohio. He similarly feels a sense of accountability to support the local Jewish community. Back home his father backed their small synagogue, which needed to have participation or else it would not survive. Without such commitment, he knows the community would have drifted. Another compelling link for Robert to TBI was his participation through the years in a weekly Men s discussion group in which Rabbi Michael Eisenstat is also a part. Robert appreciates that the staff, including Isaac Azerad, is flexible to offer help in unexpected ways. Even in the middle of the day he has dropped in to get assistance he needed to prepare for a cruise ship presentation and they were very accommodating. He appreciates this kind of welcoming feel, as when Rabbi asks before each service if there is anyone who is new in attendance. What have been the couple s favorite activities at the Temple? Some highlights for them have been the 92Y series, Rabbi Eisenstat s 50th anniversary in the Rabbinic celebration, and attending an occasional Shabbat dinner and services. TBI has filled a space in their lives - a place to go for holidays as well as to casually drop in and feel welcome. At any given event, they are thrilled with the interaction with the people they meet. The community is the most unique assembly of talent when you talk about their experiences in life. MAY 2017 As a student of the Quran and Islam, Robert has already contributed his own fascinating expertise with the TBI community when he presented in 2015 Islam Through Western Eyes. He was a former federal prosecutor in the Organized Crime and Racketeering Section of the U.S. Justice Department. He was appointed by the Federal Court to represent Muslim prisoners and his expert witness turned out to be the unnamed coconspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Since the 9/11 attacks, Gary has traveled extensively throughout the Middle East, seeking to gain a better understanding of Islam and frequently lectures. He is currently working on a book with Imam Subedar which will make the Quran accessible to non-muslims. TEMPLE BETH ISRAEL BULLETIN A Prayer for Children Ever since I began my prayer list for people I know and care about who are battling one disease or another, I always left Wednesday nights aside for the children everywhere who need someone to pray for them. Last week, after the incident in Syria, I asked the Rabbi if I might say that prayer (or one very much like it) from the bimah. He was most accommodating. So here is my prayer for those too young to understand all that surrounds them. Perhaps some of you might care to say it when you think about damaged, hurt, and abused children. Or just your own sweet little souls that you want so to protect. Adonoi: (please) May every child the world over live in peace and serenity. May each child have at least two adults who love him or her. May no child know starvation nor thirst from lack of food and water. May no child experience a devastating illness. May every child have a vivid and soaring imagination. May every child feel free to run in the sunshine, to laugh aloud, to see rainbows in the grass, and butterflies in the sky. May every child have a warm and comfortable bed to sleep in at night. May every child, wherever he or she lives anywhere on this earth, feel safe, and protected, and loved.
