STRETCHING OUR VISION METROPOLITAN INTERDENOMINATIONAL CHURCH THIRD SUNDAY OF FOUNDERS MONTH Sunday, February 17, 2019 SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY PREPARATION The pastor s entrance and the beginning of the musical prelude are the calls to silent, personal preparation for the worship of God. THE GATHERING We are standing on Holy ground, And I know that there are angels all around. Let us praise Jesus now, We are standing in God s presence on Holy Ground. LITANY Leader: O Christ, compel us to reexamine the standards by which we judge People: The values we condone, the values by which we condemn. Leader: You pronounce blessings upon the poor and the hungry; People: If you be for them, shall we dare be against them? Leader: You pronounce blessings upon the weeping and the forsaken; People: If you be for them, shall we dare be against them? Leader: You pronounce woes upon the greedy and the pretentious; People: If you be against them, shall we dare be for them? Leader: You pronounce woes upon the proud and the deceitful; People: If you be against them, shall we dare be for them? Leader: O Christ, inspire us to embrace the standards by which you judge People: The values by which you favor, the values by which you forgive!

OPENING HYMN LOVE LIFTED ME I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore, very deeply stained within, sinking to rise no more; but the Master of the sea heard my despairing cry, from the waters lifted me now safe am I. CHORUS: Love lifted me, Love lifted me, When nothing else could help, Love lifted me; Love lifted me, Love lifted me, When nothing else could help, Love lifted me. All my heart to Him I give, ever to him I ll cling, in His blessed presence live, ever His praises sing. Love so mighty and so true merits my soul s best songs; faithful, loving service too to Him belongs. CHORUS Souls in danger, look above, Jesus completely saves; He will lift you by His love out of the angry waves. He s the Master of the sea, billows His will obey; He your Savior wants to be be saved today. CHORUS WELCOME If you are here for the first time, we are delighted that you came. If you are dropping in for a second or third visit, we are glad you found something you were looking for. We hope you will be challenged by our worship and that you will come back again. PROCLAMATION THE WORD Luke 6:17-26 CHORAL RESPONSE Grant us wisdom, Grant us courage, For the living of these days, For the living of these days. PREPARATORY PERIOD OUR CALLING: Metropolitan Interdenominational Church is a community of believers inclusive of all and alienating to none, leading the way to spiritual growth by sharing God s love with the world. THE MESSAGE SENIOR SERVANT JOY IN THE MIDST OF MADNESS 17 He came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. 18 They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them. 20 Then he looked up at his disciples and said: Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. 24 But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. 25 Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. 26 Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. Luke 6:17-26 SERMON NOTES

RESPONSE Please do not leave the sanctuary or in any other manner create a distraction during the invitational period. This is a moment of unparalleled importance. MOMENTS OF REFLECTION The Voices of Metropolitan INVITATION TO LIFE IN CHRIST This church will welcome into its membership any persons who love and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, and who promise to live according to His laws of Love, recognizing all people as brothers and sisters for whom He gave His life. THE LORD S SUPPER Communion Prayer We do not presume to come to this, Thy table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in Thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs from under Thy table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to partake of this sacrament of Thy Son, Jesus Christ, that we may walk in newness of life and grow to reflect Thy Spirit in all things forevermore, Amen. (We will eat and drink together after all have been served.) FELLOWSHIP CIRCLE We ve come too far to turn back now; By the grace of God we re gonna make it somehow. Nobody knows the trouble we ve seen; We ve come too far to turn back now. WE YIELD TO THE LOVE OF GOD We bare our lives to the scrutiny, to the judgement, to the love of God. There is so much that burdens the mind, that peoples the thoughts, that again and again we are confused even in the great quiet Presence of God. We yield to Him our confusions We yield to Him our frailties and our limitations We yield the desires of our minds and hearts We yield the desires of which we are ashamed We yield our joys We yield our concerns for the world where we are exposed to much that casts down and depresses, to little that uplifts and inspires We yield our lives, the nerve centers of our consent All of this and more than tongue can say and heart can feel and mind can think all of this we yield to the scrutiny, to the judgement, to the love of God. (From Concerning Disciplines of the Spirit, in For the Inward Journey, pp. 94-5) HOWARD THURMAN CORE VALUES Our core values define the framework within which we live out the ideals of Our Calling based upon the word of God as reflected in Jesus Christ. STRETCHING OUR VISION METROPOLITAN INTERDENOMINATIONAL CHURCH SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY Sunday, February 17, 2019 THIRD SUNDAY OF FOUNDERS MONTH Metropolitan Interdenominational Church is a community of believers inclusive of all and alienating to none, leading the way to spiritual growth by sharing God s love with the world. CHOOSING SIDES CHOOSING SIDES is one of the dynamics in human life which has been a part of our existence since the beginning of time. Thus, throughout history we have been CHOOSING SIDES in ways that have led to hot debate, arguments, conflict and even war. In the United States, we have wrestled with Slavery, Women s Rights, Desegregation, Interracial Marriage, Homosexuality / Gay Liberation, Non-violence, Affirmative Action, Marriage Equality, Health Care Reform, Immigration, Bathroom Bills and Alternative Facts, and the list of issues goes on in identifying the issues that give rise to CHOOSING SIDES. Those who accept the mandate of God revealed through Micah, to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with your God, and Jesus teachings in the Beatitudes, will more often than not find themselves CHOOSING SIDES against those who have become slaves to the ways of the world. Walking with Jesus requires CHOOSING SIDES. (Reprinted from Sunday, January 29, 2017) Senior Servant
