www.shrinechurch.com November 1, 2015 Page 1 NATIONAL SHRINE of the Little Flower Basilica Shrine Herald Daylight Savings Time Ends Sunday, November 1 Prayer for Vocations Loving and generous God, you called the prophets to bring your word to your chosen people. Your Son, Jesus, called the first disciples to be bold proclaimers of the good news. In the modern world, you continue to call your sons and daughters to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life. Calm the chaos and soothe the sounds of our world, and allow more to hear your soft voice calling them to pick up their cross and follow. May the Holy Spirit fall upon your church in a profound way, so that we may experience a tremendous harvest of grace. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2 ALL SCHOOL MASS 9:00 AM MASS OF REMEMBRANCE 7:00 PM May vocations increase ever abundantly and may your church stand as a witness to the world of the good news of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Mass will be at noon at the National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica followed by brunch at the Shrine Conference Center. Please call Marty Alves at the Development Office for any questions. Shrine parish and schools are most grateful for the blessings which have come to us through the generosity and good stewardship of our many benefactors. Each one of you is a truly important partner with us in the work of ministering to the people of God in our parish and school community. The Shrine Legacy Society has been established to recognize and thank those members of our Shrine community (parishioners, alumni and friends) who have included us in their estate plans either through their will, trust, retirement or life insurance plans, bank accounts, or life income gift such as a charitable gift annuity. Through great thoughtfulness, a timeless commitment has been made to continue the work of our parish and school community. Membership in the Shrine Legacy Society is simple. A simple statement indicating your desire to provide a legacy of support for the parish and/or schools is all it takes (form can be obtained from the Development Office). If you are able, a copy of the portion of the gift document would be accepted as well. If you wish to discuss how to make a planned gift or have already made a provision in your estate plans, please call Marty Alves at the Development Office at 248.541.4122 ext. 455. Fulfilling Our Commitment ~ Renewing Our Mission Campaign Update Parishioners, alumni, friends and guests have been asked to make a sacrificial offering over a period of three to five years in support of this effort. Many have already pledged very generously. If you have not made your decision yet and are able to contribute with a one-time donation or with a pledge for a period of three to five years, we would be most grateful. Please contact Martin Alves in the Development Office at 248.541.4122 x 455. www.shrinechurch.com November 1, 2015 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "I care now about one thing only - to love You, my Jesus!...I, a little child, well, I keep close to the throne of God and I love for those who fight." "Life is often a burden; such b i t t e r n e s s, b u t s u c h sweetness! Yes, life costs. It is hard beginning a day's work...if only one felt Jesus close at hand! Oh! One would do all for Him...but no, He seems a thousand leagues away, we are alone with ourselves...alas! He is not far off. He is here, close, looking at us, begging us to offer Him this grief, this agony...he needs it for souls, for our soul. He means to give us so splendid a reward!... But how will he say 'My turn now' if we haven't had our turn, if we haven't given Him a thing? Alas it is a great pain to Him to fill our cup with sorrows, but He knows it is the only way to prepare us 'to know Him as He knows Himself'. Oh! What a destiny! How great a thing is our soul! Let us lift ourselves above all that passes, not stay close to earth...jesus is hidden, but one senses Him." ~ St. Thérése of Lisieux Please call Marie Lama at 248.655.0309 if you would like the privilege of a Holy Hour with our Lord, truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. Lending Library First Lady of the World: A Popular History of Devotion To Mary by Peter Lappin is a "book about Mary which traces the history of devotion to her from the time of the apostles and the early Church to the present day. It finds, in the Old Testament, the foreshadowing's of the one whom God the Father would choose to be the mother of His Son. It follows the Church through the centuries and describes the unfolding of theological truth and popular piety concerning Mary. It shows how Christian believers in every age have turned to the Mother of God for help and inspiration. It discerns the place of Mary in the Church after the second Vatican Council, while looking forward to future developments in Marian theology and devotion." (Back Cover) Section 6, Mary. It is a time especially when we remember our deceased family members and loved ones. We should also remember in our prayers the souls of all the babies who have been aborted. In his encyclical The Gospel of Life Pope John Paul II says this to the parents of aborted children: To the Father and to His mercy you can with sure hope entrust your child. Baptism is the ordinary way to be born into God s grace. But we entrust these souls to the Lord, who loves all those he creates. CHRISTMAS BOOK COLLECTION We will be collecting new or gently used books for children of all ages from the weekend of October 31-December 6. You can donate your books in marked boxes outside St. Therese Chapel or Heritage Hall. These books will be distributed to needy families in Oakland County for Christmas. This is a Vicariate effort and Shrine has been asked once again to help with this project. Please help us share the gift of reading with our neighbors. Thank You. www.shrinechurch.com November 1, 2015 Page 11 Adult Faith Formation Growing in Prayer: Going Deep to Know God ~ Join us! Friday Morning Women s Ministry Friday, October 30 ~ 9:30 11:30 AM The cornerstone to any relationship is spending time with the one you love. The same is true for God. We grow in intimacy with Our Lord through a rich prayer life that includes many facets. Join us as we explore the various ways to pray, coming to know ourselves and God at a deeper level. We will be using the Growing in Prayer six week program developed by Manresa Retreat Center, based in the prayer traditions of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Cost is $10 per person to cover cost of materials. Growing in Prayer will lay the foundation for our upcoming study rooted in Fr. Timothy Gallagher s Discernment of Spirits. Growing in Prayer will be facilitated by Judy Maten. If you have any questions or would like to register, please contact Judy at judym@viamariaconsulting.com or call 313.268.1985. Calling all Women! Living the Discerning Life Study Group Fridays beginning Friday, November 6, 9:30 11:30 AM ~ Shrine Conference Center Living as a disciple of Jesus Christ requires us to keep Christ at the center of our lives. The challenges of everyday living can easily sway us from this. How do we know we are actually following God? How can we differentiate God s will from our own desires or the temptations of the Evil One? This is where discernment comes in - getting in tune with the movement of the Holy Spirit through prayer and recognition of God s presence in our lives and actions. Following in the footsteps of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Fr. Timothy Gallagher, OMV, will lead us through the discernment process in this video series. Reflection and discussion will help all to understand how to incorporate the practice of discernment into our decision making process, leading us to an ever deepening relationship with Jesus Christ and an interior peace that leads to a loving relationship with all those in our lives. There will be a $10 material fee for the class, payable at the first meeting. Please contact Judy Maten to RSVP no later than Monday, November 2, so enough copies are prepared. You can email Judy at judym@viamariaconsulting.com or call 313.268.1985. Helpful, but not necessary to the class, will be the books The Discernment of Spirits: An Ignatian Guide for Everyday Living and the Reader s Guide to The Discernment of Spirits, both by Timothy Gallagher, OMV. The books provide additional reading material that can be read at home. These additional materials may be ordered from Amazon.com (around $28 for both books; the Discernment of Spirits book is also available electronically - however the Reader s Guide is not). The books are also available at Manresa Jesuit Retreat House in Bloomfield Hills as well as at Faith at Works bookstore in Troy. C.R.E.W. High School Youth Ministry C.R.E.W. High School Youth Ministry is Shrine Parish s youth group. We welcome high school aged teens in grades 9-12 from all schools. Our teens represent many different public and Catholic schools as well as homeschools. A regular youth night will start with food and gathering from 7:15 to 7:30pm. Then we discuss the day s readings and find if we can relate that to where we are in our lives. After discussion, there is a themed event for the evening and a closing prayer before 9 pm dismissal. All are welcome! If you have any questions, please contact our Youth Minister, Christine Wist at cwist@shrinechurch.com or call 586.718.9145.

www.shrinechurch.com November 1, 2015 Page 13 Shrine Catholic Grade School At Shrine Catholic Grade School, we try to exemplify Christ by praying, learning, and growing together. Fifth graders are using SmartBoards to improve their cursive handwriting! Our newest SmartBoard uses technology to interpret handwriting, correct flaws, and make suggestions. We are also using technology in a cross curricular project with Mrs. Szafranic, our computer teacher, to create a power point about the saint biography we read. Fifth graders, dressed as saints, will visit other classrooms to make presentations using their power points. In social studies we have also been using technology to identify the latitude and longitude of cities. We have also been busy interpreting line and circle graphs, as well as climographs. The fifth grade students have been studying persuasive writing in English class. They then took this knowledge and applied it to their realistic fiction book reports. Students had to write about their story and then try to convince others to read it. They also had to create an advertisement that would try to sell their books to others. This project all came together with an oral presentation where the students told us about their book, listed reasons why they felt we would enjoy reading it, and they were able to show off their advertisements. It was great practice with their public speaking skills, and the students really enjoyed hearing about all of the great books! In math the students have been very busy investigating decimals. They have learned how to multiply decimals together, and we are now moving into division of decimals. Science classes find us focusing on matter. We are discovering atoms and elements and recently made a model of an atom. The students are also working on an element project to learn more about a particular element of their choosing. They are excited to share their findings with the class. Our fifth graders are working hard and are the best! ~ Mrs. Babel Mrs. Gilmour Mrs. Pierscinski

Page 14 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica The Evangelization Corner Cultivating Your Best Habit Without prayer, nothing good happens The Five W s Once upon a time, I was a journalism major at Michigan State University, only for a year, but long enough to take a few classes on the subject. One thing I remember about learning to write stories was to use the Five W s: who, what, when, where and why, to make sure the story was written well. Let s see how the Five W s work out when used to describe evangelization. Who: Every baptized person is joined to Christ s mystical body, the Church, and enlisted into the service of the mission Jesus gave the Church: go make disciples of all nations! All the baptized are called to be the light of the world as a disciple of Jesus, intent on joyfully making Jesus known by their words and deeds. What: At the heart of evangelization is the proclamation of salvation in Jesus Christ, that He matters, that He came to die for the forgiveness of our sins because He loves us. Also, that He stands at the door of our hearts and knocks, offering a life-changing relationship with Him that will bring us into a deeper peace, love and joy than we ve ever known. When: Every waking moment is an opportunity for us to shine the love of Christ in word and deed! Sometimes you ll be able to take more time to talk about Jesus with someone, sometimes we ve got to trust that our have a great day, God bless you is loaded with the power of the Holy Spirit and can work wonders in lieu of a conversation. Where: Everywhere I go, I m gonna let it shine Why: Jesus said to them, "Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you." (Jn 20:21) This week, challenge yourself to talk to someone about Jesus, someone you normally wouldn t be inclined to speak with about Jesus. Ask the Holy Spirit to prepare you and get you ready, and you can count on a great opportunity arising. God bless your week! ~ Fr. Patrick & the Evangelization Committee Divine Mercy Chaplet Continues Just a happy reminder that on Wednesday s at 3pm in the Adoration Chapel, communal recitation of the Divine Chaplet of Mercy will continue on in petition that God will abundantly bless the efforts of the Archdiocese and Shrine to embrace and thrive in the New Evangelization. Thank you for your prayers in general for the success of the New Evangelization at Shrine they have, and will, continue to work wonders! God bless you!
