TOM'S PAGE Mean People Suck? I m sure you ve seen that bumper sticker around the valley the past couple of years. It s one that I ve always kind of shook my head at in agreement. I ve also kind of just categorized mean people as those who are week and insecure. After a recent event, my heart goes out to those who live their lives in a spirit of meanness. This past Sunday night just after we finished unloading the vehicles after Ski Trip, about 35 young men gathered in front of Cupertino High School for a serious gang bang. After all was said and done, we brought one young man who was stabbed in the back into Torvend Hall to wait for Paramedics, 10 or so cop cars, 1 fire truck and 1 ambulance were all over the front of our property and cruising surrounding streets. Another youth was badly beaten and questioned and detained by the police. (Special thanks to Beth Coleman, Emily Larsen and Laura Koenig for siting with Richard, our injured friend). We got the license plates and descriptions of about 1/2 dozen vehicles and hope that the legal system can be effective at identifying the gangs and prosecuting the perpetrators, but a change of heart is what is most needed. We all want so badly to be accepted, and that desire will drive us to all types of methods and into all kinds of groups. I know I m not that young, but I do remember my high school years quite well and I recall how hard it was to grow up dealing with the basics of school, parents, family, my girlfriend, work and what my future might look like. I NEVER had to worry if someone was going to stick a knife or broken bottle in my back. Last Sunday night has really heightened my awareness of how weakness, insecurity and hatred can so rapidly transform 35 individuals into a rush of chaos and destruction. Let s keep those guys, the evil of 9/11, and all who struggle with violence and meanness in our prayers. Peace starts within each of our hearts and it is our responsibility to reach out to those in need. Remember, Mean People are Children of God too. Peace, Tom Hoegel 11
