From the Pastor s Pen November 2017 After every mission trip, I say This was a life-changing experience. But today, as I write this Pastor s Pen, I am wondering why am I not more changed? During a mission trip, I feel like nothing will ever be the same. I ll be different when I return. But then I m back at work, stress mounts, my aches and pains return, I run late to appointments -- succumbing to the same old, bad habits I ve always had. What s the point of a life-changing experience if life isn t really changed? What I ve concluded is that I have changed and each life-changing experience simply opens a door that shows me how much further I have to go; each question answered brings new questions, and often I m more confused than ever about God and Christian life after a mission trip than before. I experienced that riveting, knee-buckling mystery during a mission trip to several orphanages in Russia and perhaps I expect it each time, which leads to severe disappointment after the fact. Could it be that I covet that dramatic moment more than the concrete and sustainable lessons I learn on most mission trips. Mission trips are filled with the call for humility, patience, discomfort and wonderment fewer dramatic moments and more introspection. This I do know, mission trips help me to see God in more places; faces nobody photographs, broken communities, the prison cell, the heartbreak of crushing poverty and all other not-ready-for-facebook moments. Coming home helps me to see God in the everyday beauty of routine whether in the storm or in the sunset. Life with God and in Christian community is strengthened, both by lifechanging experiences, and the daily routine of spiritual disciplines prayer, reading Scripture, Holy Communion and fasting. Ordinary daily routine along with the extra-ordinary serves to remind me of God s saving grace in my life. In Christ s Service, Pastor Peggi

Congregation (con gre ga tion) noun The Latin word gregis means flock or herd and gives us words such as gregarious, fond of being with a herd of people ; segregated, set away from the herd ; aggregate, gathered into a herd ; and egregious, standing out from the herd. Congregation comes from this stem as well. From congregare, with con meaning together ; therefore, to herd or flock together. This idea of a flock is carried further in the word pastor, a leader of a church congregation. Pastor is Latin for shepherd, from pascere, meaning to pasture or feed. The Peru Lions Club has a donation bin located in the Fellowship Center that you can drop your old eyeglasses into. The Lions will recycle, repair and reuse the glasses for people in need. Welcome! On Sunday, October 15 th, Nonie Andrews and Shirley Arnold became members of Peru community Church. If you are interested in becoming a member, please call the church office or Pastor Peggi at (518) 643-8641.

THANKSGIVING BOXES Ladies Guild will be preparing 30 boxes of items for Thanksgiving dinners to be delivered by JCEO to families in need. The timeline for the donations always seems early in relation to the actual Thanksgiving date. However, our local JCEO office person delivers the boxes personally to families in need. Also, about the same time as Thanksgiving, the applications for heating assistance are due so she is very busy providing these services for the winter. The Ladies Guild is accommodating this schedule of dates in November. We are asking members of the congregation to donate items for the boxes. The following items are being requested: potatoes (5 lb.), carrots (2lb.), canned corn, canned peas, cranberry sauce, turkey gravy, canned yams, brownie mix, margarine, stuffing, rolls and foil turkey pans. These items should be brought in by Sunday, November 12 th 12:00pm. Carrots, potatoes, margarine and rolls should be brought in after November 9th. Ladies Guild will be purchasing 30 turkeys plus 5 additional turkeys. Monetary donations are also welcome. {Please check-off items when you bring them in so we can keep track.} Thank you for your continued generosity!
