Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, The season of Lent begins for us Christians on Wednesday, March 6 th. It is a season meant to deepen our relationship with the Lord Jesus through prayer, fasting, and serving those in need. At Edgewood we will focus on enriching our prayer life this Lenten season through use of the book of Psalms. The 150 Psalms in the Old Testament serve as a prayer book for God s people. In Hebrew, the word for psalm means praise. It is God who the psalmist praises with words of adoration, thanksgiving, confession, lament, and petition. The psalms are Spirit inspired words that can help us to pray when we struggle to put our thoughts and feelings into our own words to God. A devotional book entitled Lasting Hope will be available at the first of the month for every household. Each day of the week during Lent a verse or verses from the psalm appointed for the Sunday reading will be used as a focus for reflection and prayer. Then on Wednesday evenings we will gather for a simple soup supper (fasting?). The meal will be followed by a time where I will lead discussion on the week s psalm and provide input on the historical background of the psalm and a Christian interpretation of the text. We will conclude the evening with brief worship. I use the psalms rather extensively in my personal devotions, praying 15 psalms per week and thus getting through the 150 psalms about 5 times per year. My practice pales in comparison to the ancient practice among Christian monks and nuns in monasteries and convents who prayed the entire psalter every week! Having been a monk for many years leading up to the Reformation, Martin Luther had a deep love for the psalms and regarded the book of Psalms as a little Bible and a summary of the whole Bible. It is my prayer that by the end of the Lenten season you will have a greater appreciation for the psalms as a way of enriching your conversation with the Lord and deepening your love for our Savior Jesus Christ. A blessed Lent to you all! In Christ, Pastor Len There was no February Council meeting due to really bad weather, thus there will be no reports posted in the Scroll this month. Thank you, Mary Ash Wednesday March 6 Supper @ 6 pm Service @ 6: 45 pm

Big thank you to Pastor Len, Cindy, Mark Burgess, Karan Peterson, Sandy Blackwell, Joan Stockli and Roberta Lewis for making soup for sale on Super Bowl Sunday. We raised $200 for the Kids Food Basket. Thank you all. We are missing our snow birds and are having to double up on cleaning, fellowship etc. BIG thank you to those willing to step up, Studying John s Gospel. Session three: Friends for life in Christ: In this session, we meet a woman caught in adultery, a man born blind, and Jesus friends Mary, Martha and Lazarus. Through their stories, we come to see how Jesus meets us with mercy, healing and hope in the face of judgment, rejection and grief. We share in Jesus final conversation with his disciples before his arrest, where he shows us his love and prays for us. Lent is a time to reflect on what God gave up for us in His Son s suffering and death. Some of us do this by giving up something we hold dear. Here at Edgewood we would like you to reflect by giving of something instead of giving up something (or in addition to). We will provide you with a bag to take home. Each week we would like you to give an item we will designate to the food bank. Week 1 March 3 2 tubes of toothpaste Week 2 March10 a package of Bic shavers Week 3 March 17 a container of shaving cream Week 4 March 24 a bottle of shampoo Week 5 March 31 4 bars of bath soap Week 6 April 7 a pkg of toilet paper Please bring your filled bag to church on Palm Sunday, April 14. Thank you in advance. We are looking for a piano player for church to fill in for Kelly on her weeks off. If you know of anyone, please let Mark Hill know. Tues., March 19 @ 7 pm Suppers @ 6 pm Services @ 6:45 pm The book club meets at noon on the first Tuesday of month here at Edgewood. ALL women welcome. The March book is Masterpiece by Fiona Davis. The April book is Maid by Stephanie Land. Move your clocks forward Sat., March 12 @ midnight
