August 15, 2010 Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary 3 Dear friends, I returned from vacation this week to St. Matthew s and once more marveled at the outward beauty of the grounds and the buildings of our Parish. We now have a striking medallion on the new brickwork outside the main door of the church: the combination of the Christogram (the Greek letters Chi and Rho) for Christos along with the Biblical Alpha and Omega. This design is one of the most ancient in the history of Christian art and is found in the catacombs in Rome. It is a reminder of Christ as the beginning and the end of all history and of all we do. It will also serve as an excellent focal point for any outdoor ceremonies we may have in the course of the Liturgical Year. More prosaically, but necessary, the new lighting of the parking lot and the new windows in the Rectory are all moving along. All of this is made possible by your generosity to your Parish! I also saw this week another beauty: the beauty of the Summer Program of the Religious Education program. Over 500 of your children from grades 4 to 7 at Mass every morning in the church; learning about their Faith in both precept and practice. Not only the children, but the dozens of catechists, helpers, and the parents make this unique facet of St. Matthew s Parish possible. I was deeply impressed by my experience of celebrating Mass for them this week. Their reverence and attention was wonderful. My thanks to Mary Donaldson and Rita Minder of the Religious Education Office as well as Thomas Tirino our Music Director who planned the music for each Mass. God s blessings, Father Hewes

Let us recall that after the death of Moses, Joshua was chosen by God to lead Israel into the promise land. The book of Joshua deals with Israel s conquest of the land of Canaan, and the dividing of the land to each tribe. In this last chapter, Joshua says farewell to the people and reminds them of all the Lord had accomplished for them. He knows that death is near, and he desires to encourage Israel to remain faithful to the Lord. He is also challenging them not to worship gods that can not hear, nor see, nor protect them. As a good leader Joshua is making this public commitment to the Lord in the hope that Israel will remain faithful to God. As we christens living today study the biblical accounts of how God dealt with the patriarchs and with Israel we are able to learn many valuable lessons. Let us take the sound advice Joshua gave to Israel. Let us love, worship and serve the Lord with all our heart, mind and soul. In doing so, God will bless us and give us peace of mind and heart in this life and eternal rewards in heaven.
