"Be Sealed with the Holy Spirit This Saturday I have the privilege to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation. This is at times called, the Bishop s sacrament because they are the ordinary minister of Confirmation. This sacrament completes the process of initiation into the full life of Christian faith. More is expected of those who step forward to be sealed with the Holy Spirit to witness our friendship with Christ. The picture on the bulletin cover is one of the most touching and emotional scenes in the New Testament. It is when Jesus had his apostles with him for the Last Supper. He knew it would be his final opportunity to teach them the sacred nature of who He was and what their callings would be before he would offer His life. He began by washing their feet to emphasize the humility required to be a servant of God. He exposed Judas and afterward expressed His love for each of them and for His Father. The artist, Jon McNaughton in reflection of this work wrote; I had to decide how to portray this scene. I chose to focus on the emotion of the people and the mood of the moment. I wanted there to be a feeling of authenticity without distracting from the story. I could see the apostles gathering around their Lord, to comfort Him and express their love for Jesus. How would I have felt, had I been there? I can imagine there was many tears shed that night. One of my favorite words spoken by Christ at the Last Supper was, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27 Jon is an established artist from Utah whose paintings have attracted the international attention of millions over the last few years. Highly detailed religious subjects are the focus of his paintings. The artist s experiences and faith are the inspiration for his work. Jesus continues to offer his life in friendship with those who believe and follow him. The sacrament of Confirmation is a free and deliberate act of handing over one s life to the power of the Holy Spirit; given to us so that God might be acknowledge and glorified. Jesus, during his final meal, on the night of his betrayal, said, Love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. You are my friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. John 15:15 The human person has been created for intimacy; to be loved and to return love. It comes down to having an intimate friendship with the living person of Jesus who makes his presence known to us through faith and the Church. God must be encountered as a reality that becomes part of our daily life. The experience of God needs to be cultivated through awareness of the sacredness of life; that God is in all things and brings all that is to life. The whole day is lived in union with our divine friend; when we are explicitly in prayer, but also during our chats with friends, neighbors and even strangers. Aware that God dwells in us, all our actions at work and play, in time of study and routine tasks we perform to the honor and glory due to God. From our rising in the morning to the time of rest during the night, in good health and exercise and times of illness and disabled with disease, there is the One friend who watches over us. Prayer is not expressed in words; it is rather living with and in the Word that gives us life and love. We believe that all life is God s life; in every birth and in every death God is there not as a bystander but in the depth of our person with a passionate love for us that will not let go. Yes, Jesus never leaves us; in friendship with all humanity the divine life is given to us. At every remembrance of his final meal, Jesus offers in the Eucharist the Paschal mystery of the New Covenant of his love. It is in dying that he gives his life to live in us. Our life shares in his sacrifice asking us to live no longer for ourselves. It is the Holy Spirit that lives in us to the glory of God.
