Walking AMAZED with God By Pam Patterson, Executive Director Early this January I was spending my quiet time with God asking Him what His plan is for Agape House this year. I truly believe He is leading us to expand, but I haven t known if it is to be the Junior High Home, expansion of the Transitional Living Home (TLH), or open a Boys Home and School. In November, both the Teen Home and the TLH had a waiting list. In my heart, and in speaking with people in the area I also know there is a great need for an Agape House for boys. As I was praying, I saw a vision of a beautiful maze with high green hedges. On the hedges were beautiful cascading flowers and around the corners were waterfalls and fountains, gardens and ponds. Birds were flying overhead; it was beautiful and peaceful. I heard God say Take my hand and trust me to lead you through the maze on the path I have for you. Enjoy the journey and the beauty all around you. You are always so worried about the destination and getting there that you forget to slow down. Enjoy my presence and trust Me to lead you. I pictured myself walking with Him, talking and enjoying the beautiful surroundings, but then I started feeling anxious. I asked, What if I make a wrong turn and hit a dead end? What if I make a mistake and it costs others and the ministry? I then heard Him say Again, slow down and trust Me, hitting a dead end or making a wrong turn is not the end of the world. I am bigger than any mistake you can make. Sometimes part of the journey is dead ends and wrong turns, but even if they are not, I can turn all things around for good. It is overwhelming you to worry about everything and carry the weight. This is My ministry and I can make all things right. Trust Me to lead you by day and night just like Moses trusted Me to lead him and the Israelites through the desert, and I promise you that you will reach your promised land. Right now, I do not know exactly where God is leading us, but I do believe we will be expanding and I am trusting Him to amaze me on this journey through the maze of life and ministry. February, 2018 You hedge me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. Psalm 139:4-10 THIS YEAR IN THE HOME 10 girls in the home, 5 girls are returning students, 1 day-student and 4 in the TLH. 2 girls started Drivers Ed. at Big Foot High School. Many outings and activities. The most popular outings are swimming and coffee houses. Many scheduled activities during the week, including gym class, bible studies, youth group, book and therapy groups. Extra staff has been a huge blessing in the home. Spiritual, emotional growth and progress in the second-year students. Consistently healthy menu plans.

P a ge 2 Let our heart beats echo We are loved. By Hillary Jones, Agape RA In this day, this season, miracles will grow within, unfurl, bear fruit. And the heart that makes time and space for Him to come will be a glorious place. A place of sheer, radiant defiance in the face of a world careening mad and stressed. Because each day of Advent, we will actively wait. We will wait knowing that the remaking of everything has already begun" - Ann Voskamp B e au t y A ga pe Connection F o r a s h e s By Hailee Middleton, Agape Angel Today I value the gift of reflecting on this season of life and the places in my heart that feel such deep gratitude. These past five months I ve had the honor of walking alongside some of the most brave, open, strong, and gentle young women. It's truly amazing to see each of these girls walk through their own journey of healing, and discover deeper truths about their identity, their stories, and how they discover the courage to learn their voices. In the pursuit of living within the beauty of grace, power lies in the vulnerability of allowing Jesus to meet us where we are. So often that means allowing ourselves to wrestle with life's losses, the breaking of our hearts, the thoughts that swirl in our minds, and the breaking of the dawn that awaits us in perfect, sweet grace. I love how Brennan Manning describes grace in his book Abba's Child: the Cry of the Heart for Intimate Belonging, in which he expresses, "To live by grace means to acknowledge my whole life story, the light side and the dark. In admitting my shadow side I learn who I am and what God's grace means. Define yourself radically as one beloved by God. This is the true self." His grace goes beyond our moments in which we feel overwhelmed. Grace will always speak calm as we learn to invite the Lord into our storms. Intertwined with grace I believe one of the greatest gifts the Lord has shown me is the raw healing in the power of His love. The essence of the Greek word "Agape" is compassion, unconditional, selflessness, and willful delight in the object of love. This love involves faithfulness, commitment, and an act of the will. It is distinguished from other types of love by its lofty moral nature and strong character. This love means seeing that these girls are incredibly precious and it means always choosing to speak that truth over them. To live with gentle hearts and strong minds. It is this love that creates the foundation for healing. Love says I see you, love says I believe in you, and love says healing is real. He walks with us through the darkness and comes out with us proclaiming that we are called into eternal victory. He is a God that calls us to reckless abandon and comes alongside as we give Him that place of trust, of walking in His hope. Everyday my heart grows for these precious girls. I challenge them to surrender to love. That is the art of giving our hearts to God so brick by brick these walls can fall, and remembering our hearts still beat and hope flows in our veins. We all have a different journey as we find our voices, recognize we are loved, we have purpose, and learn the simple beauty of being human. In every moment we have the freedom to proclaim His victory in our lives, and He never fails to provide abundant grace as each girl discovers the power of His love. My heart is constantly reminded of the promise of life in Isaiah 61:2-3, "To proclaim the year of the Lord's favor, to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor. Let our heart beats echo that we are loved. We are healing. We are free. Today and in this season, let's celebrate that we are so deeply called into His grace and victory. Let us celebrate the power of sisterhood as we experience joy. That we can trust Him in our places of growing and walk confidently on His foundation of love. Psalm 107:17-21 says, Some of you were sick because you d lived a bad life, your bodies feeling the effects of your sin. You couldn t stand the sight of food so miserable you thought you d be better off dead. Then you called out to God in your desperate condition He got you in the nick of time. He spoke the word that healed you, that pulled you back from the brink of death. So, thank God for his marvelous love for his miracle mercy to the children He loves. (The Message Bible) I first arrived at Agape two years ago. I came in and dealt with some of my surface problems like the physical and emotional abuse of my alcoholic and drug addicted father and the anger I had for my mom not leaving him. I came to Agape struggling with a major drug problem, self-harm, depression, anxiety and highly suicidal. When I left I felt free inside and I was actually happy. My relationship with God was strong. Last year a huge tragedy struck my life. I got the news that my dad had died in a drug house. It had been four years since I saw him last. Not long after that I got back into drugs, sex, robbing people, hanging out with gang affiliated people, and skipping school. My life was a mess all over again. My grief and problems were working together to unlock a secret I held deep inside me. As a young child I was molested by multiple people. I was angry at the world and God but I had reached a point where I needed help. I needed a way out. What I was doing and who I was wasn t me. I was not who I wanted to be. When I called Agape they opened their doors to me once again. They have given me nothing but unconditional love and support God has been taking me on a journey of healing recently. It is a journey of remem-

A ga pe Connection P a ge 3 APRIL IS National Volunteer Appreciation Month For many, April brings thoughts of taxes, April Fool s Day, showers and the hope of May flowers, but for us at Agape it is a time to celebrate all those who selflessly donate their time to make Agape a home for our girls. Without the hours of dedication to mentoring, office work, making and serving lunches, maintenance, cleaning, tutoring, and the list goes on and on, we would not be able to do what we do. Thank you volunteers for another year of awesome sacrificial service. Beauty for Ashes bering, forgiving, and feeling. It s all the things I can t do on my own. It s not easy by any means. I ve had my bad days where God has shined a light of truth on things I d rather forget and I just break down and flip out. Every time I do there has always been an Agape staff member by my side. I have given them all a run for their money. I ve tested them and pushed them away countless times but every time I did they would let me know that they aren t going to hurt me and showed me over and over again that they are there to help me in this difficult journey. God has shown me so much about myself recently. I can t even begin to explain how loving and merciful God has been throughout my healing process. The way I see my future now is completely different. Before I came to Agape my dream of becoming a counselor seemed so far away and impossible. I m now graduating early and with the love and support I have found at Agape I will be starting college in September. I thank God for all the mercy, grace and unconditional love He has poured out on me. Yoga teacher stays and shares lunch with fellow volunteers. Lowell paints our hallways. Have a special interest?
