The Bread Boy E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Bishop Barres s Letter Fifty years ago Pope Paul VI wrote the encyclical Humanae Vitae which was considered controversial in its day. Looking back over those five decades it turns out that he was rather prophetic in considering the issues of human life. In recognition of the anniversary of this document, Bishop Barrres has written a pastoral letter to everyone in our diocese and has asked us to invite people to read it. The diocese has put it together on any easy-to-read website and you can view it at supremegiftletter.com In his letter, Bishop Barres not only references Paul VI but also more recent popes up to and including Pope Francis and he also highlights our own diocesan efforts to help couples who are trying to conceive. Check out stbernardchurch.org/ sommertime One of the amazing miracles of Jesus was the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. He fed thousands, as we see in today s gospel (John 6:1-15) using only five loaves and two fish as the source of this abundant feeding. But perhaps the one person who gets overlooked in the drama of this great event is the boy who had those few loaves and fishes. My guess is that his family gave him the job of carrying their lunch. And now he s surrounded by a bunch of big apostles who want him to give up the food. I can only imagine his dad saying to him, We gave you only one job: hold on to the lunch. And you gave it away? From a distance those few loaves and fish were almost nothing, compared to the needs of the crowd. But to the boy, it was everything he had! The gospel doesn t say if the boy was a willing participant in the food donation, or whether he was cajoled or otherwise pressured into giving it up, but we know that without his loaves and fishes, the crowd would have gone away hungry. As we get ready to do some amazing renovations of our parish campus, I can t help but think of the nearly 500 families who have already given in our Let s Build! Campaign. The largest gift to date has been $71,000. The smallest has been one gift of $20. The average pledges are between $3,000 and $4,000 over five years (between $50 and $70 a month). No one family has given the whole amount ($1.75 million) nor is that necessary when many people share their equivalent of loaves and fishes. Just as Jesus was able to take what the boy had to offer and multiply it so that all were fed, so too we -- as a church family -- accept all the gifts and watch them multiply into an amount that will meet our needs. If you are still considering what pledge to make, perhaps today s gospel will inspire you to make this the week to decide and let us know. We wouldn t want to have to send a bunch of big apostles to your house! 3
PARISH NEWS The Rosary Society will meet on Monday, August 6 at 12:30 pm in the prayer room of the church. We will pray for our individual needs and those of all Rosarians, living and deceased, especially those who are sick. We all want peace. Let us pray together for peaceful solutions to the problems present in our homes, our families, our parish, our country, and the whole world. We also will pray for the members of our armed services, and our policemen and fire fighters and all those who work to keep us safe and healthy. LITURGY CORNER Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 29, 2018 First Reading: Twenty barley loaves and some fresh grain the man from Baal-Shalishah brought to Elisha to feed a hundred people. Who would believe that this would be enough food for that many people. Elisha s servant did not. But Elisha, the prophet who succeeded Elijah, refuses to rescind his instructions to the servant. Indeed, there was enough food and even some left over. The miracle story of Elisha feeding the one hundred, pairs with the story of the multiplication of the loaves and fish in the Gospel reading. God s abundant care for his people is evident in both. In God, we will never go hungry. Responsorial Psalm 145: The refrain provides the obvious connection to the first reading as it affirms how the Lord s hand feeds us and how the Lord answers our needs. The reference in the second stanza to the Lord providing the faithful the food they need, also relates to the feeding story from 2 Kings. Overall, the psalmist in Psalm 145 conveys the bounty of the Lords goodness toward his people. For the goodness of our gracious Lord, we give thanks. Second Reading: Ephesians 4 begins a section of the letter that offers moral instructions to Christians. The verses we proclaim today provide a list of virtues that teach us what it means to live as Christians. The statements of unity that includes seven one statements, reveal how deep the communion among Christians within the Church is. The Church makes visible the unity founded on the one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God, and one Spirit because the Church is the one Body of Christ. Gospel: From today through the end of August, the Gospel readings come from John 6 concern Jesus identity as the Bread of Life. We begin in this chapter with the story of the multiplication of the five barley loaves and two fish. At the beginning of the story, Jesus inquires of Philip where they are going to procure enough food for the large crowd. Philip s response does not provide a practical solution, but simply restates the problem in monetary terms. Andrew notes the boy with the barley loaves and fish. Foreshadowing the Eucharist, Jesus gives thanks and distributes the food. The disciples gather the leftovers. Through the miracle, Jesus provides more than enough for everyone to have their fill. Jesus rejects the earthly kingship he knows this great sign would bring, so he withdraws to the mountain again. His work is a ministry of nourishment for it is the will of his Father that he should feed people, even with his very life. Sourcebook 2018 Sunday, July 29. St. Vincent de Paul: Thanks to everyone who remembers our low-income Levittown neighbors with food and monetary donations. Special thanks to the Levittown Community Council for their donation following their Lazy Days of Summer event! As always, we are most grateful! This week, our pantry needs include: Canned meat (tuna, chicken) Canned pasta ( Chef Boy-ar-dee type) Canned tomatoes Canned corn Beans (1 lb. bags or cans) Boxes of pasta Toasted Oats cereal ( Cheerios type) Please remember the poor boxes and to buy one, get one free! Don t tell anyone (especially your children) that before too long, it will be back to school. As is our custom, we will try to provide some items for each of the children whose families visit our pantry. We have noticed that good sales are beginning, so if you feel the urge to shop, our children could use: Marble (not spiral) notebooks Index cards Post-its Markers Pencils Pens (black, red, blue) Crayons Glue sticks 2 and 3 binders and loose leaf paper Backpacks for junior and high school students As always, thank you for your gracious generosity! PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY Sr. Christine Sammons, O.P., 731-6074 Gabriel s Courage: At a recent meeting of Parish Social Ministry Coordinators, we were introduced to a very important program which is part of Catholic Health Services wide outreach. Gabriel s Courage is a family-centered prenatal program for families who receive a life-limiting prenatal diagnosis during their pregnancy. The program offers a team approach to care and support throughout the pregnancy, birth and post-birth of a baby. Any woman living in Nassau or Suffolk who has received such a diagnosis is eligible for Gabriel s Courage services. We have further information in our office if someone you know is experiencing a challenging pregnancy. If you wish, you can call 631-465-6363 for further information. In addition to Gabriel s Courage, we were given good information about Good Shepherd Hospice (skilled medical and supportive care with compassion,) and Catholic Home Care (providing skilled care in the comfort of your home in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens.) The women from Catholic Health Services who gave the presentations reminded us of how pro-active the Catholic community is in reaching out to those in need of compassionate, professional caring. A quote they live by is: You matter until the last moment of your life and we will do all we can, not only to help you die peacefully, but to help you live until you die. (Dame Cicely Saunders.) Their services are accessible to all individuals, regardless of race, color, religion, lifestyle or economic status. Call our office for further information, or call 516-586- 1420. St. Bernard s Alzheimer s Caregiver Support Group Meetings are held on the 2 nd and 4 th TUESDAY of the month from 11:00 am to 12:00 Noon in St. Bernard's Parish Center. Water Color Art Show Selected watercolor paintings by Father Augustine are being displayed in the Prayer Room of St. Bernard s Church, Levittown, from July 15-29 for viewing and acquisition through silent auction. The Art show is extended for another week in order to facilitate more participation. It will end on 5th August before 5.30 PM mass. The proceeds of the sale of paintings go to help the ministry of the Little Sisters of the Poor for the aged and the destitute. The Little Sisters of the Poor provide service to the poorest of the poor in all the impoverished areas of the world. They pick up the homeless and destitute from the streets and offer them quality dedicated service absolutely free. It is their charism to live by the providence of God without receiving big donations but sustain their ministry by begging day by day. This art show is only a little effort to afford them small help to support their mission. By buying one of these paintings you are adding your tiny mite to the great work of God for the poor that Pope Francis has been consistently promoting the faithful to do. All the pictures are matted and framed and are ready to decorate your homes or to be presented as gifts. This will be a Silent Auction and here is the procedure: 1. Please choose the painting that you are interested in and note the number. 2. From the plastic box pick the card that bears that number. 3. Write your name, phone number, and your offering for the painting. 4. The highest bidder gets the picture. 5. The last date for the auction will be July 29.
