October 2014 Edition MESSAGE FROM THE BASILEUS C hi Phi Brothers, Welcome to Fall. We've had an exciting 2014 summer season. A lot of activities took place including a Conclave in Philadelphia, an 8th District Meeting in Colorado Springs and the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Paint- A-Thon! What a way to end our year. However, we still have our Achievement Week Celebration and the Annual Christmas Party to go, so we're not through yet! Our big Achievement Week Banquet will take place November 15, 2014 at the Holiday Inn- Stapleton. It's a Black Tie Affair to celebrate the conclusion of an outstanding year. This year, we will celebrate in a different way by honoring our Brothers who've made outstanding contributions to the Chapter, District and International mandates, including the Omega Man of the Year and the Citizen Of the Year awards. Next, we'll hold our Talent Hunt display to find a talented youth who will be our representative for the 8th District Talent Hunt Program in Des Moines, IA in July 2015 and hopefully go on to represent Chi Phi and the 8th District at the Leadership Conference in Jacksonville, FL. Finally, we'll highlight the Holmes/Omega, scholarship program and give a scholarship to one of their designees! There will be no cost for fully financial Brothers and one guest. The cost to the general public and Brothers who are not financial will be $35. In addition to banquet itself, we have a full week of activities planned for the Brothers, wives/ significant others, and kids. Brother Omar Montgomery (Immediate Past Chi Phi Basileus) has put together an outstanding committee and an even more stellar program for this years Achievement Week celebration. I hope that you can make it to the CHI PHI SPEAKS C O N T E N T S S P O T L I G H T ON H I S T O R Y S P I R I T U A L W A R F A R E : C H R I S T I A N S T E N D TO C A T E G O R I Z E S IN OCTOBER CHAPTER MEETING S AT. OC T O B E R 4 TH, 2014 6 P. M. AT T HE O WL C L U B event. We want to see you there and we need your support. On a different note, on September 27th, I accepted the Legacy of Service Award on behalf of Chi Phi Chapter from the Colorado Black Round Table along with other leaders from the Divine 9 in the surrounding area. This award speaks volumes for Omega in the Denver community. Since our establishment in Denver in 1927, this chapter has long been a leader in the community. We don't seek personal recognition for doing what we know is right in our hearts. However, when the community takes the time to recognize our efforts, I believe we are meeting our charge and watch word of "Service" to the highest degree. I am proud to be a small part of such a large organization with even a larger will to be a positive force in the communities we live in...and the communities we don't live in. Service to all mankind. We are the Men Of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. Yours in Service Brother Michael Short Basileus Chi Phi Chapter Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Chi Phi Speaks 1 Chiphiques.com

SPOTLIGHT ON HISTORY Ret. Col., Brother John Henry Smith By Jeffrey T. Smith, 29th Eighth District Representative (a reprint from the Omega Clarion Call, Spring 2007 edition): R et. Col., Brother John Henry Smith is an Omega man imbued with the desire to serve humanity and his country as an officer in the United States Air Force. Smith has done extraordinary things to help the several communities he has called home. Brother Smith s service to Omega began in February of 1951, when he was initiated into the Fraternity through Lambda Epsilon Chapter. Smith served as president on a pledge line of 13 and received direction and guidance from Past Grand Basileus, Brother Burnel Coulon who was then member of the Lambda Epsilon Chapter. Brother Benjamin Mays, president of Morehouse College, spoke at Smith s initiation ceremony. Brother Smith recalled fondly of the activities on Tuskegee s campus during the early 1950 s and in particular the day of May 18, 1953 which served as a milestone that would form his life for next 50 years. He graduated from college that day and also became a (Continued on page 4) Chi Phi Speaks 3 Chiphiques.com

(Continued from page 3) second lieutenant in the United States Air Force. The day ended with the wedding ceremony to his college sweetheart, Mildred. Their union has continued more than 50 years. The couple has four grown children and three grandchildren. He has traveled extensively as an Air Force officer. Those assignments included stints at Elgin AFB (Florida), Elmendorf AFB (Alaska), Sheppard AFB (Texas), Lackland AFB (Texas), Lockbourne AFB (Ohio), Clark AFB (Philippines) and the Republic of Vietnam. During his stay at each station, he continued his education receiving several degrees throughout his career. Brother Smith attended night and Saturday school to complete each degree and worked around the clock in an effort to support and care for his family. He distinguished himself many times as a passionate advocate for men and women requiring financial assistance and guidance. In addition to his demanding military assignments, Brother Smith served on credit union boards at three Air Force installations to include Elmendorf, Lockbourne, and Lackland. He served as chairman at Lackland. Brother Smith retired in December of 1978 as director of management and budget for the Air Force Logistic Command (AFLC). He received numerous awards and honors for his military and community service contributions. He currently lives in Denver and remains an active member of Chi Phi Chapter. He has received the Chapter s Omega Man of the Year, Superior Service, and Founders awards. The Chapter also selected Brother Smith as its Citizen of the Year for his work on numerous projects that supported the less fortunate. He served 12 years as board president of the Northeast Denver Housing Center, a non-profit organization that provides affordable housing to low-income families. As an 11-year active member of the Tuskegee Airmen, Smith has served as president of the Hubert L. Hooks Jones Chapter. Smith is a member of the Tuskegee Airmen national board of directors and scholarship foundation. The group gave Smith the Norris Parrish Award, its highest award. Brother Smith has lived a life of service worthy of emulation by others. The four cardinal principles are evident in his military career, community service, and more than 50 years of faithfulness to his wife and family. He is just one of several Omega military men who have exemplified the words of friendship, fraternity, fidelity, and freedom. Chi Phi Speaks 4 Chiphiques.com

CHRISTIANS TEND TO CATEGORIZE SINS BY BRO. GANIYU ABDUL C hristians tend to categorize sins, rating some as small and inconsequential, but others as huge and far-reaching in the damage they cause. Sin, as defined in the Bible is simply the breaking or transgression of God's law (1 John 3:4). It is also defined as disobedience or rebellion against God (Deuteronomy 9:7), as well as independence from God. However, the original translation means, "to miss the mark" of God's holy standard of righteousness. So if they all miss the mark, we can t possibly categorize them based on what we think are big or small. Take Adam and Eve for example. If you remove the sin out of the context, it looks as though they got in trouble for eating some fruit from a tree with a do not eat sign. However, it goes much deeper than that. The fall birthed from them was not just for eating fruit, but because of their disobedience to God s commandment. They had perfect fellowship with God until they disobeyed. Since then we are all born into sin and have a sin nature. We all have sinned and have fallen short, but why do we elevate one sin over the other? After all, some sins may seem like you just ate fruit from a tree with a do not eat sign, while others seem like the end of the world. A recent story we are all familiar with is the Ray Rice issue. After the video surfaced, I saw so many Christians spewing so much hate towards him. Why don t they have the same anger towards the grown women who beat each other up on prominent TV shows? Why is there not the same anger towards man on man violence? Why are adulterers treated worse than one who told a lie? Could it be that because of his wealth and status, what he did seems so atrocious? The fall of a prominent Pastor is plastered all over but the same fall committed by another Pastor in a small town with way fewer members is never heard of. And many other cases follow this same rule in society. Ones status and wealth seem to determine the anger towards the sin. But this is contradictory from what Jesus taught. When dealing with the woman caught in adultery, Jesus said, He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first. Everyone around them left and Jesus told her, Neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more. He didn t cast her out, sentence her to death, or punish her in any way. So why is it ok that we take away peoples livelihoods, destroy them, ban them and spew such hate towards they sin? Sin is sin and they all separate us from God no matter how small or big we may think they are. Let s measure sin by God s standards rather than societies. Pray for and love someone you know caught in sin, don t cast out, dismiss or hate. Bro. Ganiyu Abdul is the founding Pastor at Faithful-Won Ministries International in Aurora, CO. Their website is faithfulwon.org and he can be contacted at 719-287-4590. Chi Phi Speaks 5 Chiphiques.com
