Introit: Hymns For Today 10 v 1, 2, 4 & 5 The Fourth Sunday After Epiphany Year C 3 rd February 2019 Green Prayer of the Day Righteous God, you confound the world s wisdom by giving your blessing to the lowly and pure in heart: give us such a hunger and thirst for justice and perseverance in striving for peace, that in our words and deeds the world may see the promise of your kingdom, which has been revealed in Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and for ever Amen. A reading from the book of Jeremiah, Chapter 1 beginning at Verse 4 Now the word of the Lord came to me saying, Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations. Then I said, Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy. But the Lord said to me, Do not say, I am only a boy ; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord. Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the Lord said to me, Now I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and over 2
kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant. [NRSV Jeremiah 1:4-10] Hear the word of the Lord thanks be to God Psalm 71:1-6 1 2 3 4 5 6 To you, Lord, have I come for shelter: let me never be put to shame. In your righteousness rescue and deliver me: incline your ear to me and save me. Be for me a rock of refuge, a fortress to defend me: for you are my high rock, and my stronghold. Rescue me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked: from the grasp of the pitiless and unjust. For you, Lord, are my hope: you are my confidence, O God, from my youth upward. On you have I leaned since my birth: you are he that brought me out of my mother s womb, and my praise is of you continually. A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians, Chapter 13 beginning at Verse 1 If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may 3
boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. Hear the word of the Lord, [NRSV 1 Corinthians 13:1-13] thanks be to God. Gradual:: Tis 693 v 1 & 4 The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke, Chapter 4 beginning at Verse 21 Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. Then he began to say to them, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, Is not this Joseph s son? He said to them, Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, Doctor, cure yourself! And 4
you will say, Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum. And he said, Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet s hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian. When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way. This is the Gospel of the Lord, Offertory: Tis 658 Post Communion: Tis 668 v 1 & 4 Final: Tis 215 v 1, 3 & 4 [NRSV Luke 4:21-30] praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. A Prayer for the Parish of Port Lincoln Father help us to be a Church that is a welcoming, caring, and meaningful community. A community which enjoys the celebration of the sacraments and has a passion to proclaim the Gospel of Christ. A community which reaches out to others, sharing the love of God with them. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen 5
Prayer of the Week O Lord, you have taught us that all our doings without love are worth nothing: send your Holy Spirit, and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love, the true bond of peace and of all virtues, without which whoever lives is counted dead before you; Grant this for your only Son Jesus Christ s sake. Amen Prayer for the Appointment of a Parish Priest Bountiful God, give to this parish a faithful pastor who will faithfully speak your word and minister your sacraments; an encourager who will equip your people for ministry and enable us to fulfil our calling. Give to those who will choose, wisdom, discernment and patience, and to us give warm and generous hearts, for Jesus Christ s sake. Amen For those with an ongoing need: Darren & Rachel, Arthur & Joyce R, Joyce H, Brian L, Brooke, Ryan, Donna, Kelly, Jan, Helen and Kimberly, Danielle. Remembering those who have joined God in the eternal life: Kerri Harris From A Worship and Prayer Book for MU Australia 2009: Jesus, Lord of life, by the power of your word and through the actions of love, call us to be your disciples. Give us strength to be different, to stand up for justice and peace and be signs of your reconciling love for all. Amen 6

We are but dust. Pray that we will faithfully do the work of ministry we are 7
called to this year, but that we will remember to trust God for the growth that only He can bring. Profile The heat is on, it s on our town. Exmouth is blessed with its oceanside location, but unlike many other places, we miss out on sea breezes so things are warm over summer. Praise God for aircon! Ministry takes a slower pace during summer, but we praise God for hospitality opportunities this time brings. Diocese of North West Australia The Rt Revd Gary Nelson The Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany [OS 4] Sunday 3 February 2019 Jeremiah 1.4-10; Psalm 71.1-6; 1 Corinthians 13.1-13; Luke 4.21-30 Sometimes the truth that God tells us through his word can be difficult for us to bear. Jesus told a difficult truth to the Jews in the Synagogue in his hometown. Deep within his message was the truth that God s love is for everyone and not just for the Jews demonstrated by his acts of healing and mercy to gentiles in difficult times. Today we can rest assured that, as surely as God formed us in the womb and knew us, he has a love for us that breaks down all barriers. Pray that God might break down the barriers of prejudice in our lives that we might show his love to all we meet. Give thanks for the Church of North India, remembering especially today their ministry in a predominantly non-christian context. Text: The Reverend Will Johnston Anglican Board of Mission, 2019 8
