It is a time especially when we remember our deceased family members and loved ones. We should also remember in our prayers the souls of all the babies who have been aborted. In his encyclical The Gospel of Life Pope John Paul II says this to the parents of aborted children: To the Father and to His mercy you can with sure hope entrust your child. Baptism is the ordinary way to be born into God s grace. But we entrust these souls to the Lord, who loves all those he creates. How can we differentiate God s will from our own desires or the temptations of the Evil One? This is where discernment comes in - getting in tune with the movement of the Holy Spirit through prayer and recognition of God s presence in our lives and actions. Following in the footsteps of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Fr. Timothy Gallagher, OMV, will lead us through the discernment process in this video series. Reflection and discussion will help all to understand how to incorporate the practice of discernment into our decision making process, leading us to an ever deepening relationship with Jesus Christ and an interior peace that leads to a loving relationship with all those in our lives. www.shrinechurch.com November 1, 2015 Page 13 Shrine Catholic Grade School At Shrine Catholic Grade School, we try to exemplify Christ by praying, learning, and growing together. Fifth graders are using SmartBoards to improve their cursive handwriting! Our newest SmartBoard uses technology to interpret handwriting, correct flaws, and make suggestions. We are also using technology in a cross curricular project with Mrs. Szafranic, our computer teacher, to create a power point about the saint biography we read. Fifth graders, dressed as saints, will visit other classrooms to make presentations using their power points. In social studies we have also been using technology to identify the latitude and longitude of cities. We have also been busy interpreting line and circle graphs, as well as climographs. The fifth grade students have been studying persuasive writing in English class. They then took this knowledge and applied it to their realistic fiction book reports. Students had to write about their story and then try to convince others to read it. They also had to create an advertisement that would try to sell their books to others. This project all came together with an oral presentation where the students told us about their book, listed reasons why they felt we would enjoy reading it, and they were able to show off their advertisements. It was great practice with their public speaking skills, and the students really enjoyed hearing about all of the great books! In math the students have been very busy investigating decimals. They have learned how to multiply decimals together, and we are now moving into division of decimals. Science classes find us focusing on matter. We are discovering atoms and elements and recently made a model of an atom. The students are also working on an element project to learn more about a particular element of their choosing. Page 14 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica The Evangelization Corner Cultivating Your Best Habit Without prayer, nothing good happens The Five W s Once upon a time, I was a journalism major at Michigan State University, only for a year, but long enough to take a few classes on the subject. One thing I remember about learning to write stories was to use the Five W s: who, what, when, where and why, to make sure the story was written well. Let s see how the Five W s work out when used to describe evangelization. Who: Every baptized person is joined to Christ s mystical body, the Church, and enlisted into the service of the mission Jesus gave the Church: go make disciples of all nations! All the baptized are called to be the light of the world as a disciple of Jesus, intent on joyfully making Jesus known by their words and deeds. What: At the heart of evangelization is the proclamation of salvation in Jesus Christ, that He matters, that He came to die for the forgiveness of our sins because He loves us. Also, that He stands at the door of our hearts and knocks, offering a life-changing relationship with Him that will bring us into a deeper peace, love and joy than we ve ever known. When: Every waking moment is an opportunity for us to shine the love of Christ in word and deed! Sometimes you ll be able to take more time to talk about Jesus with someone, sometimes we ve got to trust that our have a great day, God bless you is loaded with the power of the Holy Spirit and can work wonders in lieu of a conversation. Where: Everywhere I go, I m gonna let it shine Why: Jesus said to them, "Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you." (Jn 20:21) This week, challenge yourself to talk to someone about Jesus, someone you normally wouldn t be inclined to speak with about Jesus. Ask the Holy Spirit to prepare you and get you ready, and you can count on a great opportunity arising. God bless your week! ~ Fr. With this enrollment, the person or persons, living or deceased, will be remembered in a Mass once a month at the National Shrine on or near the first Friday of each month. The Masses will be celebrated every month in perpetuity. The suggested offering for the enrollment card and a card suitable to be given to family or individuals is $25 per card.
