Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at www.stjoanofarcfl.com) Notes from the Pastor Lent Keep It Simple One Sin All of us know at least one area of sin to focus on during Lent. If it is hard to narrow our sins down to a these days, there are six deadly sins besides lust. As a matter of fact, there are some deadly sins that can be even deadlier than lust. These sins include pride and self love. St. Thomas Aquinas called these sins, the cause of ever sin. If we are having difficulty identifying which sin to concentrate on this Lent, we can ask God in prayer to reveal that sin to us. If we are still having trouble we can ask close family and friends to help us. However, we must be humble and listen to them and accept their assessment. The 7 Deadly Sins Pride: an excessive love of self or the desire to be better or more important than others. Lust: an intense desire, usually for sexual pleasure, but also for money, power, or fame. Gluttony: over consumption, usually of food or drink. Greed: the desire for and love of possessions. Sloth: physical laziness, also disinterest in spiritual matters or neglecting spiritual growth. Anger or Wrath: uncontrolled feelings of hatred or rage. Envy and Jealousy: sadness or desire for possessions, happiness, talents, or abilities of another. The Lenten Prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian is: O Lord and Master of my life, keep from me the spirit of indifference and discouragement, lust of power and idle chatter. Instead, grant to me, your servant, the spirit of wholeness of being, humble-mindedness, patience and love. O Lord and King, grant me the grace to be aware of my sins and not to judge my brother; for You are blessed now and forever. Amen. Adapted by Our Sunday Visitor by Fr. James Shafer March 31, 2019 Notes from Deacon Fred Healing Hugs He was eating with the swine in the mud. He squandered all his father had given him. He hit rock bottom. No friends, and a family he abandoned because of his selfishness. To whom could he turn? He thought that perhaps, just maybe, if he returned home his father would give him a job out of compassion. He had no where else to go. He was scared to go back and so he rehearsed his plea over and over again. And so he left for home. I am so scared. I m almost there.. there he is, so far away. Wait, he s looking toward me.. Here goes. Ah-oh he s running towards me.. what will I do? I must take courage and Father, I am sorry.. I am lifted off the ground as he hugs me. I am loved again! Forgiveness melts the heart and touches the divine. Forgiveness frees us to live again as God s children. In 1997 there was a young man who was involved in a snowmobile accident which left his arm and shoulder in great pain. After an MRI was performed he was found with three shattered vertebrae in his neck which even when fused and fixed led to a condition similar to MS. The doctor gave him two years to live. He was angry with God Why me? His sister who survived breast cancer earlier attributed her healing through her beginning the process of forgiveness for those who have hurt her in the past and asking forgiveness from those she had hurt. He decided to take her advice and try. He went back to his faith and started to really believe in God s promises. He started to live the way that Jesus taught. He forgave his father for abandoning his family when he was only 12 years old. He shed his bitterness and anger. He chose not to be angry with God. He became unafraid of death was at peace again. Healing began and remained. He went back to school, earned a doctorate in counseling and began a ministry known as Wellspring Ministries. He spreads the word that forgiving from the heart is a choice. I purpose and I choose to forgive from my heart. Anger, bitterness, resentment and fear are sin and God gave us and answer to sin - Love not condemnation. When we experience moments of anger, resentment, bitterness and especially fear we need to remember that these are sin and we need to turn to God for the grace to change. No matter how far away from Him we might find ourselves, if we turn back to him, we won t finish with our prayer... before He lifts us off the ground and hugs us with his loving arms to welcome us home!

March 31, 2019 (View this bulletin on-line at www.stjoanofarcfl.com) Page 3 T M S. J A P J,,,. GOD FORGIVES The Lord said to Joshua, Today I have removed the reproach of Egypt from you. After forty years of wandering in the desert, this hard-headed people have finally reached the Promised Land. No more do they eat the manna in the desert, but they partake of the fruits of their new homeland. God has kept the promise to their parents in Egypt. Even though they were a sinful people, many times questioning God and even worshiping false gods, God has forgiven them and fulfilled the promise. The takeaway for us is that there is no sin that is unforgivable. We may have offended our neighbors, given a bad example to someone, even worshiped the false gods of money and power. But God is a merciful God, true to the words spoken to us. God forgives all and calls us back to love. One of the best-loved stories of our tradition is today s Gospel story of the runaway son and the prodigal father. Prodigal, of course, is an adjective meaning spendthrift or extravagant to a degree bordering on recklessness, and although the boy maxes out the credit cards, it is really the father who is prodigal with forgiveness. Part of the excitement of this Laetare Sunday is rooted in the ancient catechumenate. Long ago, midway through Lent, the elect were focusing more and more on the gift of reconciliation accomplished for them by Christ and about to be realized in the Easter sacraments they were preparing to celebrate. In some places, the elect were even bedecked with roses on this day. A person bedecked with roses sticks out in a crowd; a person formed by the Eucharist and committed to living a life of reconciliation does, too. That s you! James Field GOD S CAPACITY FOR FORGIVENESS Where is the foolish person who would think it in his or her power to commit more than God could forgive? St. Francis de Sales HAPPINESS Happiness will never be ours if we do not recognize to some degree that God s blessings were given us for the well-being of all. Anonymous Whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come. 2 Corinthians 5:17

You cannot out-do the generosity of God.
