DEDICATED TO THE STUDENTS OF CHRIST COVENANT SCHOOL

USING THIS TEACHER S GUIDE OVERVIEW Investigating God s Word...At School is a Bible curriculum designed for Christian schools, grades 1st-5th. Each unit provides material for 9 weeks, divided into four lessons each week. More specifically, each lesson is designed to be taught over two days, in 30-40 minute teaching blocks. This Bible curriculum also includes Scripture memory. DISTINCTIVES This Bible curriculum is unique in the following ways: (1) It teaches the entirety of God s Word, from Genesis to Revelation, over the course of five years. (2) It teaches the students how to study God s Word for themselves. (3) It includes daily quizzes in order to help the students build their Bible knowledge. (4) It teaches the students a Word of the Week each lesson to build their vocabularies. (5) Each lesson puts the texts of Scripture in historical context, teaching the children that the Bible is real history. (6) It trains the students to apply God s Word to their lives. (7) It systematically inculcates a Biblical worldview, training children to think Biblically. (8) It gives the students tools to defend their faith in Christ. COMPONENTS DAY ONE Each 2-day lesson begins with a lesson overview to give you the big picture of the Scripture being studied. It also includes a brief preparation section and a teaching encouragement to help get you started. Introduction. Each Day One starts with an introduction to the lesson. Younger children will be asked a question to provoke their thinking. Older children will be taught a Psalm or Proverb of the day to call them to study. Quiz Time. Next, the students are quizzed in order to train them to remember what they have learned. These quizzes will often cover what they learned the day before, but sometimes will cover material elsewhere in God s Word that they should already know. Major knowledge areas like the Ten Commandments, Days of Creation, etc., may be quizzed more often. It is recommended that your children write out the answers to the quiz and keep them in a Bible study journal. W.O.W! The W.OW! is the Word of the Week. Each lesson will introduce the students to a vital Biblical vocabulary word. These words are either found in the Scripture text itself, or they are important theological words that the children need to learn. The W.O.W! often provides the theme for the entire lesson. Historical Context. Each lesson, the Scripture text is placed in historical context by use of a timeline. It is essential that the children learn how the story of redemptive history fits together. Bible stories must not be viewed as detached scenes they are to be shown as a part of a much bigger picture. The timeline is a useful tool toward that end. Bible Investigation. The Bible Investigation time is the heart and soul of each day s lesson. It plunges the student directly into God s Word, not simply a paraphrase of a Bible story. All Scripture texts included in he curriculum are from the English Standard Version (ESV). The Bible reading is taken in short sections, separated by times of discussion, questions, and application points. This format allows ample opportunities to stop, think about and discuss what is being read. P6 // SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIY 3

Scripture Memory. At the end of each Day One of the two-day lesson, the students will be taught a Scripture memory verse. These memory texts will be connected to what was studied that day. And, since you will cover two lessons each week, the students will be memorizing two passages a week twice as much as most memory programs. COMPONENTS DAY TWO Day Two components include several Day One components, and add two very exciting sections to the study. Quiz Time. Day Two begins with a quiz. These quizzes are most often an intensive review of Day One material. Again, it is recommended that your children write out the answers to the quiz and keep them in a Bible study journal. Historical Context. As you prepare to read the Scripture, you will again have the opportunity to put it in historical context for the students. The timeline will visually demonstrate where you are in God s Word. Bible Investigation. Again, this is the heart and soul of each day s Bible time. Your students will learn how to study God s Word for themselves, as they read, answer questions, discuss, and apply the Bible to their lives. Worldview Builder. This component is found only in Day Two of each lesson. It has been created because of the need for our children to develop Christian worldviews. Developing a Christian worldview is the task of learning to look at everything in life through the lens of Scripture. It is being trained by the Holy Spirit and the Bible to think Biblically for the glory of God. particular pillar on the board, the students will be asked to list things about that truth that they learned in the lesson. Defend the Faith. A necessary component of a Bible curriculum is training our children how to defend the Christian faith. It is not good enough to give them Bible knowledge they must learn how to answer questions about what they believe and why they believe it. To that end, this section will present the students with a question that they will have to answer. You will also teach them the right answer after they have a chance to share their thoughts. This will begin the training of answering the skeptics and their attacks on Christianity. Scripture Memory. The day s lesson ends with a review of the Scripture memory passage. You may use any method to help the students put it to memory. AND FINALLY... Teaching God s Word is unlike any other subject that you teach in school. It is the only book that is inspired by God! It is the only text that truly changes lives, by the power of the Holy Spirit. So teach it with great passion and excitement, as well as great care. When you teach the Bible you are giving your students the greatest treasure they can ever possess! The Worldview Builder section helps the students to connect what they are studying to a pillar of a Christian worldview. The four main pillars that are used in this study are: Creation, Providence, Rationality, and the Fear of God. After putting the SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIT 3 // P7

LESSON 1 // JUDGES 6 OVERVIEW Judges 6 introduces us to Gideon, the next deliverer of Israel. After forty years of peace, the Israelites once again rebel against the LORD. God sends the Midianites in to torment Israel, driving the people into mountain caves and other hideouts. When Israel cries out to the LORD for help, the LORD sends a prophet first to remind Israel about what God had done and how Israel had sinned against Him. God s Word is needed to bring about repentance! Then the LORD, through His angel, enlists Gideon as the next deliverer of Israel. Gideon doubts that the LORD is with Israel, so he asks for a sign. The angel brings fire from a rock to burn up an offering. Gideon is convinced and obeys God by destroying shrines to Baal and Asherah. The townspeople want to kill Gideon, but his idol-worshiping father steps in, telling them to let Baal take care of himself! The Spirit of the LORD again calls upon Gideon to fight the Midianites and defeat them. Gideon needs more signs to believe the LORD. Graciously, God miraculously gives Gideon both wet and dry fleeces as a sign that He is with Gideon. Gideon is now filled with courage to fight for God s people. PREPARATION Read over and meditate on Judges 6 this week. TEACHING ENCOURAGEMENT It is tempting to criticize Gideon for his fear and lack of faith. Three times over, he needed signs from the LORD to convince him that the LORD would do as He said. Yet didn t Gideon have some pretty realistic things to fear? The Midianites were severely oppressing God s people, seemingly too powerful to overcome. Instead of focusing on Gideon s lack of faith, show your students the amazing love and grace of God! Our God is willing to stoop down and to condescend to His fearful people. God is so great that He does not lose His sovereignty and majesty when He chooses to serve His people. His love builds our faith, giving us courage to do what He commands. Gideon needed the grace of miraculous signs. Help your students know that they can serve a God who will clearly show them that He is with them! LESSON SCHEDULE Day One INTRODUCTION Psalm 67:1-2 2 3 mins. QUIZ TIME Moses and Joshua 3 5 mins. DAY ONE INTRODUCTION Begin by reading Psalm 67:1-2. 1 May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, Selah 2 that your way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations. Say: As sinful people, we need God s grace and blessing. Without God s grace, we are stuck in our sins, just like the Israelites were. But if you were listening closely to this psalm, you heard another reason why we need God s grace so that salvation can be brought to all the nations. God s people are to follow the LORD so that we can be a witness to others. That s why we learn God s Word too so we can share it with others. So are you ready to study today? QUIZ TIME Now, let s move on to QUIZ TIME. Today s questions: Who led God s people out of Egypt? What did God do for Moses to show him that He was with Moses? Who led God s people into the Promised Land? How did God show Joshua that He was with him before the Israelites went to Jericho? Answers: 1. Moses. 2. Spoke to him from a burning bush; made his rod turn into a snake; made his hand have leprosy. 3. Joshua. 4. The commander of the LORD s army appeared to him. Say: Both Moses and Joshua learned that God was with them. Even the Israelites had the glory cloud of the LORD leading them to the Promised Land, showing them that God was in their midst. Is God still with His people today? P10 // SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIT 3 // LESSON 1

W.O.W! Our Word of the Week is SIGN. Write it on the board. That s an easy word, isn t it? Who can tell me what a SIGN is? Allow answers. The word SIGN in the Bible can mean several different things. For example, the rainbow was a SIGN that God would never destroy the earth with a flood again. So a SIGN can be something that reminds us of something else. In our lesson today, we will see another meaning of the word SIGN. A SIGN can be a miracle that only God can do. In Bible times, many people would ask God for a SIGN so that they would know that God actually spoke to them. Remember, God gave Mo-ses several miraculous SIGNS that proved to Moses that it was tru-ly God speaking to him. Do you and I need a SIGN to truly know that God is real and is always with us? Well, guess what? He has already given us that miraculous SIGN. We will talk about that SIGN soon pay attention and look for some SIGNS in our lesson today! BIBLE INVESTIGATION P12 // SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIT 3 // LESSON 1 Introduction: We begin our studies this nine weeks right where we left off in the Book of Judges. Remember, after the LORD saved Israel from the Canaanites, we read that the land had peace for forty years. What was the name of the last judge (who was a prophetess)? [Deborah.] Deborah sang a song praising God for His deliverance. Do you think the people will now turn back to the LORD? Let s find out. Read Judges 6:1. 1 The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD gave them into the hand of Midian seven years. Discussion: Did forty years of peace from enemies make the Israelites worship God again? [No!] Again, they did evil in the eyes of the LORD, rejecting Him again. What was their consequence? [The Midianites now captured them.] Listen to how bad it was for Israel now. Read verses 2-6. 2 And the hand of Midian overpowered Israel, and because of Midian the people of Israel made for themselves the dens that are in the mountains and the caves and the strongholds. 3 For whenever the Israelites planted crops, the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East would come up against them. 4 They would encamp against them and devour the produce of the land, as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance in Israel and no sheep or ox or donkey. 5 For they would come up with their livestock and their tents; they would come like locusts in number both they and their camels could not be counted so that they laid waste the land as they came in. 6 And Israel was brought very low because of Midian. And the people of Israel cried out for help to the LORD. Discussion: That s pretty awful, isn t it? The Midianites tormented God s people so much that they hid in caves and mountain clefts just to be safe. Midian wiped Israel out! After suffering for awhile, what did Israel do? [They cried out to the LORD for help.] Will the LORD help them? Let s see. Read verses 7-10. 7 When the people of Israel cried out to the LORD on account of the Midianites, 8 the LORD sent a prophet to the people of Israel. And he said to them, Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: I led you up from Egypt and brought you out of the house of slavery. 9 And I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out before you and gave you their land. 10 And I said to you, I am the LORD your God; you shall not fear the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But you have not obeyed my voice.

Discussion: The people asked for help from the LORD, but He did not send a deliverer, did He? He sent a prophet. What did the prophet do? [He spoke God s Word to the people, reminding them of how God had already saved them and they rebelled.] So, the first thing Israel needed was a reminder of what God had done for them already! Application: When we get in trouble, it is easy for us to just cry for help. But, the best help we can get is the Word of God! Our best help is to be reminded about who God is and what He has already done for us! God s Word is our help in times of trouble! Let s see what happens next. Read verses 11-13. 11 Now the angel of the LORD came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, while his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites. 12 And the angel of the LORD appeared to him and said to him, The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor. 13 And Gideon said to him, Please, sir, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? But now the LORD has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian. Discussion: Now we are introduced to a man named Gideon. An angel appears to him and tells him that the LORD is with him. What great news! But, Gideon doesn t think the LORD is really with His people. Why not? [Because of their suffering under the hand of Midian.] Gideon thinks God has abandoned His people. But, we know that Israel has really abandoned God, right? Application: When times are tough, you may also think that God has left you. But God is always with His people even in the really hard times that we often bring upon ourselves! Let s keep reading. Read verses 14-15. 14 And the LORD turned to him and said, Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you? 15 And he said to him, Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father s house. Discussion: Did Gideon trust the LORD? [No.] He saw himself as weak and unable to save Israel from Midian. But God is sending him! Don t you think God will give him strength? SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIT 3 // LESSON 1 // P13

Let s read one last section for today. Read verses 16-18. 16 And the LORD said to him, But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man. 17 And he said to him, If now I have found favor in your eyes, then show me a sign that it is you who speak with me. 18 Please do not depart from here until I come to you and bring out my present and set it before you. And he said, I will stay till you return. Discussion: Did you hear our Word of the Week? Why did Gideon ask for a SIGN? [He wanted to know if it was really the LORD talking to him.] Gideon found favor, or grace, in the eyes of the LORD. What sort of SIGN will the LORD give Gideon? Then do you think He will believe? Conclusion: God calls you and me to trust in Him. Our great SIGN of God s faithfulness is the cross of Jesus Christ. It points us to the FACT that Jesus died for the sins of His people. Think about that, and we ll continue our lessons about Gideon next time. We ll see if he believes when He is given a SIGN! SCRIPTURE MEMORY Read the Scripture Memory verse (Isaiah 7:14) together. Isaiah 7:14 (ESV) 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Say: Do you hear that? The virgin Mary gave birth to a son that is our SIGN. Jesus was also given the name Immanuel. What does the name Immanuel mean? [God with us.] Jesus is the SIGN that God is with us. What a miracle. What a Savior! God will use Gideon to save His people from the Midianites. God also chose Jesus to save His people from sin and death! Review the verse a couple of times. Close in prayer. P14 // SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIT 3 // LESSON 1

DAY TWO QUIZ TIME Let s begin today with QUIZ TIME. Are you ready? Today s questions: Who visited Gideon? What did the angel first tell Gideon? How did Gideon reply to the angel? Who was oppressing Israel at the time of Gideon? What did the LORD tell Gideon to do? Answers: 1. An angel of the Lord. 2. The LORD is with you, mighty warrior. 3. If the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? 4. The Midianites. 5. Go in the might you have and save Israel out of Midian s hands. Did Gideon believe the LORD? [Not at first.] What did Gideon ask for? [A SIGN.] We will read more about Gideon today. HISTORICAL CONTEXT Point out the following timeline to give the students some historical context. BIBLE INVESTIGATION Introduction: The Israelites are in need of another deliverer a judge who can save them from the Midianites. God has called Gideon to be that man. But Gideon is having a hard time believing the LORD. So he has asked for a SIGN. We continue our reading in Judges 6 with the angel of the LORD waiting for Gideon. Let s read. Read Judges 6:19-21. 19 So Gideon went into his house and prepared a young goat and unleavened cakes from an ephah of flour. The meat he put in a basket, and the broth he put in a pot, and brought them to him under the terebinth and presented them. 20 And the angel of God said to him, Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and put them on this rock, and pour the broth over them. And he did so. 21 Then the angel of the LORD reached out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes. And fire sprang up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes. And the angel of the LORD vanished from his sight. Discussion: That was quite an amazing SIGN, wasn t it? Fire from a rock, burning up the offering. Do you think Gideon now believed this was the LORD talking to Him through His angel? Let s see. Read verses 22-24. 22 Then Gideon perceived that he was the angel of the LORD. And Gideon said, Alas, O Lord GOD! For now I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face. 23 But the LORD said to him, Peace be to you. Do not fear; you shall not die. 24 Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD and called it, The LORD Is Peace. To this day it still stands at Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites. Discussion: Did Gideon now believe this was the LORD? [Yes.] And he even called Him Sovereign LORD, recognizing that He is in control of all things. What did the LORD say to Gideon? [Peace. Do not fear. You are not going to die.] Standing in the presence of the LORD could mean death, since God is perfectly holy. Instead, the LORD had mercy on Gideon. Application: What did Gideon do in response to this? [He built an altar to the LORD and worshiped Him.] The only right response to God s work in our lives is worship! Let s see what the LORD tells Gideon to do. Read verses 25-27. 25 That night the LORD said to him, Take your father s bull, and the P16 // SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIT 3 // LESSON 1

second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is beside it 26 and build an altar to the LORD your God on the top of the stronghold here, with stones laid in due order. Then take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah that you shall cut down. 27 So Gideon took ten men of his servants and did as the LORD had told him. But because he was too afraid of his family and the men of the town to do it by day, he did it by night. Discussion: Gideon s own father worshiped idols. God told Gideon to destroy his father s idols so that there would only be an altar to the LORD at his home. Did Gideon follow God s command? [Yes.] Let s read more. Read verses 28-31. 28 When the men of the town rose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah beside it was cut down, and the second bull was offered on the altar that had been built. 29 And they said to one another, Who has done this thing? And after they had searched and inquired, they said, Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing. 30 Then the men of the town said to Joash, Bring out your son, that he may die, for he has broken down the altar of Baal and cut down the Asherah beside it. 31 But Joash said to all who stood against him, Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? Whoever contends for him shall be put to death by morning. If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because his altar has been broken down. Discussion: Did you catch that? Men wanted to kill Gideon because he destroyed their idol. Gideon s father stopped them by saying that Baal can defend himself! Will the false god Baal hurt Gideon? No way! False gods have NO power only God does. Watch now for another SIGN! Read verses 34-38. 34 But the Spirit of the LORD clothed Gideon, and he sounded the trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called out to follow him. 35 And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh, and they too were called out to follow him. And he sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, and they went up to meet them. 36 Then Gideon said to God, If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said, 37 behold, I am laying a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece alone, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said. 38 And it was so. morning and squeezed the fleece, he wrung enough dew from the fleece to fill a bowl with water. Discussion: Gideon asked for another SIGN from God. What was it this time? [He asked for a wool fleece to be wet even when the ground was dry.] Did God perform this miraculous sign for Gideon? [Yes.] Will Gideon now trust that God will lead him? Let s see. Read verses 39-40. 39 Then Gideon said to God, Let not your anger burn against me; let me speak just once more. Please let me test just once more with the fleece. Please let it be dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground let there be dew. 40 And God did so that night; and it was dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground there was dew. Discussion: Gideon needed one more SIGN, didn t he? This one was even more amazing a dry fleece when all the ground was wet. That s just impossible! So we know that God must have done it. Isn t God gracious to Gideon? Conclusion: We will read more about Gideon next time. But, I told you earlier that we Christians have been given a SIGN that God is with us. Our SIGN is actually a person who came and lived and died for our sins. Who is that SIGN that God is with us for all time? [Jesus Christ.] We don t need fleeces because we have Jesus. We have Jesus Christ crucified as our SIGN that God is with us and He will save us. This is the gospel, boys and girls! P18 // SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIT 3 // LESSON 1

WORLDVIEW BUILDER Say: It s time to use what we have learned in God s Word this week to build our Christian minds. God has given us minds to think rightly and to believe the TRUTH. Draw the Fear of God pillar on the board. We will be building on our Fear of God pillar today. To fear God is to love Him, honor and worship Him, and obey Him. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom! So, what things did we learn about the FEAR OF GOD in Judges 6? Assist your students to think of the following truths (connect them to the pillar on the board): FEAR OF GOD 1. The Israelites did not fear God, so the Midianites enslaved them. 2. The LORD gave Gideon multiple signs which caused Gideon to worship Him. 3. Gideon tore down idols out of the fear of God. 4. Gideon began to obey God. The LORD was certainly faithful to Gideon as He called him to be Israel s deliverer. Gideon needed signs to believe God, but then he followed Him. God calls each of you to fear Him and worship Him alone! DEFEND THE FAITH Say: Now, it s time to build our defenses up. You and I must always be prepared to defend and protect our faith in Jesus Christ. Just remember what the apostle Peter said: I Peter 3:15 (ESV) 15 Always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you Let s get more PREPARED to give answers about the hope we have in Jesus Christ! Let me ask you a question and see how you do SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIT 3 // LESSON 1 // P19

Q: How does Jesus strengthen our faith? In order to follow Jesus, God must give us faith to believe. Yet, Christians also need renewed faith every day in order to follow Jesus. Gideon had his faith strengthened by amazing signs from the LORD. So how do Christians today have their faith in the Lord strengthened? Allow answers. Make sure the children have these elements in their answer: A: As sinful people, we need our faith renewed every day. The LORD has given us the Holy Spirit to strengthen us each day. He has given us the Bible to strengthen our faith. And He has given us the gift of prayer to strengthen our faith. Only by keeping our eyes on Jesus will we be strong in the faith! Say: We are weak people, boys and girls. The sooner you learn that, the sooner you will call on the LORD to be your strength. You need Him to be able to come to faith in Christ, and you need Him to renew that faith every day! SCRIPTURE MEMORY Write this lesson s Scripture Memory verse (Isaiah 7:14) on the board. Isaiah 7:14 (ESV) 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Use any method to review the verse with your students. Close in prayer. P20 // SECOND GRADE TEACHER S MANUAL // UNIT 3 // LESSON 1
