Youth Ministry Minute By: Garrett Hovland Words, Words, Words Did you know the average humanbeing speaks about 16,000 words each day? You might laugh and think, well I know someone who says many more than that! Words can make us laugh hysterically and words can cut deep wounds in our hearts that sometimes takes years to lessen their effect. Words can breathe life into us or suck life out of us. Words are powerful! How often though do we take time to think about the words that we say? Often we just speak without even thinking about what is coming out of our mouths or without even realizing the power our words hold. This past month in JAM we spent a night considering the words that are coming out of our mouths and hopefully as you read this you, too, will take time to consider what words have come out of your mouth recently. Scripture is no stranger to words. Think about this for a minute. The God of the universe chose to record His words for you and me to read! The book of Proverbs has much to say about the words coming out of our mouths. Proverbs 18:21 characterizes well the two extremes that our words can have in the lives of others and ourselves, the tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. Jesus even makes a connection in Matthew 12:34 between the words coming out of our mouth and what is taking place in our hearts, for out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks One of the convictions for me as I prepared this lesson for JAM was how often unthankful words come out of my mouth. As Thanksgiving draws near, take some time to give thanks to God for the gift of a mouth that can speak words and take time to intentionally speak life into someone this week! Think you can t do it? Well how about this God gave you 16,000 chances!
101 Questions for Family Dinner We all know family dinner is important. But do you know how important it is? Here s some of the research: According to Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine in 2004, children ages 11-18 who dine frequently as a family experience less depression and suicidal tendencies, and have better grades. Additionally, frequent family dinner is the single most important factor in the development of a child s vocabulary (Harvard Research, 1996). Columbia University s 2012 study shows that regular family dinners increase the likelihood of excellent relationships between parents and teenagers. In turn, these excellent relationships lead to a radical decrease of substance abuse in teenagers. Continued 16) What is one goal you have for this year?
