Rountons & Welbury Gazette July 2017

A Rather Long Charity Walk On Monday 12 th June, I had a call from two people asking to spend that night at Brompton church. That s never happened before and I was intrigued to find out a bit about them. Franz is a Franciscan Friar who had been walking for over three years though Europe with his colleague Heiko, they are from Dietfurt in Bavaria, Germany. What I found most fascinating was that they were travelling without money, food or accommodation. They simply relied on the hospitality of people in the places they were visiting. This ties in with the idea of St Francis about hospitality and begging. We would normally feel a bit sheepish about asking for a favour, but they were quite bold in asking for shelter and food. St Francis said that in asking for food they were actually bestowing a blessing on the people who gave help and it actually felt like that to me. As the response to the recent terrorist attacks and the fire in West London shows, people are really eager and willing to help others, but perhaps we are not always ready to ask others for help. I felt challenged and inspired by the visit and it s helped me to reflect on the way that we rely on money and are unwilling to rely on God s mercy. I m not planning to trek round Europe, but I have been challenged and am grateful for the visit. It was a shame that more people did not get to meet them, but the lack of forward planning made this difficult. Best wishes, Jonathan Cooper The Vicarage, Brompton, Northallerton DL6 2QA 01609 772436 The churchwardens for the benefice are: Michael Nightingale, West Rounton 882435; Michael Dale, East Rounton 882517; Peter Walker, Welbury 882947; Joanne Hughes, Welbury 882268
