Sunrise service begins below with burial preparations. Festival service (10:30) begins on page 4 Congregation is seated in silence. Today our service begins with the lights dimmed as we walk with the women to Jesus tomb early Easter morning. Jesus burial on Friday had happened in haste; His followers fully expected nothing more than to prepare Jesus body for the sleep of death. (Read from the back of the church) Easter Sunrise Gospel: John 20:1-10 P Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him. 3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes. (The sanctuary is prepared for the resurrection proclamation.) 3

P Gathering for worship this Easter day, let us first repent of our sin, trusting in God s grace and mercy for the sake of Jesus Christ: Most merciful God, C we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P Jesus Christ died for us. He was buried, and He was raised on the third day. In Christ, there is forgiveness. Therefore, in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P Alleluia! Christ is risen! C He is risen indeed! Alleluia! T Service of the Word T Psalm 118:1, 15-29 P Bless our God, O peoples; let the sound of His praise be heard, C who has kept our soul among the living and has not let our feet slip. P For You, O God, have tested us; C You have tried us as silver is tried. P You brought us into the net; You laid a crushing burden on our backs; C You let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water; yet You have brought us out to a place of abundance. P I will come into Your house with burnt offerings; I will perform my vows to You, C that which my lips uttered and my mouth promised when I was in trouble. 6

P I will offer to You burnt offerings of fattened animals, with the smoke of the sacrifice of rams; I will make an offering of bulls and goats. C Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what He has done for my soul. P I cried to Him with my mouth, and high praise was on my tongue. C If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the LORD would not have listened. P But truly God has listened; C He has attended to the voice of my prayer. P Blessèd be God, C because He has not rejected my prayer or removed His steadfast love from me! Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Hymn of Praise: This is the Feast 7

On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. 10

You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. 7 But go, tell His disciples and Peter that He is going before 11

P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God. And most especially do we praise You that the tomb contains our sins but could not hold Your Son, so that by His dying He has destroyed death, and by His rising again He has restored to us everlasting life. Therefore with Mary Magdalene, Peter and John, and with all the witnesses of the resurrection, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: Sanctus Prayer of Thanksgiving P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the 16

salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. The Words of Our Lord Instituting Holy Communion Proclamation of Christ P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. P O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: The Lord s Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
