LIVING HOPE HIGH SCHOOL P. O. Box 2376 Bungoma, Kenya-50200 Email: marilynkuhl59@gmail.com info@livinghopehighschool.org website: www.livinghopehighschool.org March 2018 Newsletter Marilyn Update Marilyn is doing well and glad to be back in Kenya. She continues to do the daily activities at Living Hope High School. With the new students and other items to take care of, she is continuing to be guided by the Lord and loving the students. She was blessed to have three Mission teams come to work at the School the past 4 months. Her new rollator helps her walk her ¼ mile a day. Donations Needed for Typhoid Vaccinations What exactly is Typhoid? Typhoid fever is caused by Salmonella typhi bacteria. Typhoid fever is rare in industrialized countries. However, it remains a serious health threat in the developing world, especially for children. Typhoid fever spreads through contaminated food and water or through close contact with someone who's infected. Signs and symptoms usually include high fever, headache, abdominal pain, and either constipation or diarrhea. Most people with typhoid fever feel better within a few days of starting antibiotic treatment, although a small number of them may die of complications. Prevention In many developing nations, the public health goals that can help prevent and control typhoid fever safe drinking water, improved sanitation and adequate medical care may be difficult to achieve. For that reason, some experts believe that vaccinating high-risk populations is the best way to control typhoid fever. The number of typhoid cases have decreased at LHHS due to a hand washing station and a drilled well with fresh drinking water, still many students come to Living Hope with the disease. We hope to eradicate the disease with vaccinations. Please send any donations to Riverton UMC P.O. Box 23, Riverton, WV. 26814. Please put on the memo line of checks for vaccinations.

Sponsorship- Sandy Binotto What does it mean to be a sponsor for a Living Hope High School Student? First what does sponsorship mean? Meaning: Someone who supports or champions something. Supporting a LHHS student is not just about giving funding to get them through high school. Yes, the funds are very important but it is also to learn about them, where they came from and what they have endured. I have had the privilege to visit the Living Hope High School as a volunteer for the past five years and also sponsor a student who has since graduated. While there my husband and I also were also blessed to visit my student s family and see where he lived, to sit and talk with his family and to hear what a blessing it was to have us sponsor him. Leonard, the father told us that he would have had to sell his farm to send his son to school and he was so thankful for our help. Many of the students come to me when I visit to ask, Do you know my sponsor? Some I do and many I don t. They ask me why don t they write me?, don t they love or like me? I admit, I don t have an answer for them. It is sad when some students get letters and items and others don t. The sponsors are a life line to them. The letters received from the students are so moving and may have art work all around them and they move the heart. I would ask that if you are sponsoring a child please send a note or letter to them. I can assure you that a big smile will come on their faces and their spirits will soar when they receive something from you. A big thanks to those who do write and send items. I get to see and hear about you when I visit. Many don t have parents and have a hard life and need love even if it comes in a note with words or a picture. You may mail your letters to them at address above. Everyone needs someone to champion them on! If you would like to sponsor a student, you can contact Helen Markwell at helenum@sprueknob.net or call her @ 304 567-2254. Some Form 1 students have gotten sponsors. Some are still in need of a sponsor.

Our 5th Visit to Living Hope High School What a joy it was to return for the 5 th time to Living Hope and see the amazing progress that had been achieved in the year since I left. The beautiful new Healing Hut now provides medical care on campus for our students as well as offices for staff and room for visiting Mission Teams to stay. Pam, my co-worker, and I were privileged to be part of the 8 hours of First Aid training for our Form II students which allows them to be certified First Aiders, able to give CPR and use the AED device. As a team of two we assisted Catherine, the LHHS nurse, in testing all 85 students for a range of diseases to ensure they are healthy and/or are treated if needed. Now that I have returned home to North Wales, PA, I am sharing the news of Living Hope by speaking to various groups who are interested in hearing about the quality Christian education experience that is being afforded to the students. Discussions with Marilyn while I was there resulted in plans to construct a strong security fence around the campus to ensure the children are safe. Work will begin shortly as I continue to raise money for the project. Someone very wise said that a traveler leaves a part of his/her heart with the people visited. That is certainly true for me as God has blessed me with the privilege of working with Marilyn and the children at Living Hope. Connie Damon One of Marilyn's sayings is "God is at work" and that was so evident this year at Living Hope High School as Connie and I made our 5th mission trip there. It was amazing to see the progress made at the school in just one year. The Healing Hut is beautiful and very functional- providing space for a clinic- offices - storage and a place to stay. The new kitchen is beautiful and functional. It was a blessing to spend time with the students and get to know them better. It was such a testimony to Marilyn's hard work and guidance to meet with Living Hope graduates in El Doret. Lives changed at Living Hope and now these young people will be changing Africa as they pursue their degrees. God is good! Pam Francis

Bridge is Completed! It is always a great blessing to have a project completed. After many donations, hard physical labor by Avery United Methodist team members (Morgantown,WV), LHHS students, local villagers, and Bridging the Gap Africa the foot bridge is completed. We Praise the Lord! Here are some pictures of the special day when Mum Marilyn, students, and many others went across the foot bridge at the dedication for the first time. Yes dreams do come true! Stephanie and Sammy Sammy This past December on the day of his primary school exams, Sammy was very nervous. He had studied hard but was concerned as he needed a high score to be accepted to Living Hope. Before the exam he closed his eyes to pray. His eyes became very heavy, as if he was going to fall asleep. He saw an angel come from the clouds and he felt as if the world around him was in chaos, yet he knew he was safe. When he opened his eyes he was crying. He thought it was a sign that he would do well on his exam and immediately started to work on his test.

The moment he had written his last answer there was a horrible explosion in the building just a few yards from where he was. He knew there were 4 very sick girls in the building. It was a dormitory. The girls were not able to walk, they were very sick. Sammy and 2 other boys rushed to the source of the explosion. There were some teachers standing outside and the flames were showing from the building. None of the adults would go in to rescue the girls. Sammy said to his friends, "We must gather all our courage and save these lives." One of the other boys ran inside with Sammy and they were each able to rescue a girl. The smoke was so thick they could not breathe. The other boy collapsed outside. Sammy knew the 2 girls inside would perish so he prayed, held his breath and returned into the fire. He did this twice, rescuing both of the other girls. As he exited the building with the last girl, there was a flash and the entire building was consumed by fire. He could not speak, his throat felt as if it was on fire. He just laid there for a time, watching the building burn. By the time the fire department arrived there was only rubble left. Eventually he got up, returned to his dorm and cleaned up. You see, that was the day Mum Marilyn was coming to visit. When she arrived she saw a smoldering building, but didn't know what had happened. Sammy's voice was horse and he didn't talk much, but she thought it was just from yelling during play, or singing a lot. Sammy never told her what had happened because he didn't want her to worry. Sammy was presented with a patch from Winchester Fire and Rescue for his heroic actions. As a firefighter, I understand the incredible and selfless actions this young man took. With no special protective gear, no breathing apparatus, nothing but his faith and a sign from God, he knew what needed to be done and he did it. With faith in God, all things are possible. Since the return of the teams many wonderful things have happen. Stephanie will be interviewed on TV about her trip to Kenya and she is also receiving an award from the Red Cross in Va. for her work at LHHS. Pam Francis was called about having an article put in an Agricultural Magazine about the farming in Kenya. Several students have become sponsored as well! Yes, God is good! If you would like to take a team to Living Hope High School or go as an Individual/Couple please contact Sandy Binotto 304-839-1505 or Helen Markwell 304 567-2254 Wish List for LHHS Donations for Vaccinations Donations for a Fence around School Sponsors for unsponsored Students A Christian Construction Company who would like to help sponsor A LHHS School Graduate to startup his own company and he would hire Students to work with him from the school. Individuals/Couples and Volunteer Teams who would like to visit Living Hope High School. As we celebrate Easter and the Resurrection and Pentecost, Let us not forget the reason Christ came. May we be a reflection of who He is. Let us Love, Forgive, Serve and give others Hope! Praising our Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ Sandy Binotto- VIM Coordinator for LHHS
