Welcome to Spiritually Hungry s Summer Challenge: Grow Closer To God Through The Holy Spirit Month 3 We are wrapping up the Summer Challenge by turning our attention to the Holy Spirit. Often a mystery to many Christians, the Holy Spirit is an essential figure in our relationship and restoration with God. This Challenge takes you through important pieces of Scripture to help you better understand better the purpose, function and reality of the Holy Spirit in the Christian life. God is always with you. Always. This is made possible through the tremendous sacrifice Jesus Christ made by laying down His life to not only glorify His Father, but to bring all who follow Jesus back to God. In doing so, Jesus enabled all believers to live in God s presence while still on this earth by the Holy Spirit. It is through the Holy Spirit we walk with God again, living in this broken world - and that is a life changing reality! We hope that this month is an awakening for you to the awesome gift of the Holy Spirit. This 31 day plan is the last of three Challenges we re releasing this summer to help you cultivate a deeper connection to God and the profound relationship that He wants with you. Focusing on His presence through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in your life will help you obtain a deeper sense of God s grace, power and deepest desires for you to have a strong(er) relationship with Him. In this Challenge, you ll find: An Entrance Worksheet: The questions in this worksheet will help you process how you presently think about the Holy Spirit and what it means for your life. The 31 Day Challenge: Each day, you ll be provided with Scripture to read through that describes something about the Holy Spirit. You ll also receive a reflection to help you process your reading and turn to God in prayer about the truth you ve received in Scripture. An Exit Worksheet: After completing the worksheet, you ll be asked to complete a final worksheet to process all you ve learned about the Holy Spirit through Scripture, and to give you some ideas for moving forward with your new understanding of our loving God. SpirituallyHungry.com 2

If you follow this Challenge, we believe you ll come out the other side with a profoundly new appreciation of God and the wonderful and good desires He has for your relationship with Him. Can you imagine how your life might look differently if you were able to see God s presence with you in all circumstances? That s our hope for you in taking this Challenge! #1 Why are you taking this Challenge? Entrance Worksheet #2 What do you hope to get out of this Challenge? #3 What would you like to be different in your understanding of the Holy Spirit? #4 What is your understanding of the Holy Spirit? What does God look like to you? #5 How do you see the Spirit s presence in your life currently? SpirituallyHungry.com 3

Day 1 Today s Scripture: Romans 8:27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God s own will. Scripture Reflection: We may struggle to understand God s will, wonder if we are within it, or praying within the confines of God s will. Although those concerns may follow us, it s important to recognize that much of this is within the confines of God s own knowledge. We were never intended to understand these things, and should instead rest in the simple knowledge that the Holy Spirit represents us before God in these matters. Day 2 Today s Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:10 But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God s deep secrets. Scripture Reflection: The Holy Spirit s wisdom and knowledge has no boundaries or restraints. If we should ever wonder if God understands our position, our desires or intentions, there should be no doubt. God s Spirit with us is fully aware of all possible knowledge about us, and we can trust that God will do good with that information. Day 3 Today s Scripture: Galatians 5:18 But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses. SpirituallyHungry.com 4

Scripture Reflection: In fulfilling the Law and the Prophets (Matt. 5:18), Jesus enacted a New Covenant that is marked not by specific rules, but guidance by the Spirit, who directs and guides us. While many moral actions may look similar, such as abstaining from sin, the source of those motivations - the Spirit s direction verses human rulekeeping - makes this a marked departure from the Old Covenant. Day 4 Today s Scripture: Galatians 5:22-23 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Scripture Reflection: Although well known, it is important to remember that the Fruit of the Spirit serve as poignant markers of what life in the Spirit looks like. It s God s desire that these fruit grow and multiply in our lives, and that we would embody each as we become more like Jesus. Day 5 Today s Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:19 Don t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? Scripture Reflection: God s Spirit lives in you! Although this may be difficult for many of us to ascertain, the place where God lives is always the holiest place on Earth. In the past it was the Garden, the Tabernacle, the Temple, and in Christ. Now, God s Spirit is with us. What wonderful value we hold, and God wants us to respond with the same reverence for our body and selves that we would hold for any place of great holiness. Day 6 SpirituallyHungry.com 5

Today s Scripture: Romans 8:26b For example, we don t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. Scripture Reflection: Although this Scripture is mysterious in nature, it is further evidence to us that the Spirit has the best intentions for us and implores our status before God at all times. Literally, God communicates with God about us, bolstering our place in God s heart and plan. Day 7 Today s Scripture: Ephesians 1:14 The Spirit is God s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him. Scripture Reflection: God cannot lose or forget anyone, certainly not those who have placed their trust in Jesus and are indwelled by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit s presence with us is the primary evidence that points to assurance that God will fulfill His promise to redeem those He has selected at the appointed time. Day 8 Today s Scripture: Acts 2:3-4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. Scripture Reflection: At Pentecost, the presence of the Holy Spirit among all believers began, which continues to this day. As an initial marker of the Spirit s presence, the believers there began to speak in tongues. Although Christian traditions have different interpretations of what tongues are, they all share in common the belief that this special SpirituallyHungry.com 6

ability bestowed by the Spirit initiated a new era of sharing truth about God from the individual believer, an ability previously unaccessible to the average person. Day 9 Today s Scripture: John 3:6-8 Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. Scripture Reflection: The Holy Spirit s presence with us brings us to life, the fully eternal life that God always intended, for the first time. In what ways have you experienced this fullness of life that God has provided in the gift of His Spirit? Day 10 Today s Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:14 But people who aren t spiritual can t receive these truths from God s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means. Scripture Reflection: If other people look at you strangely, or in wonder, for living a life in the Spirit, see that as a good thing, and as a powerful testimony to the uniqueness of Jesus in your life, shaping your thoughts and actions. There should always be something about ourselves as people bearing the Holy Spirit that seems different to the rest of the world. SpirituallyHungry.com 7

Day 11 Today s Scripture: Luke 24:49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high. Scripture Reflection: Throughout His ministry, Jesus promised the Holy Spirit s coming, but cautioned His followers that they would need to wait for it until after His death. We have the wonderful privilege of being bestowed with the Spirit upon accepting Jesus as Lord, who Jesus still promises to all. Day 12 Today s Scripture: Romans 8:6 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace Scripture Reflection: The Holy Spirit s desire is to guide our thoughts, soothe our minds and lead us into greater Christ-likeness. Transformation is central to God s desire for us, to give us a better life in both the present life and the future eternal one. Day 13 Today s Scripture: 1 Chronicles 12:18 Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, the leader of the Thirty, and he said, We are yours, David! We are on your side, son of Jesse. Peace and prosperity be with you, and success to all who help you, for your God is the one who helps you. So David let them join him, and he made them officers over his troops. SpirituallyHungry.com 8

Scripture Reflection: In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit s indwelling was infrequent and marked for special occasions and moments. However, even as permanent vessels of the Spirit, we too are endowed with the opportunity to be lifted by the Spirit in times of need. In what ways has the Holy Spirit emboldened or gave you courage in your past? Day 14 Today s Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:13 But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit. Scripture Reflection: We may not feel connected to every Christian that we encounter, but regardless of background or personality, true believers are all connected by the same Spirit. God unites all of us through His presence within us, creating a bond of commonality that we should all place at the forefront of our thoughts in Christian community. Day 15 Today s Scripture: John 14:26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative that is, the Holy Spirit he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you. Scripture Reflection: Part of the Holy Spirit s ministry to us is to help us to remain on the path with Jesus. It was never Jesus intent to leave us with only Scripture and other people to accompany us on our spiritual journey. God has always given Himself to us, available at each and every moment. SpirituallyHungry.com 9

Day 16 Today s Scripture: Romans 8:26a 26 And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don t know what God wants us to pray for. Scripture Reflection: Many Christians struggle with knowing how to pray, what to pray or when to pray. We can have confidence that God can transform our meager attempts at prayer into mighty declarations through the Spirit, who is present with us as we pray, so that we cannot go wrong, even in our brokenness. Day 17 Today s Scripture: Genesis 1:2 The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Scripture Reflection: Although we often think of the Holy Spirit s full arrival as taking place at Pentecost, in reality the Holy Spirit was an active agent in the Creation of the world, from the beginning. It was always God s plan to have the Spirit fully indwell the world. Through Christ, God s plan to enable the Spirit s return to full dwelling on the Earth took a profound step to fulfilling God s plan of redemption of the world. Day 18 Today s Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:3 So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit. Scripture Reflection: There is a mutual relationship between the Spirit and our response to Jesus. The Spirit enables us to respond to Jesus, and then indwells us. SpirituallyHungry.com 10

Although we may feel as though our decision to follow Jesus was made by ourselves, it is important to remember that God first came alongside us through the Spirit to make that relationship possible. Day 19 Today s Scripture: Galatians 5:17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. Scripture Reflection: We might consider ourselves as people in a struggle against sin, but as is the case in so many things, it is actually God, through His Spirit, who battles sin for us. Before Jesus saving power, we were completely consumed by sin, and as mortal humans still have no power against it. It is only through the Spirit that we can begin to be shaped and altered, turning away from sin and toward the goodness of life God wants for us. Day 20 Today s Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:3-4 I came to you in weakness timid and trembling. And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit. Scripture Reflection: The gifting of the Holy Spirit enables us to transform our meager abilities into powerful actions for God s kingdom. In relying on the Holy Spirit, we need not worry if our abilities are excellent, but if God s Spirit works within what we have to offer. SpirituallyHungry.com 11

Day 21 Today s Scripture: Romans 15:30 Dear brothers and sisters, I urge you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to join in my struggle by praying to God for me. Do this because of your love for me, given to you by the Holy Spirit. Scripture Reflection: Here, Paul describes the Holy Spirit as bestowing love on the readers for him, to empathize with his story and difficulties. In the same way, the Holy Spirit can enable us to find love for one another in the way that Jesus showed us, and help us to come alongside many people we might not have otherwise imagined that we might. Day 22 Today s Scripture: Judges 3:10 The Spirit of the LORD came on him, so that he became Israel s judge Scripture Reflection: God s Spirit enables people to take on roles and places of leadership that they might not have been able to accomplish otherwise. Are there ways in which God has equipped you for service in ways that you hadn t otherwise expected? Day 23 Today s Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:13 When we tell you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit s words to explain spiritual truths. Scripture Reflection: There should often be a counter-intuitive nature to God s wisdom that sounds and feels different than the kind of wisdom we encounter throughout other places in the world. God s wisdom, as revealed through the Holy Spirit, should help us SpirituallyHungry.com 12

to discern between the conflicting messages that we encounter, and enable us to respond effectively and within God s will. Day 24 Today s Scripture: Micah 3:8 But as for me, I am filled with power with the Spirit of the Lord. I am filled with justice and strength to boldly declare Israel s sin and rebellion. Scripture Reflection: The Holy Spirit equips us with the ability to stand up against evil and resist going against the flow of this world, helping us to see right from wrong. In what ways has the Spirit spoken to you about discerning and avoiding the temptations of evil in your own life? Day 25 Today s Scripture: Romans 14:17 For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Scripture Reflection: In this passage, Paul specifically deals with concerns about following the Jewish dietary laws, but the larger principle that we can draw is that life in the Spirit is not rule-centered, but focused on the Fruit that comes from the Spirit s presence. Morals naturally fall into place properly when living life in the Spirit, but keeping of the rules for the sake of law keeping does not equate to holiness or spirituality. SpirituallyHungry.com 13

Day 26 Today s Scripture: Isaiah 11:2 And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, Scripture Reflection: This prophecy points to Jesus and His future relationship with the Spirit. In Jesus, the Holy Spirit indwelled and was accessed fully, giving Jesus His power, ability and knowledge. It is God s intention that we too be connected to the Spirit in this way. Day 27 Today s Scripture: Psalm 139:7 I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! Scripture Reflection: Many people describe periods of their life as running away from God, which points to only their own personal thoughts and perspective of relationship. But in reality, we can t actual run or hide from God. God is everywhere, whether we acknowledge it or not. The presence of the Holy Spirit means that God is always ready and willing to accept our turning to Him at any moment, no matter how far away we might seem. Day 28 Today s Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:11 11 No one can know a person s thoughts except that person s own spirit, and no one can know God s thoughts except God s own Spirit. Scripture Reflection: The Holy Spirit is the primary means that we have for understanding God. Although we can point to the Bible as a great source of that information, it is important to remember that it is only through the Spirit s awakening of SpirituallyHungry.com 14

our minds and hearts that we can even begin to ascertain the true meaning of Scripture and what it means for our life. Day 29 Today s Scripture: Galatians 5:25 Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit s leading in every part of our lives. Scripture Reflection: We must always battle against compartmentalization of our lives, and allow God to work in all areas. That is what living life by the Spirit looks like - that God infiltrates all of our decision making and choices in life, away from sin and toward God. Day 30 Today s Scripture: 2 Corinthians 3:17 For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. Scripture Reflection: The Holy Spirit enables us to freedom by liberating us from the chains of sin, doubt, anxiety, confusion. Chains of oppression follow us in the sin-state, but God s desire has always been to free us from falling captive to this world. Day 31 - Final Reflection Today s Scripture: Luke 4:1 Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. Scripture Reflection: Jesus himself was full of the Holy Spirit. This is how Jesus lived His life, never wavering in His connection to the Spirit. This is the model that Jesus laid for us, and one that we can still follow today. We hope that in your pursuit of Christlikeness that it centers around life in the Spirit. SpirituallyHungry.com 15
