And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. 2. And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. 3. And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast. 4. And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? 5. And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. 6. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. 7. And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

If any man have an ear, let him hear. 10. He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints. 11. And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. 12. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. 13. And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, 14. and deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. 15. And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. 16. And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: 17. and that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

(AKJV) Note: Exactly what to make of the symbolic sea is difficult, uncertain. Roper thinks it might represent teeming, restless humanity. I. Roper s Description. (13:1-3) A. Seven heads. Ten horns. Ten crowns. (12:3) B. Like a leopard, a bear, and a lion. Daniel 7:2-7 speaks of four beasts (a lion, bear, leopard, and a terrifying beast). 1. Daniel 7:2-7, Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea. And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another. The first was like a lion, and had eagle s wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man s heart was given to it. And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour much flesh. After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four

After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns. (AKJV) C. This beast of Revelation 13 is a composite of that (with all of its power and might) and generally thought to be the Roman Empire. D. The dragon gave him his power, throne and authority. E. One of the heads had been mortally wounded, but healed. F. The world marveled. II. The Worship of the Beast. (13:4-8) A. The world worshipped the dragon via the beast. The dragon gave the beast four things:... 1. The beast was given a mouth to speak great things and blasphemies. He blasphemed God, His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven. 2. He was given authority for forty-two (42) months (God limited his authority).

Ultimately, though, none of this occurs without Gdood:... 1. Romans 13:1, 4, Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. for he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. (AKJV) C. All who worship him are those who do not have their names written in the Lamb s Book of Life. Two horns like a lamb. The appearance is not threatening. B. Spoke like a dragon. Its true character is known; terror would be struck in the minds of those on the earth. C. Coupled with false prophet (16:13; 19:20; 10:10), this beast is associated with false religion. (Matthew 7:15) 1. Revelation 16:13, And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. (AKJV)

Revelation 19:20, And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. (AKJV) 3. Revelation 10:10, And I took the little book out of the angel s hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter. (AKJV) 4. Matthew 7:15, Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. (AKJV) II. His Authority. (13:12-15) A. He has the authority of the first beast. B. He causes those upon the earth to worship the first beast. 1. It is customarily thought that the first beast represented the Roman Empire. 2. From the time of Julius Caesar and especially to the time of Domitian, the people ascribed the title of god to the emperors. 3. This second beast, then, would be the enforcers of state religion. Ray Summers called them the Concilia

This was an official body which had the charge of state religion and had as its duty to force all to pay homage to the image of the emperor (cited by Roper, vol. 2, p. 58). 4. As Roper said, these two beasts put unbelievable pressure upon those two followed Jesus. C. Performs great signs. Certainly, the idea here is to get people to accept the being and message preached. 1. Fire comes down from heaven. 2. He deceives those on the earth. D. He made those on earth to make an image of the first beast. The image came alive. III. His Mark. (13:16-18) A. All upon the earth will receive the mark of the beast. 1. It is difficult to know whether something physical is in view or whether the language is metaphorical and is to be understood spiritually (Hailey). 2. What is to be understood, however, is that this mark is in contrast to the Lord s sealing those mentioned in chapter 7. B. On the right hand or the forehead. Roper suggests:...

The right hand would suggest that people s actions were affected. C. No commerce without the mark. 1. Economic deprivation is in view. a. Popular interpretations hold that it refers to a name or title of some individual; that is, that it is a riddle set forth by John (the Greek game gematria). 3. Roper, after careful consideration of a number of things, said, Three sixes represent the epitome of evil and deception. It is also the epitome of failure!
