S T. J O H N L U T H E R A N C H U R C H ST. JOHN NEWS Volume 28 Issue 12 December Scuttlebutt In his book called Whistling in the Dark, Frederick Buechner writes, The house lights go off and the floodlights come on. Even the chattiest stop chattering as they wait in darkness for the curtain to rise. In the orchestra pit, the violin bows are poised. The conductor has raised his baton. The extraordinary thing that is about to happen is matched only by the extraordinary moment just before it happens. Advent is the name of that moment. Like concert goers waiting with anticipation for the first notes of beautiful music and the start of an experience the moves the soul, we eagerly await the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ as he comes to us in our worship, in bread and wine shared gathered around his table, in the waters of baptism, in the story of his humble birth that first Christmas, in the holy light of Christmas Eve candles, in the joy of Christmas morning gift giving, and in his promised return at the end of time. The Christian faith is founded on the past event of Jesus birth, death and resurrection, yet it is a faith that anticipates a future of wholeness, glory, and peace as God s kingdom is fully realized. As we live in the in-between times, we boldly confess the great truth of our faith as we proclaim, Christ has come, Christ is risen, Christ will come again! Both past truth and future hope impact the present, heightening the anticipation of the celebration of the miracle and mystery of Christ s birth and his coming again. Advent is a time for to ponder what is and what is to be. Advent is a time to anticipate God s mercy as it comes to a new every day. Advent is a time to prepare our hearts and minds for the arrival of our Savior. Enjoy a blessed Advent season as we await the coming of our Lord with great hope, peace, joy, and love. And, a very Merry Christmas to you and yours as we celebrate his birth!
