And with thy spirit. Let us all pray. Merciful God, you sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way of our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Eternal God, in whom we live and move and have our being, whose face is hidden from us by our sin, and whose mercy we forget: Cleanse us from all offenses, and deliver us from proud thoughts and vain desires; that humbly we may draw near to thee, confessing our faults, confiding in thy grace, and finding in thee our refuge and our strength, through Jesus Christ our Lord. ASSURANCE OF PARDON THE LORD S PRAYER In unison: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. FAITH & LIFE FORUM The Faith & Life Forum seeks to deepen our devotional lives by promoting religious literacy and cultural competency concerning communities of faith. Held every Sunday morning during the Term before the 11:00 a.m. worship service, the presentations take place in the Pusey Room of the Memorial Church from 9:30 10:30 a.m., but you are invited to gather for coffee and conversation at 9:00 a.m. The next Faith & Life Forum, Painting Harvard with a Broader Brush, will be held on Sunday, December 15. Artist Steve Coit will give the presentation. MUSIC NOTES Jeremiah Ingalls is remembered primarily for his collection of early New England folk-hymns, The Christian Harmony (1805), which opens with the beautiful tune Lovely Vine. A setting of words by Joshua Smith based on the Gospel of John, the text contemplates the divinity of God reflected in the natural world, and contains much familiar Advent imagery the blossoming vine, the redeeming grace of the blessed dove, and the approaching dazzling light. André Thomas is Director of Choral Activities at The Florida State University and a noted composer, conductor, and arranger of spirituals for choirs. Keep Your Lamps is a traditional spiritual from the Georgia Sea Islands, which takes as its theme the parable of the wise and foolish virgins from the Gospel of Matthew. The plainsong advent melody Veni Emmanuel forms the basis of this morning s organ music, in interpretations by three English composers. John Bertalot was organist of Blackburn Cathedral from 1964 1983, before moving to America as organist of Trinity Church, Princeton, and Associate Professor at Westminster Choir College. Kenneth Leighton held university appointments at Leeds and Oxford before becoming Reid Professor of Music at Edinburgh in 1970. Based in London, Alec Rowley studied at the Royal Academy of Music, and later taught at Trinity College; he was the organist of several notable churches in that city, including St. Margaret s, Westminster. NEXT SUNDAY S SERVICE Next Sunday is the Third Sunday of Advent. The preacher will be the Reverend Dudley C. Rose, Associate Dean for Ministry Studies and Lecturer on Ministry, Harvard Divinity School.
