SHEPHERD OF THE DESERT EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH The Fourth Sunday after Epiphany February 2, 3, 2013 Created, Redeemed and Called by God, we reach out to all, by sharing our gifts and the unconditional love of Jesus.

Prelude Welcome to Worship at Shepherd of the Desert Please stand as you are able when noted. If Thou But Trust In God to Guide Thee Prelude and Fugue in G Minor Welcome and Ministry Moments Lois Mitchell, Organist Johann Walther Dietrich Buxtehude Invocation and Confession P Blessed be the holy Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. C Amen. A A C P C Sisters and brothers, bear with one another in love, maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace, and take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection. Holy and gracious God, we confess that we have not led a life worthy of the calling to which we have been called. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have not acted according to your will. We have grieved your Holy Spirit. Have mercy on us. Forgive us according to the riches of your grace. Make us holy and blameless before you in love, so that we might live to the praise of your glory. Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for you, and for his sake God forgives you all your sins. You who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. Amen. Sharing of the Peace P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you. Hymn O Zion Haste ELW 668 2

Litany on Psalm 71 A C A C A C In you, O LORD, have I taken refuge; let me never be put to shame. In your righteousness, deliver me and set me free; incline your ear to me and save me. Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe; you are my crag and my stronghold. Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the clutches of the evildoer and the oppressor. For you are my hope, O Lord GOD, my confidence since I was young. I have been sustained by you ever since I was born; from my mother's womb you have been my strength; my praise shall be always of you. Hymn of Praise Shine, Jesus Shine ELW 671 Prayer of the Day P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray together. C Almighty and ever-living God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and love; and that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Musical Offering (Sat.) Shepherd Singers Holy, Holy, Holy Jay Althouse (Sun.) Chancel Choir Holy, Holy, Holy Jay Althouse Esther Holte, Choir Accompanist 1st Reading Jeremiah 1:4-10 4Now the word of the LORD came to me saying, 5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations. 3

6Then I said, Ah, Lord GOD! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy. 7But the LORD said to me, "Do not say, 'I am only a boy'; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you. 8Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD. 9Then the LORD put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the LORD said to me, Now I have put my words in your mouth. 10See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant. L The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. 2nd Reading 1 Corinthians 13:1 13 If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. 7It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. 9 For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; 10 but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; 4

then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. L The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. They said, "Is not this Joseph's son? 23 He said to them, Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, Doctor, cure yourself! And you will say, Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum. 24 And he said, Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet's hometown. 25 But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; 26yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. 27 There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian. 28 When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. 30 But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way. Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayers of the Gathered Community A Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. Offering (Sunday) God, Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens Offertory Prayer (Sunday) Wilbur Held Invitation to the Table P Holy God, mighty Lord, gracious Father: Endless is your mercy and eternal your reign. You have filled all creation with light and life; heaven and earth are full of your glory. We praise you for the grace shown to your people in every age: the promise to Israel, the rescue from Egypt, the gift of the promised land, the words of the prophets; and, at this end of all the ages, the gift of your Son, who proclaimed the good news in word and deed and was obedient to your will, even to giving his life. 6

We welcome Paula Sturgeon to our pulpit today. Paula's life was picture perfect until juvenile rheumatoid arthritis changed everything. She presents her story in her trademark style: intensely personal, genuine, often self-effacing, and sometimes hilarious. She will be available to sign her book after services in the Narthex on Saturday and in Walton Hall on Sunday. Cost of book is $15. Please continue to bring in coupons & box tops. Give them to the church office. A big Thank You to all who bought chances on our four quilts at the Christmas Pot Luck in December. Through your generosity we collected $264 to buy batting or supplies to make the quilts. These quilts are donated to Eve s Place for battered women or to World Relief. We welcome any cotton material or good sheets to work with. The quilts are made entirely from donations. So we say Thank You as you bless us with donations and we send the finished blessing on their way. You are a part of all of this.
