He is considering a proposal to become our full time organist. Pastor Appreciation Month! Please join us for cake after the service. WORSHIP GUIDE Our worship is participatory. This guide will help you. The text that follows is called liturgy. Some parts are spoken or sung by worship leaders. Other parts are spoken or sung by the whole assembly. The parts spoken or sung by the whole assembly are identified with bold text. We will also sing some songs (or hymns). These songs are identified with a title and a song number. These songs may be found in one of three books or printed in this bulletin. These books are identified as follows: Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) the red book With One Voice (WOV) the blue book Worship and Praise (WP) the purple book Other instructions (when to stand) are printed in italic text or will be provided by a worship lead. 1

TODAY S WORSHIP We are in the middle of the season of Pentecost. During this time the texts we hear each Sunday are focused on Jesus words and actions concerning the kingdom of God. Today the texts come from Ezekiel and the Gospel according to Matthew. Speaking through the prophet Ezekiel, God states that a person s sin is based on the actions of that person and no one else and promises forgiveness to those who repent. The Gospel of Matthew tells us that after Jesus was questioned as to the source of his authority, he told a parable of two sons, one who did what his father asked and one who did not. 2

HOLY COMMUNION SETTING FOUR GATHERING PRELUDE Before the prelude, speak to one other. During the prelude, speak to God. During the service, listen for God to speak to you. During the week, let God speak through you. The Invitation of the Bell Announcements: Confession and Forgiveness All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. Silence is kept for reflection and self-examination. P: Gracious God, C: have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and given ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us again to you, and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen P: God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your 3

sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. C: Amen. Gathering Song: God is Here ELW 526 Greeting P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. Give us your grace to overcome them, keep us from those things that harm us, and guide us in the way of salvation, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. (please be seated) WORD Time with the Kid s Pastor Peggy White First Reading: Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32 AM: 1 The word of the LORD came to me: 2 What do you mean by repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children s teeth are set on edge? 3 As I live, says the Lord GOD, this proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel. 4 Know that all lives are mine; the life of the parent as well as the life of the child is mine: it is only the person who sins that shall die. 25 Yet you say, The way of the Lord is unfair. Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way unfair? Is it not your ways that are unfair? 26 When the righteous turn away from their righteousness and commit iniquity, they shall die for it; for the iniquity that they have committed they shall die. 27 Again, when the wicked turn away from the wickedness they 5

have committed and do what is lawful and right, they shall save their life. 28 Because they considered and turned away from all the transgressions that they had committed, they shall surely live; they shall not die. 29 Yet the house of Israel says, The way of the Lord is unfair. O house of Israel, are my ways unfair? Is it not your ways that are unfair? 30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, all of you according to your ways, says the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions; otherwise iniquity will be your ruin. 31 Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed against me, and get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? 32 For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, says the Lord GOD. Turn, then, and live. The word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God Psalm Reading Psalm 25:1-9 (read responsively) AM: 1 To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul. C: 2 My God, I put my trust in you; let me not be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me. AM: 3 Let none who look to you be put to shame; rather let those be put to shame who are treacherous. C: 4 Show me your ways, O LORD, and teach me your paths. AM: 5 Lead me in your truth and teach me, C: for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all the day long. 6 Remember, O LORD, your compassion and love, for they are from everlasting. AM: 7 Remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions; remember me according to your steadfast love and for the sake of your goodness, O LORD. C: 8 You are gracious and upright, O LORD; therefore you teach sinners in your way. 6

AM: 9 You lead the lowly in justice and teach the lowly your way. Gospel Acclamation God s Word is Our Great Heritage ELW 509 (please stand as you are able) 7

Text: Nikolair F.S.Grundrvig; tr. Ole G. Belsheim. Music: Martin Luther. Public Domain. Gospel Reading: Matthew 21:23-32 P: 23 When [Jesus] entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority? 24 Jesus said to them, I will also ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. 25 Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin? And they argued with one another, If we say, From heaven, he will say to us, Why then did you not believe him? 26 But if we say, Of human origin, we are afraid of the crowd; for all regard John as a prophet. 27 So they answered Jesus, We do not know. And he said to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 28 What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, Son, go and work in the vineyard today. 29 He answered, I will not ; but later he changed his mind and went. 30 The father went to the second and said the same; and he answered, I go, sir ; but he did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father? They said, The first. Jesus said to them, Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him. The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ (please be seated) 8

Sermon: Pastor Peggy White (Usher will come by and pick up your Prayer cards) Hymn of the Day: O Master, Let Me Walk with You ELW 818 Apostles Creed: (please stand as you are able) AM: Please join me in confessing our faith C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayers of Intercession AM: Open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we pray for the church, the world, and all of God s creation. A brief silence. AM: We pray for the mission of the gospel. ANNOUNCMENTS Social Concern of the Month is for the help and recovery of the victims of Hurricane Harvey "For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." - Romans 8:38-39 Hurricane Harvey, one of the most powerful storms to hit the United States in years, made landfall last night, threatening millions of our neighbors in Texas and Louisiana with heavy rain, wind and rising tides. The National Hurricane Center called the storm's effects "life-threatening, devastating and catastrophic" and predicted long periods of rain and flooding, along with massive power outages. While many have evacuated, significant damage is still expected, and thousands of people may be housed in shelters for extended periods of time. We have an opportunity to accompany our neighbors during and after this disaster, in Jesus Christ's name. IMPORTANT PLEASE, IF YOU ARE THE LAST PERSON TO LEAVE ON SUNDAY, BE SURE THAT ALL DOORS ARE CLOSED TIGHT. THEY WILL ALREADY BE LOCKED. 17
