Jesus announced that mission using the framework we hear in today's Gospel from the prophet Isaiah: glad tidings will be brought to the poor, liberty to captives, recovery of sight for the blind, and freedom for the oppressed. Jesus inaugurates the Kingdom of God in his person through his life, death, and Resurrection. We are charged with the task of continuing the mission that Jesus began. Jesus set the framework for all of us when he announced his ministry in today's Gospel. Jesus also gave us the helper we would need to enable us to participate in his mission. The Holy Spirit has been given to us so that we, the Church, might serve the Kingdom of God. Gather with your family and suggest that they try to picture the vision that Jesus describes using the words of the prophet Isaiah as you read today's Gospel, Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21.Think about your neighborhood, your community. What are the situations and who are the people who most need to see this vision fulfilled? What steps would be necessary to make the vision a reality for them? Make a family commitment to pray for the Kingdom of God and to take a particular action that will address a need you see in your community. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you by praying the Prayer to the Holy Spirit. St. Anthony Summer Mission Trip--We are looking for jobs to complete for parishioners! This Sunday marks the beginning of Catholic Schools Week nationwide. One of the things I personally love about Catholic Schools Week is the extra attention we seem to put on celebrating our students. And rightly so! When I reflect back on my own upbringing, first and foremost is my parents, but also my broader family and community of St. Michael Parish and Grade School, I see we were all taught of God's love that so often surpasses our own understanding. That same hope existed then and still does today in Effingham, Shumway and all over the world. I am so thankful to all those that saw a good future for our Church and cared enough to help form us. In my specific vocation as a Catholic high school principal, I get to see the tremendous things high school students are doing and how they live their faith. Sure, they have their challenges. We all do! But the amount of times our students say "yes" to doing what is good and right is truly remarkable. They so often say "yes" to our Lord in spite of the temptations our world today places upon them. I get to see young people today drawn to the beauty, love and joy that comes with a relationship with Jesus Christ. The effort and energy placed on forming youth today is so worth it. We do this because of an optimism of what is to come. People are praying for students for an increase in virtue, and for their protection. Thank you! Seeing students live virtuous lives is so inspirational and this doesn't happen without the support of our parish families! Your continued support and prayers will help our youth survive and even thrive during their teenage years and be more ordered toward the eternal reward of Heaven! - Greg Fearday, Principal at St. Anthony High School Spring into action: making a DeColores weekend.
