The First Two Woes Revelation 9 God s Judgment of Sin

I. The Fifth Trumpet (9:1-12) Revelation 9:1-12 1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. 2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.

I. The Fifth Trumpet (9:1-12) Revelation 9:1-12 - continued 3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. 4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.

I. The Fifth Trumpet (9:1-12) Revelation 9:1-12 - continued 5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. 6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.

I. The Fifth Trumpet (9:1-12) Revelation 9:1-12 - continued 7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. 8 And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.

I. The Fifth Trumpet (9:1-12) Revelation 9:1-12 - continued 9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. 10 And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.

I. The Fifth Trumpet (9:1-12) Revelation 9:1-12 - continued 11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon. 12 One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes more hereafter.

I. The Fifth Trumpet (9:1-12) A. Who is given the key to the bottomless pit? Isaiah 14:12, 15 12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. Luke 10:18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.

I. The Fifth Trumpet (9:1-12) B. Who gives the key? What does the key represent? Revelation 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. 1 Corinthians 15:24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.

I. The Fifth Trumpet (9:1-12) C. What is the bottomless pit? Luke 8:30-31 30 And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him. 31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep. 2 Peter 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

I. The Fifth Trumpet (9:1-12) D. What comes out of the pit? 1. Smoke that darkens the world 2. Locusts that are not natural a. They do not eat vegetation b. They have the power of scorpions c. They inflict misery on those that do not know God d. They look like. e. They have a king (Proverbs 30:27) Abadddon - Destruction Apollyon Destroyer

I. The Fifth Trumpet (9:1-12)

II. The Sixth Trumpet (9:13-21) Revelation 9:13-21 13 And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, 14 Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates. 15 And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men.

II. The Sixth Trumpet (9:13-21) Revelation 9:13-21 - continued 16 And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them. 17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone.

II. The Sixth Trumpet (9:13-21) Revelation 9:13-21 - continued 18 By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths. 19 For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.

II. The Sixth Trumpet (9:13-21) Revelation 9:13-21 - continued 20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: 21 Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

II. The Sixth Trumpet (9:13-21) A. The location of the sixth angel (9:13) 1. At the golden altar of incense Revelation 8:3 And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.

II. The Sixth Trumpet (9:13-21) B. The commandment to the angel (9:14-15) 1. Blow the sixth trumpet 2. Loose the four angels bound in the Euphrates

II. The Sixth Trumpet (9:13-21) C. The results on the earth (9:16-19) 1. An army unleashed 2. Fire, smoke, brimstone 3. Third of men slain

II. The Sixth Trumpet (9:13-21) D. The results in men s hearts (9:20-21) 1. No change in worship 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

II. The Sixth Trumpet (9:13-21) D. The results in men s hearts (9:20-21) - continued 2. No change in actions Romans 1:23-32
