LIVING AS STEWARDS He instructed them to take nothing for the journey. When Jesus sent his Apostles out, He sent them two by two, and He basically commanded them to take nothing on the journey: no food, no sack, no money in their belts. The point of the Lord is that all they needed was to trust in God. Jesus more or less says the same thing to us. As long as we trust in God, our needs will be met. That is easily said, but it is a bit daunting to actually do it. Yet, people have been doing that since Jesus time. It is one of the reasons that the Church has thrived for such a long time. There is a secondary reason for Jesus instructions though, one with which we may not be familiar. At that time there was a ruled that you could not enter a temple area with shoes or a moneybag, because you were there to serve the Lord, nothing else and no one else. The Apostles understood that preaching the Gospel and healing in God s name was holy work. Jesus did not want them to exemplify any other motive either. One of the foundational elements of stewardship is trusting God. What enables us to be good stewards and to think of giving to God first, of ourselves and what we have, is that we truly believe that God will take care of us. God has a plan for each of us, and it is better than our own plan may be. FAB55 MINISTRY Through this new bulletin column, Ministry of the Week, we will showcase one SJN Ministry each week to bring awareness to all of the good works of Stewardship that our parish supports and to encourage people of our community to join in. This week we are highlighting the SJN FAB55 Ministry. The FAB55 ministry s mission is to develop a social oriented faith based community within SJN seniors. About half the meetings are in Conlon Hall with potluck luncheons and the rest are local field trips. On site meetings include presentations on topics of interest, e.g. Christian Aging and common scams targeting Irvine residents, Q&A sessions with parish staff, arts and crafts, and professional entertainers. Some fields trips include the Shroud Museum at Santiago Retreat center, the Huell Howser exhibit at Chapman University, and a local chocolate factory. Trips normally include a lunch at a local restaurant. FAB 55 reaches into other ministries by donating baked goods and art projects. Meetings are normally at 11:00 AM on the first Wednesday of the month. Contrary to the ministry name, everyone is welcome for all meetings and trips. Meetings will resume on Wednesday September 5 at 11:00 AM in the parish hall. For additional information contact Jim or Elaine Cordes at jimcordes@aol.com or (949) 857-5533 2

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 15, 2018 THANK YOU I'd like to extend my deepest thanks for all of the prayers and donations that our parish gave in the past year for the 17 teens attended Life Teen Summer Camp in Big Bear, CA. Because of your generosity, the teens of our parish dove into the theme of "Relentless Father" based on Psalm 26:4, "Goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life". Everyday, they got to experience community, adventure (high ropes, hikes, lake time), games, bible studies, daily mass, confession, and eucharistic adoration. They were able to wrestle with some of the toughest questions in our faith (why is God silent, why is there suffering in the world), and ultimately experience the love of our Relentless Father. They came back stronger in their faith, ready to dive in and become disciples. Again, thank you to the whole St John Neumann community for making this possible! We couldn't have done it without your support. God Bless, Samantha Leveugle Director of Youth Ministry 4

HOME AWAY FROM HOME ST. MARIA LANAKILA, MAUI So when you go on a trip to Maui, what do you do on Sunday morning? Obviously, dads don t shave, but you do go to church. Here s a picture of Cameron and Nancy Jackson and their kids, Ethan and Evie, at St. Maria Lanakila on their vacation to Hawaii. Maria Lanakila, which means Our Lady of Victory, is located in downtown Lahaina on the island of Maui. The Church was established in 1846 and the stone building pictured here was completed in 1873. That s 145 years ago! The bells of Maria Lanakila have a story of their own. The original set of bells never made it to Lahaina, as they were lost in South America on their way from France. The second set of bells, which were inscribed with the name of Maria Lanakila, made it as far as Hilo, and remained there. The third set of bells finally made it, and are the ones that call the people to Mass today. Let everyone see and hear about where you went on vacation. Please e-mail pictures of churches you visited to Deacon John at john.erdag@sjnirvine.org and we ll make them into a Home Away From Home article. BLOOD DRIVE Thursday, August 2 The Knights of Columbus and Hoag Hospitals are sponsoring the St. John Neumann blood drive Thursday, August 2, from 7AM until 7PM. You can sign up for this blood drive today after mass, or phone Roy Caffrey at 949 679 1904. Walk -ins are also welcome. Can you spare one hour to save a life on August 2? Your blood donations have saved over 400 lives a year for the past 15 years. Please continue to give in this donation of life! Thank you. 5

SHARE YOUR VACATION PHOTOS! We're starting up our "Home Away From Home" articles in the bulletin again this summer. Please send a picture of you at the churches you visited on your vacations, along with their names and locations to Deacon John Erdag at john.erdag@sjnirvine.org. If you'd like, you can include a little anecdote or fun fact about your experience at the parish and we'll print that, too. WEDNESDAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION July 18 July 25 August 8 Come and spend the most peaceful hour (or part of an hour) of your week with Jesus. Every 2nd, 3rd, 4th (and 5th when applicable) Wednesdays from 9:00am to 6:00pm. Please join us! We are committed to having at least two persons present at all times of Adoration. If you can commit just one hour or more, please sign-up online at sjnirvine.org/eucharisticadoration or email us for questions at sjnadoration@sjnirvine.org MEDITATION GROUP Without meditation, we will ask little or nothing from God. We must then, always, every day, and several times in the day, ask God to give us the grace to love him with our whole heart." (St. Alphonsus Liguori Come, learn, and practice silent meditation on Mondays at 7:00 pm in the Church Loft. Morning meditation resumes on July 23.
