If you are new to this faith community or visiting, we d like to share information with you about worship and ministries at Trinity. Please let an usher know you d like a Welcome Booklet and also fill out an information card so we can get to know you! ~~ Children are always welcome in church ~~ The Sunday Papers coloring pages and activity bags are available at the back of the sanctuary so children can sit with their parents during the church service. The nursery is open and available for parents who would appreciate this offering. It is located in the west wing of this building, up the stairs outside the west sanctuary door. Older children are invited to Children s Chapel (September to mid-june) during the first part of the service, returning for the Eucharist. Parents, grandparents, and guardians are welcome to join their children in the Nursery or Children's Chapel to observe and enjoy these activities.

The following pages of this bulletin provide information about our services this morning, including the text of our assigned readings and the music (at our 10:15 service), as well as news about upcoming events. Please take this bulletin with you to refer to in the coming days. The Altar Flowers are given this morning to the glory of God. The small candle on the altar is a Candle for Peace. A practice begun in Russia, peace candles are being passed from church to church around the world. (Ours is from St. Paul s Episcopal Church in The Dalles, Oregon.) The candles and the story of the peace candle are available at the back of the church. We hope guests and visitors will take a peace candle to their home church. The Collect of the Day The Celebrant bids the assigned collect, saying these or some other words of introduction The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Priest Let us pray. Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. First Reading Isaiah 42:1-9 A lector reads the first reading from Scripture, first saying A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah. Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, 6

to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the LORD, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them. At the conclusion of the reading, the lector says Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. People Thanks be to God. The Psalm Psalm 29 A reader leads the congregation in saying the Psalm at the 8 AM service. At the later service, the choir sings the antiphon once, then the congregation sings the antiphon with the choir. The Cantor sings the verses, with the congregation joining in singing the antiphon as indicated below. 1 Ascribe to the LORD, you gods, * ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his Name; * worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. Antiphon 3 The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; * the LORD is upon the mighty waters. 4 The voice of the LORD is a powerful voice; * the voice of the LORD is a voice of splendor. 5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedar trees; * the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon; Antiphon 7

Antiphon 10 The LORD sits enthroned above the flood; * The LORD sits enthroned as King for evermore. 11 The LORD shall give strength to his people; * The LORD shall give his people the blessing of peace. Antiphon Second Reading Acts 10:34-43 A lector reads the second reading from Scripture, first saying A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles. Peter began to speak to them: I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ -- he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name. 8

At the conclusion of the reading, the lector says Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. People Thanks be to God. Gospel Hymn (10:15 only) I Come, the great Redeemer cries Hymnal 116 Gospel Matthew 3:13-17 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? But Jesus answered him, Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness. Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon The Rev. Jedediah D. Please greet those sitting beside and in the rows in front of and/or behind you. Birthday/Anniversary Blessings (along with other special prayers/announcements) Those with birthdays and/or anniversaries to celebrate are invited to come forward to receive a blessing. The People and Celebrant say the appropriate prayer together. For birthdays: For anniversaries: Watch over your children (child), O Lord, as their days increase; bless and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they stand; comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall; and in their hearts may your peace which passes understanding abide all the days of their lives (life), through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O gracious and everliving God, look mercifully on your servants. Grant them your blessing, and assist them with your grace, that with true fidelity and steadfast love they may honor and keep their promises and vows; through Jesus Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. If other members of the congregation wish, they may ask for additional prayers and blessings. A small treasure chest is placed on the chancel rail near the flowers. As members come forward for blessing, they may choose to place a thank offering in the chest. These gifts will be used to support outreach efforts for others in our community. 10

THE LITURGY OF THE TABLE Offertory Music Cantante Domino G.O. Pitoni Representatives of the congregation bring the people s offerings of bread and wine to the deacon. While the table is prepared, ushers will receive offerings as music is sung. The ushers present offerings of money or other gifts and then present these offerings to the celebrant. As these offerings are presented at the 10:15 service, the People sing the following, using the tune of Hymn 380. Be present at our table, Lord: Be here and everywhere adored; These creatures bless; and grant that we may feast in fellowship with thee. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving, Eucharistic Prayer B BCP, p. 367 The text of the prayer and responses is provided in the blue Book of Common Prayer, continuing on page 367. The setting for the Sanctus ( Holy, holy, holy Lord ) is sung as below. The service continues on page 368. 11

The Breaking of the Bread and Sharing of Communion The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread and a period of silence is kept. Then may be sung or said Alleluia. Christ, our Passover is sacrificed for us. People Therefore, let us keep the feast. Alleluia. Facing the people, the Celebrant says the following or some similar words of invitation and may add The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. All who seek God and a deeper life in Christ are welcome to receive Holy Eucharist. The ushers will direct parishioners forward at the appropriate time. If you would prefer a blessing, simply cross your arms on your chest. Receiving either the bread or the wine by itself constitutes full reception of the Holy Sacrament. Gluten-free wafers are available. Please notify the clergy at the altar rail if this is needed. Communion Music Come to the River Here at this Table The choir and/or instrumentalists typically share music while the people receive communion. Prayer Station A prayer station is available while communion is being shared. If you would appreciate personal prayer, please step to the station beside the steps and a member of the Prayer Ministry Team will offer prayerful support for healing (and for sharing of any other concerns or thanksgivings). Prayer after Communion BCP, p. 366 The Celebrant and People say a prayer in unison, the Celebrant first saying, Let us pray. Commissioning of Eucharistic Visitor(s) all stand If communion is being taken out, the Celebrant commissions the Minister(s), saying In the name of this congregation, I send you forth bearing these holy gifts (for N.N.), that those to whom you go may share with us in the communion of Christ s body and blood. The Blessing of God s People The Celebrant offers a blessing specific to this day May Almighty God, who led the Wise Men by the shining of a star to find the Christ, the Light from Light, lead you also, in your pilgrimage, to find the Lord. ANNOUNCEMENTS Sunday Forum TODAY @ 9:15 AM Our weekly adult forum meets weekly in Brooks Hall between our morning services, offering a time of fellowship, as well as a chance to exchange information or engage in deeper reflection. This morning s forum will allow time for some conversation about Christian identity in the light of Jesus baptism and our own. In the next couple of weeks, as we offer some information about our upcoming Annual Meeting, we ll continue this discussion of our identity as (to borrow the phrase from our Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry) the Episcopal branch of the Jesus Movement here in Central Oregon. Epiphany Potluck! TODAY following the 10:15 service Everyone is invited to a fun gathering in Brooks Hall! We ll provide a hot and hearty soup and invite you to bring a favorite salad or side dish to accompany the lunch. Dessert is provided in the form of the traditional King Cake, as part of the festivities. If you can stay a little longer to help clean up great! We ll distribute stars with your word for 2017 as part of the festivities! and there s bound to be something more to mark the occasion! We hope you ve brought one or more of the kings from the crèche you use at home and/or the Advent Calendar you colored these past weeks a bit of show and tell to share with others! Come and celebrate the season when we expect God to show up in our midst! Community Book Conversations beginning Tuesday, January 17 th A new 6-week community-wide overcoming racism book conversation series starts at Trinity Tuesday, January 17 th. Rick Negus and Cris Craig will facilitate, with support from Betsy Lamb. Find much more information in the next issue of The Trumpet (our monthly newsletter) Centered in Love Labyrinth Walk Saturday, January 21 st The Trinity Women s Collective s January event is a Centered in Love labyrinth walk. Join Donna Young, Jan Moore, Karen Cox (in absentia), and Barb Morris on the day after the Inauguration, from 9:30 to 11:30 AM, in St. Helens Hall to learn about Trinity s labyrinth and to walk it centered in love. The morning will begin with an introduction to Trinity s labyrinth and a centering meditation, followed by open walking of the labyrinth beginning at around 10:15 AM. Feel free to come for all or part of the morning. Questions? Trinity s Annual Meeting Sunday, January 29 th Once each year we gather to look back at the highlights of the previous year even as we look ahead at the year to come. NOTE: If you re responsible for a written report, please email your report to Jan Stalker by Friday, January 20 th. Send it to jan@trinitybend.org. As part of the business at our Annual Meeting, we ll give thanks for those who have served in leadership positions this past year, most notably the three members of the Vestry who retire this year: David Carroll, Wynne Osborne, and Arlene Ullman. And we ll also elect three new members to our Vestry to fill these vacancies. See the January issue of The Trumpet (our monthly newsletter) more information about the individuals who have been nominated to serve on the Vestry. In the meantime, here they are Jeannette Beeger Cathy Douglass Brent Walters Trinity Women s Retreat Registration for our February 17 19 Trinity Women s Retreat is now open! Brochures, with the registration forms, are in Brooks Hall and in the office. We ll fill the en suite rooms on a first come, first served basis. More details are in the January Trumpet, and team members will be in Brooks Hall after services starting January 29 th to answer questions. Donations from this year s Alternative Christmas project included $700 for Condega (20 uniforms), $3,269 for Cove/COPY (6 camp scholarships), $670 for Family Kitchen (223 meals), and $930 for Episcopal Relief and Development with the match. Many anonymous donations came from Trinity's Santa and his elf brigade who endured cold weather to allow kids to have pictures and conversations with Santa. Trinity elves included Kim, Abigail, and Judah Smith, Aiden Barclay, Owen Litehiser, Celine Burke and Little Sister Jasmine, Jim Allen, and Cody English. Thanks to all who helped with this effort including the Trinity staff who kept track of donations, the Alternative Christmas Table volunteers, and all our donors. All of us spread Christmas love, joy, and hope to people we may never meet. That's radical generosity! 15
