If we were to accept uncritically the get ahead messages of our culture, we would think that happiness means having money, being successful, and having many possessions. In this way, we are not unlike the people who heard Jesus teach on the day that he taught the Beatitudes. They too associated happiness with possessions and success. The report of the Beatitudes in Luke's Gospel, however, takes things one step further. Not only will we not find happiness through the get ahead messages of the world, but relying upon these messages will cause us harm. The warnings spoken are particularly challenging because they suggest that our way of life must change if we are to gain the lasting happiness of eternal life. Talk together as a family about what society tells us makes a person successful. Make a list of the traits that you associate with a successful person. Then read together today's Gospel, Luke 6:17,20-26. Reflect on Jesus' description of blessedness in the Kingdom of God. Then consider the warnings. Why are these surprising and challenging? What, then, is the measure of success in the Kingdom of God? Together write prayers of petition based on your discussion. Pray these prayers together, asking God to help your family seek the blessings of the Kingdom of God. Protecting God s Children We are going to host a Protecting God's Children Workshop on Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at 6:00pm, at the Sacred Heart Parish Center, Effingham. Please call 347.7177 to register. St. Anthony Summer Mission Trip--We are looking for jobs to complete for parishioners! Our progress has reached a stand still. Please consider giving if you have not done so. Won t you be my Valentine? For 70 years? Today I offered mass at St. Anthony Church and the mass intention was for Jack & Illa Nesbit, our church neighbors, who on this day were celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary. They often attend the 6:30 am mass and were able to start their anniversary day at mass together in the second pew. They have been residents of Effingham for 42 years. They love this community and love their parish family. Many who were at mass came up to them to congratulate them after mass. After mass we continued with breakfast at Niemerg s. I heard the stories of their journey together and how the railroad job took them to many different towns to live in, but Effingham was their favorite. They told me of their having 8 children, a boys basketball team (5), and three cheerleaders. I wonder when Jack gave Illa his first valentine? What does it take to keep a marriage alive and well??? I think we could ask Jack and Illa, don t you think? For these past years since retirement, at least 20 years ago, daily mass has been one thing they never missed. They know now that when you feed your love with the very best (Jesus), your love will be fruitful and blessings will be received daily. HAPPY VALENTINE S DAY (belated). I hope you felt loved and treasured. I miss getting to send my mom and grandma these special cards of love. I do send a card to the mother of a high school classmate who was like another mom to me and so many others. She is 88 and recently was in an accident that caused her great suffering. Surprising all the medical experts she has fought back against all odds and now is in rehab and God willing will go home by the first of March if all keeps going well. Selfishly I prayed daily for her healing as I was not ready to let her go. I love her a great deal. Though many complain about how Valentine s Day is a rip off and a waste of money, I tend to appreciate the message of love, gratitude, and friendship that can come with it. Children really love this day giving and receiving their Valentines. I think it is good to teach them the importance of Loving and caring with kindness others who mean a lot to you. I want to share with you how happy I am to pastor and shepherd this parish (flock). I love so many things about being a part of the life of this parish family. Both at St. Anthony and St. Mary/Annunciation we have so much to be proud of and so much to enjoy as we see all the blessings God continues to bestow upon us. You are a blessing to me and my life as a priest/pastor, and I pray that God will use me in some way to bless your faith journey as well..with Love, Fr. After seven years of marriage and working with couples as a therapist, I ve learned that relationships succeed because we work things out. Marriages are not self-sustaining and do not survive on autopilot. They require constant attention and intentional effort. But it can be rewarding effort. It can be an adventure! And like any adventure it is not easy. There are unexpected detours, obstacles, and challenges. But there are also thrills, excitement, and happiness. God designed marriage this way.
