In a 5 or 6 quart slow cooker combine the first eleven ingredients. Cook, covered on low 6-8 hours or until vegetibles are tender. 2. Just before serving; stir in macaroni; heat through. Page 3 Deacon Mike's Corner I don't understand why the pope and bishops live in luxury when they are servants of Christ? Actually, most bishops do not live in the luxury you suppose. The material resources at their disposal are not for their private benefit but to carry on the mission of the Church. When a bishop retires or resigns, for example, he moves out of the official bishop's residence. He does not own his residence anymore than a former president owns the White House when he leaves office. You will sometimes hear people accuse our leaders of greed and excess. These people consider things like ornate cathedrals and the art treasures of the Vatican is excessive. but the pope and the bishops do not personally benefit from these things. A cathedral's beauty and the Church's art treasures are for the whole Church-- -indeed, for all humanity. They are a means of honoring God (1 Kings 6,8:12-13). In the past, it is true that some bishops and even popes exploited their offices for personal gain. When this occurred, they deserved rebuke for this sin. Typically, however, popes and bishops seem more conscious of the fact that misuse of wealth not only endangers their own souls but can lead others astray and bring ridicule to the cause of Christ (Sir 31: 5-7, Mt. 6:24, CCC 2424, 2729). One of our cardinals in the U.S empties his checking account for the poor and to friends at the end of each year. His aim is to begin each year with nothing in his personal account. This is a sign of a man who is detached from the material world. I am sure there are many other church leaders who do more and are similarly detached from material things. Lastly, the bishops in our diocese receive the same pay as senior priests do, less than $40,000 per year, but do have a stipend for travel and expenses. Archbishop Schnurr lives in a residence in Anderson Township in Hamilton County owned by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, that he uses for housing guests, meetings, and entertainment. Bishop Joe Binzer lives in an apartment above St. Louis Church in the downtown area of Cincinnati. It is a very modest place to stay. Retired Archbishop Pilarchek of Cincinnati lives in a nursing care facility no different than some of us live in. They do not get rich off of serving the Church. They do not drive a Mercedes nor a Cadillac in this diocese! Social Justice Committee The Social Justice Committee s Yard Sale was a huge success this year. Thanks to all who donated, shopped, and worked! Our annual Cookie Sale is scheduled after all Masses on Saturday, December 15, and Sunday, December 16. The public sale will be Saturday, December 15 from 9 am till noon. Please mark your calendar for this event as bakers are needed. If you are interested in working any portion of the sale, please contact Jan Sunderhaus 513-738-4967 or Vicki Cross 513-708-6720. The Committee continues to serve the homeless by providing meals on a scheduled basis at Serve City on East Avenue, Hamilton. We want to thank Neal s BBQ on North Third Street for their donation of pulled pork and buns for the Serve City meal in July. The dates for the remainder of 2018 are Saturday, September 29; Wednesday, October 31; and Saturday, December 29. We are always looking for cooks and servers for this inspirational event. If these dates do not fit into your schedule, please feel free to put together your own small group and have another date scheduled for you. There are several groups within the church that have done so and find this ministry very rewarding. This ministry is a great way to put the Queen s best foot forward. Seventh Grade News The school year is off to a great start!! We were truly excited to get our students back and be in the flow of a routine. During September, we held Curriculum Nights for parents to get better acquainted with curriculum and expectations for their students new grade level. In addition, we have been working on our school wide virtue of the month, Hope. Students have also started STAR reading and their MAPS testing. Throughout the entire school year, as a school we are focusing on 5 Goals. We use the same goals for the entire school, however K-5 th grade versions are worded more appropriate for their grade levels. They are: 1. Having high academic standards and work ethic. (Work hard and always do your best 2. Making Christ centered decisions. (Be like Christ) 3. Being open to change and growth. (Be flexible) 4. Having positive interactions with diverse people. (Be kind to everyone) 5. Celebrating the obstacles you have overcome. (Celebrate success) We look forward to working towards these goals all year long in order to continue to grow our school!
Page 4 Scandal in the Catholic Church By Jeff Ehrnschwender Adapted from a reflection written for my day of Ordination - April 25, 2010 Now why would anybody in their right mind choose to go to school for six years just to be ordained in a church that is riddled with scandal? Why would anybody do that? I had a class on Church History. The history of the Church is littered with scandal. Two thousand years of scandals, heresies, deceptions and wars. What I learned is that the history of the Church is littered with humans. And in the midst of all that litter and scandal I also learned about some Saints. So scandal is not what Church History is about. The real lesson of any Church History class is this: Led by the Holy Spirit, the Church is still here in spite of all the scandals. If this endeavor was of human origin, it would destroy itself, but nothing can snatch us away from the love of God. I had other classes besides Church History: Moral Theology, Eucharist, Marriage, Hermeneutics (which is the study of scripture), Canon Law, Baptism, Music and Homiletics. I learned a lot in those six years, and there s still a lot I don t know. But what I learned in each of these classes is more than their content. The real lesson of all the classes I took is how good it is to be Catholic! Being Catholic defines who we are. We aren t someone who is a member of the Catholic church. We ARE Catholic. We do all that Catholic stuff because we are called to make Jesus present in the world, and when we are led by the Holy Spirit, Christ is present in us and we can be Christ for others. Nothing can snatch us away from the love of God. God loves us so much that He allows us free will. That means God allows us to make choices. It s like all of us are His 16-year-old daughter and He is letting us drive by ourselves for the first time All The Time. It s that kind of love. God hopes we make good choices but He doesn t control us. And likewise, God does not control what happens to us. But whatever choices we make, nothing can snatch us away from God s love for us. (Continued) (Scandal in the Catholic Church Continued) This doesn t mean we don t stumble. Fifteen years ago, our little Queen of Peace parish was dragged through the headlines by the priest scandal. Like now, we all pay dearly for it. It s like all Catholics are on trial. Others judge our faith by what they read in the paper and what they hear on the news. As we try to defend ourselves to a jury of our peers, we question our own faith and we crossexamine what we believe and why. There comes a time to choose. Do you curse the darkness or do you stand up and turn on a light? We are called to be witnesses, not lawyers or judges. That, my friends, is why I m writing these words. The real story of the priest scandal is not the scandal. It is our response as Catholics. In 2010 I was ordained a deacon along with 35 other men, into the Catholic Church that has withstood scandal for over 2000 years. The Catholic Church, led by the Holy Spirit, will always continue to make Jesus present in the world! Nothing can snatch us away from the love of God. Let s stand up and turn on a light! Page 5 Virtues In Practice Queen of Peace School is off to a good start with our Virtues in Practice program. This year covers the Theological Virtue of Hope. Specifically, in October, we will be studying the virtue of Studiousness: seeking knowledge to grow closer to Truth. School families are invited to complete a Home Project pertaining to studiousness. Here are a few of the suggested projects. Maybe you would like to try one. After all, we are never too old to learn something new! 1. Find something in nature that is really tiny but really beautiful. What does this teach us about God? Find something really, really big in nature that is also beautiful. What does this teach us about God? 2. Talk to a devout Catholic doctor or scientist. Ask how scientific knowledge brings him or her closer to God. 3. Does training your mind (in, for instance, mathematics) make you better able to receive truths about God? How? Set a goal to read something that is educational for at least 15 minutes every day. As we practice the virtue of Studiousness, it will grow and become a habit. Through our efforts we become closer to God and more aware of God's presence in our lives. STUDENT SUNDAY Queen of Peace Parish is introducing a new endeavor this school year on the First Sunday of each month at the 11:00 a.m. Mass called STUDENT SUNDAYS. On STUDENT SUNDAY, students from a particular grade level will participate at Mass in specific ways. They will serve as greeters, choir members, lectors, ushers, gift bearers, procession participants and servers as well as assist at Donut Sunday. STUDENT SUNDAYS are for all of our QP students in public school, Queen of Peace School, and homeschool. On October 7th, the students in Grade 7 will be helping at our first STUDENT SUNDAY. Do you have an elementary aged child? Please hold the date for your student so he/she can be sure to participate in STUDENT SUNDAY! All families with students in grades 1 through 8 will receive an email about a month ahead of their STUDENT SUNDAY so they can sign up to participate. The Prayer Blanket Ministry makes available a small blessed blanket for those who are seriously ill. Blankets are traditionally associated with warmth, comfort. And security. A Very Big Thank You to the Prayer Blanket Ministry We received a card with a note and a letter with more information. The wording for both is below. Dear Ladies of the Queen Of Peace Church, First of all I would like to thank all of the wonderful ladies who contributed all their hard work and love and care that went into each and every blanket that has been made. You see I have end stage Lupus. I ve had a stroke, oxygen is necessary. I m in bed most of the time. I m in constant pain. However, all is not lost. I have the good Lord on my side: He is with me each and every day. He helps me thru all my days and my pain. I have wonderful friends one I m sure you all know, Sandy Murphy. She is the most loving, kindest, honest person I ve ever met. She sent me one of the blankets you ladies made. I keep it with me always. It comforts me when I m in pain, It comforts me when I can t breath, and it comforts me to know how many prayers are out there for me. Thank you all just for being you. Nancy Sian Ladies, Ladies, Ladies, I would love to tell you a story: As I explained to you in the card I sent, I have end stage Lupus. I also have a number of other medical problems, I ve had a stroke, as a result, I have only one functioning kidney and I m in constant pain. A dear fried of mine sent me a beautiful blanket, it came to me with all the love and blessings anyone could ever want or need. I cover myself with it each and every night. One night I woke up and couldn t breath and had severe chest pains, my husband called 911. I was rushed to the hospital with multiple blood clots in my lungs. On the way out the door, my husband and grandchildren started yelling at the EMT s Wait take her blanket she won t leave without it! Make sure it stays with her. She will flip out! and thank the good Lord they listened: I was unresponsive, I woke up two days later. They have Never Ever seen anyone come around with all their facilities, smiling, talking (sometime hollering) eating and breathing fine. Shortly after, all the clots dissolved. I was truly at deaths door. Well they may say it was the great medical treatment I received. However, I believe it was a combination of my blessed blanket, my Lord, and all the prayers I received from my church and the blessings I received from my new family of prayers in Ohio.
