We hope that you are uplifted by the Gospel at our worship service. We invite you to join us every Sunday. Please sign our guestbook in the entry. Preparation for Worship: Read Psalm 85 (Lutheran Service Book or Pew Bible) Opening Hymn: 664 Fight the Good Fight LSB 664 SERVICE OF THE WORD (Worship Supplement, p. 12) Invocation We invoke ( call upon ) the name of the one true God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. P In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. 1

Confession and Absolution We come before our Holy God recognizing that we are sinful and daily need His forgiveness. P We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve Him as His dear children. But we have disobeyed Him and deserve only His wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to Him and plead for His mercy. C Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against You and do not deserve to be called Your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy upon me according to Your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt. P God our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, He has removed your guilt forever. Through faith in Him, which was created in you by the Holy Spirit, you are His own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to His will. C Amen. Kyrie Latin for O Lord. We approach our Lord with a cry for help in all the needs of our earthly life. W.S. p. 13 Lord have mercy on us. Christ have mercy on us. Lord have mercy on us. Gloria in Excelsis Latin for Glory to God in the highest. W.S. p. 13 Glory to God, we give You thanks and praise; Of heav nly joy and peace on earth we sing. We worship You, to You our hearts we raise, Lord God, almighty Father, heav nly King. Lord Jesus Christ, the Father s only Son, You bore for us the load of this world s sin. O Lamb of God, Your glorious vict ry won, Receive our prayer, grant us Your peace within. Alone, O Christ, You only are the Lord, At God s right hand in majesty most high: Who with the Spirit worshiped and adored, With all the heav nly host we glorify. 2

Prayer of the Day P We pray: Almighty and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our weaknesses and stretch forth the hand of Your majesty to heal and defend us. We pray this through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. First Reading Psalm 85 (Responsive) (EHV) P You showed favor to your land, O LORD. You restored Jacob. C You removed the guilt of your people. You covered all their sin. P You put away all your wrath. You turned from your burning anger. C Restore us, O God who saves us. P Put an end to your indignation with us. C Will you be angry with us forever? P Will you extend your anger through all generations? C Will you not turn and revive us, so that your people may rejoice in you? P Show us your mercy, O LORD, C and give us your salvation. P I will hear what the true God, the LORD, will say. C He indeed speaks peace to his people, to his favored ones, P but do not let them turn to foolish ways. C Surely his salvation is near for those who fear him, so that glory may dwell in our land. P Mercy and truth meet together. C Righteousness and peace kiss each other. P Truth springs up from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven. C The LORD will indeed give good things, and our land will yield its harvest. 3

P Righteousness walks in front of him. C It prepares the way for his footsteps. Gospel Reading Luke 4:20-32 (EHV) P The Gospel reading is from Luke 4:20-32. C Sanctify us by Your truth, O LORD. Your Word is truth! [Jesus preaching in Nazareth, the town in which He had grown up.] 20 He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began to tell them, Today, this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. 22 They all spoke well of him and were impressed by the words of grace that came from his mouth. And they kept saying, Isn t this Joseph s son? 23 He told them, Certainly you will quote this proverb to me, Physician, heal yourself! Do here in your hometown everything we heard you did in Capernaum. 24 And he said, Amen I tell you: No prophet is accepted in his hometown. 25 But truly I tell you: There were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut for three years and six months, while a great famine came over all the land. 26 Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow of Zarephath, in Sidon. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was healed except Naaman the Syrian. 28 All those who were in the synagogue were filled with rage when they heard these things. 29 They got up and drove him out of the town. They led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he passed through the middle of them and went on his way. 31 He went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbath. 32 They were amazed by his teaching, because his message had authority. P Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and keep it! 4

Alleluia and Verse When God speaks to us in His Word it is natural for us to respond. We sing Allelujah! meaning, Praise the Lord! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! These words are written that we may believe That Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Apostles' Creed We boldly confess what we believe. W.S. p. 15 C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Hymn of the Day: 583 God Has Spoken By His Prophets LSB 583 Sermon Text: Jeremiah 1:4-10 (NKJV) 4 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying: 5 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations." 6 Then said I: "Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a 5

youth." 7 But the LORD said to me: "Do not say, 'I am a youth,' For you shall go to all to whom I send you, And whatever I command you, you shall speak. 8 Do not be afraid of their faces, For I am with you to deliver you," says the LORD. 9 Then the LORD put forth His hand and touched my mouth, and the LORD said to me: "Behold, I have put My words in your mouth. 10 See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms, To root out and to pull down, To destroy and to throw down, To build and to plant." Sermon Theme: I Can t God Can! What are some of your I Can ts! when it comes to God calling us to serve, or to walk according to His Word in your Christian life? How do God s words to Jeremiah, especially in v. 5 and v. 8 of our text also encourage and strengthen us? Application: Can you think of some other sections of God s Word that remind us God Can even when we can t? (see Phlippians 4:13; 2 Corinthians 12:9-10) Offertory W.S. p. 16 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence, Take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation. Uphold with Your Spirit free. Offering We offer our gifts to the Lord, remembering that He has first given to us that we might have to give to Him. 6

Sermon Hymn: If God Himself Be For Me LSB 724 v. 1, 2, 5, 8, 10 (tune of hymn 442 LSB) 1 If God Himself be for me, I may a host defy; For when I pray, before me My foes, confounded, fly. If Christ, my head and master, Befriend me from above, What foe or what disaster Can drive me from His love? 2 I build on this foundation, That Jesus and His blood Alone are my salvation, My true, eternal good. Without Him all that pleases Is valueless on earth; The gifts I have from Jesus Alone have priceless worth. 5 For no one can condemn me Or set my hope aside; Now hell no more can claim me: Its fury I deride. No sentence now reproves me, No guilt destroys my peace; For Christ, my Savior, loves me And shields me with His grace. 8 No danger, thirst, or hunger, No pain or poverty, No earthly tyrant s anger Shall ever vanquish me. Though earth should break asunder, My fortress You shall be; No fire or sword or thunder Shall sever You from me. 10 My heart with joy is springing; I am no longer sad. My soul is filled with singing; Your sunshine makes me glad. The sun that cheers my spirit Is Jesus Christ, my King; The heav n I shall inherit Makes me rejoice and sing. Public domain Prayer of the Church / Prayer Requests We bring our prayers to God. Lord s Prayer Benediction The blessing given by God for the blessing of His people (Numbers 6:24-26). Closing Hymn: Savior, I Follow On Hymn 422 v. 1, 4 TLH Savior, I follow on, Guided by Thee, Seeing not yet the hand That leadeth me. Hushed be my heart and still, Fear I no further ill, Only to meet Thy will My will shall be. Savior, I long to walk Closer with Thee; Led by Thy guiding hand, Ever to be Constantly near Thy side, Quickened and purified, Living for Him who died Freely for me.
