As we prepare for Christmas, will the doors of our hearts open wide to Christ or are there some door-stoppers that need to be removed: Door-stoppers of sinful attitudes that can spring from any of the seven deadly sin sources - pride, covetousness, lust, anger, gluttony, envy, and sloth. An Examination of Conscience for Advent: This Advent, Jesus is inviting you to prepare your heart for His coming - Not just His first one, in Bethlehem, but His second, when He comes again in glory. He invites you to come to Him in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you identify areas of your life that need God s healing and loving touch. Take time to reflect, and use the following questions as a starting point. Yes to Love of God: Am I loving and serving God with my whole heart, mind, and strength? Where could I do better? Am I waiting and watching for the Lord through daily prayer? Am I learning to meet Him and listen to Him in His word? Have I sought Him through faithful Mass attendance and the Sacraments? Have I used my gift of speech in a way that honors God and builds up His people? Is there anything about it that needs cleaning up foul language, gossip, complaining, verbal abuse? Do both my mouth and my actions say, Yes, Lord! Does God hold first place in my life, or has something or someone else weaseled in? Is He the Lord of my time, money, and other resources? Have I been using these gifts to build His kingdom? Has desire or anxiety over money and material things affected my decisions and distracted me from God? Can I honestly say I trust God with every part of my life? Yes to Love of Neighbor: How am I doing in my relationship with family members, friends, coworkers, neighbors, parishioners? Have any of my words, attitudes, or actions cause disunity? Am I harboring anger, resentment, or hatred toward someone? Is there anyone I need to forgive? Is there anyone whose forgiveness I need to ask? Do I give appropriate respect to parents, teachers, employers, and all legitimate authority? Do I accept correction from them or from others, or have I sometimes pridefully insisted on my own way? Have I done violence to anyone or treated them with disrespect? Have I used or taken advantage of anyone? Am I helping to build a world where every human being is valued and seen as having dignity? Am I more focused on building myself a cozy, comfortable life than on caring for others? Is God inviting me to say yes to some service to people in need? How am I working for the coming of Christ s kingdom of justice and peace? Am I sinning by omission in any of these areas?
2 Parish Communal Reconciliation/Confession Celebration: This Sunday evening, December 16th, 10 priest confessors will be available at 7:30pm during the communal Celebration of Penance to help in the exercise of pulling any door-stoppers that prevent you from receiving Christ with joy. Come receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation/Confession this Advent with the desire of a deeper conversion of heart. (See page 2 for neighboring parish communal penance celebrations schedule) The Six R s of Reconciliation/Confession: Remembering, Reforming, Repenting, Returning, Reconciling, and Rejoicing: The first step in the process of the six R s is prayerfully Remembering or recalling what we so often find easier to avoid or suppress, in our relationship with God and each other. After remembering and reviewing - God s grace calls us to Reform and Repentance - in turn we are led to Return to experience God in our deeper selves and come to His Reconciliation and peace. True reconciliation leads us to joy and Rejoicing in the Lord. Regular Weekly Reconciliation/Confession Times are scheduled here at the parish from 6-6:25pm Wednesday evenings and 4-5pm and 7-7:30pm each Saturday. ANNUAL EPIPHANY PARTY IN TRANSITION: For many years, during the Epiphany Feast, the parish has sponsored an annual Epiphany dinner party for parishioners active in different ministries of the parish. This year on Epiphany day, January 6th the parish will sponsor an informal reception for all parishioners active in ministries after the 12:30pm Mass. There is a strong preference among parish staff and parish leadership, that this might be a more convenient time for a greater number of parishioners to participate in the annual Epiphany event. The 12:30pm Mass on Epiphany Sunday, January 6th will be offered in thanksgiving, acknowledgement and gratitude for all the gifts of service given to our Bethlehem King by our parishioners during these past years. All who are actively involved within parish ministries are invited to this Epiphany reception. The weekend bulletin of January 6th will have an honor roll list of names of parishioners nominated for special recognition because of their ministry of services to the parish. ALIENATED CATHOLICS ANONYMOUS (ACA) AFTER-CHRISTMAS SERIES: The six evenings series with emphasis on God s mercy and reconciliation will commence in the Parish Activity Center on Monday, January 7th at 7pm then continue for five consecutive Monday evenings. The series offers an ideal process for reintroducing inactive Catholics to the active practice of their faith. Personal invitations from family members or friends of those who are inactive to participate in the series from past experience makes a very significant and positive impact. Family members and friends in those instances could become sponsors in this active outreach ACA and become servant leaders with and in God s grace. Brochures for this ACA outreach are available in the vestibule of the church. Scripture Reflection Third Sunday of Advent December 16, 2018 Zephaniah 3:14-18a, Philippians 4:4-7, Luke 3:10-18 Shout for joy! Sing joyfully! Gaudete Sunday! The church and the priests are in pink, uh, rose. It is Rejoicing Sunday! Zephaniah was telling the Israelites that once they turned back to Him, they would be rejoicing. They had a Savior already with them. At the time, it was King Josiah who followed the old covenant faithfully. Paul told the Philippians to rejoice as well. Don t have any anxiety. What a change from a couple weeks ago! Not really to those of us who have accepted Jesus as our Savior, true? We already have the peace that surpasses all understanding John the Baptist kept telling people to treat each other fairly. They wondered if he was the Messiah, but he said he wasn t even worthy of untying the Messiah s sandals. I am baptizing with water, but one mightier than I is coming He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Lots of prophesy being fulfilled here. When you hear what Zephaniah or Isaiah or John the Baptist said, you realize how much Jesus did while He was alive or when He sent the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. A couple weeks ago, 23 people were confirmed, they were sealed with the Holy Spirit and so were each of you who have been confirmed. Today is Gaudete Sunday, a day to rejoice during Advent! A Savior is coming. Not only a baby in a manger. But Our Lord in His second coming. Yes, we are anticipating His coming. Are you ready for it? This evening, there is a Communal Penance Service. If you haven t been to Reconciliation yet this Advent, now would be the time. We ll have a church full of priests ready to hear your confession, offer absolution, and penances that are fair. Jesus is coming! Be ready! Rejoice! DID YOU KNOW... Did you know? That Gaudete Sunday gets its name from a Latin word meaning Rejoice? Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice. Let your forbearance be known to all, for the Lord is near at hand; have no anxiety about anything, but in all things, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be known to God. This part time position will be for the second shift evening crew primarily responsible for cleaning and maintaining the school buildings, Kino office, and other buildings on campus as required. The successful candidate must be a self-starter, well organized, able to work individually as well as with a team, and have a thorough knowledge of the use of the chemicals, tools, and equipment associated with custodial work and general maintenance. This one day pilgrimage to the orphanage and barrio is a prayerful, hands-on experience reaching out to the vulnerable and least among us. The carpool will depart from the parish at 8:00am on Saturday, January 12th and return by 8:00pm. Cars will be parked on the Douglas side of the border and the pilgrim group will walk across the border and board a bus for the 5-minute ride to the pilgrim site in Agua Prieta. There is no cost, but a freewill offering to offset the cost of the Mexican bus and to assist the orphanage will be collected. Pilgrims are responsible for paying for their own lunch at a Mexican restaurant. A valid passport is required. Interested parishioners may contact Rocio at the parish office, 747-1321.
