No, Not One There s not a friend like the lowly Jesus, None else could heal all our soul s diseases, Jesus knows all about our struggles, He will guide till the day is done; There s not a friend like the lowly Jesus, No friend like Him is so high and holy, And yet no friend is so meek and lowly, There s not an hour that He is not near us, No night so dark but His love can cheer us, Did ever saint find this Friend forsake him? Or sinner find that He would not take him? Was e er a gift like the Savior given? Will He refuse us a home in heaven? Doxology Praise God from Whom all blessings flow Praise Him, all creatures here below Praise Him above, ye heavenly hosts Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost
Scripture: Luke 4:16-19 16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: 18 The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor.
Sermon Notes Anointed for a Selfless Assignment Luke 4:16-19
Spiritual Growth Challenge February 2016: Love Week 1 Practice Dates: January 31 st February 6 th Text: Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. (1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NIV) Thought: This chapter forms an integral part of Paul's discussion of spiritual gifts. The church at Corinth had tried to magnify some of the gifts. Paul affirms all the gifts and sets bounds on their function and purpose in gathered worship. A major test of spiritual gifts is, "Are they exercised in love?" This beautiful description of the nature and effects of love is meant to show the Corinthians that their conduct had, in many respects, been in contrast to it--just the same as our conduct is at times today. Charity is the utter enemy to selfishness; it does not desire or seek its own praise or honor or profit or pleasure. Charity never seeks its own to the detriment or neglect of others. It prefers the welfare of others to its private advantage. The Greek term agape means love. In the Old Testament, God established covenant love. In many ways agapē expresses the concept of covenant love by paralleling it with "the Kingdom of God." We know that God is love. As such, by substituting God for the word Love in the passage listed above, it would read as follows: God is patient, God is kind. God does not envy, etc. Clearly, the substituted passage is as true about God as it is about love-- being that they are one in the same. Task: Putting Yourself on Blast As Christians, we aspire to be Christ-like, therefore if we insert our own names in place of the word love in the passage, it should still be true. On a separate piece of paper write out the text and substitute your name for the word love. is patient, is kind. does not envy, etc. Review the passage above, with your name inserted and circle the phrases that you agree are true. Use a different color pen or highlighter to indicate the areas where there is room for improvement. During this week, work on the highlighted areas (in need of improvement) on a daily basis. At the end of the week, rewrite (with your name inserted) and then read your personalized passage and circle all the phrases you agree are true. Compared to the start of the week, do you see improvement? Improvement (not perfection) is the point of this exercise. A Time to Pray: Thank you God for loving me unconditionally. Thank you Father, for your son Christ, the perfect love sacrifice. Thank you Jesus, for your example of perfect love here on earth. Thank you Holy Spirit, for your loving influence and guidance. Father God help me to be patient and kind; help me not to envy or boast. Help me, Oh Lord, not to be proud or dishonor others. Holy Spirit, help me not to be selfseeking or easily angered; empower me to keep no record of wrongs and not to delight in evil, but rejoice with the truth. In the name of Jesus I pray to always protect; in the name of Jesus I pray to always trust; in the name of Jesus I pray to always hope; and in the name of Jesus I pray to always persevere. In Christ s Holy name I humbly pray. Amen. SERVE AND GROW!
