Now let the heavens be joyful, and earth her song begin, the whole world keep high triumph and all that is therein; Let all things in creation their notes of gladness blend, for Christ the Lord has risen, our joy that has no end. - Victimae Paschali Laudes (11 th century) Today is a day of faith, of joy and rejoicing. The resurrection of Christ is the cornerstone of our faith and the most extraordinary happening in human history. For Christians there is not a day that compares with Easter Day. This is truly the day of the Lord. All our hopes and happiness come from what happened on that first Easter morning. It s a dream come true. By God s power, the stone was rolled back, the grave was opened and the tomb was found empty. Pain, despair and misery were pushed into second place as a whole new future, full of hope and happiness of eternal life, was opened up for us beyond the grave. Heaven and earth rejoiced in celebrating Christ s victory over death for all people. God had made His love for us absolute and clear. Easter is all about newness of life in Christ. The risen life of Christ is ours for the taking. Today s Feast provides us with a fresh opportunity of facing ourselves with the issue of our own resurrection. It presents us with the challenge of spreading the light and the life of the Risen Christ to those around us who have moved away from their faith and the Church. Are we alive in Christ with the Risen Lord, firmly rooted in our hearts and actions, or are we still living in a selfish manner? If we are truly the people of God then, those who are searching for meaning in life will discover from us that Christ is the way home, the resting place for restless hearts. I wish you and your dear ones a very happy and joyous Easter Feast. May the new life we celebrate be the fulfillment of your life s journey. Fr. Jack BLESSING FOR THE EASTER MEAL With great joy we come to our Easter dinner As we continue our celebration of the newness of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus. We rejoice in the resurrection of Spring, as birds, flowers and fields come alive after the long sleep of Winter. may we, in this Easter Sunday meal, share with them the great joy of life. May the taste and goodness of this food be a promise of the Eternal Easter meal we shall all share with the Risen Lord. ALLELUIA1 ALLELUIA! 2

Treasures from Our Tradition Over the centuries, the Church has demonstrated a wonderful ability to adopt a culture s favorite symbols and customs and assign them new meaning. Easter eggs have a very ancient pedigree: nature s perfect package, emblem of new life, dyed and decorated and given as gifts in ancient Egypt, Rome, China, and Persia. Just as the long hard winter is over, the egg bursts with promise of life and nourishment. Long ago, Christians came to see the egg not as a symbol of spring s rebirth, but of ours, and as a sign of Christ s tomb. A Polish legend says that Mary, in compassion for the soldiers at the cross, gave them eggs, but that her tears stained their shells with brilliant color. Legends have their origin in tales told around a hearth, but they often contain a profound truth. The idea of Mary, the first Christian, engaged in a merciful act of forgiveness and tenderness even in the shadow of the cross, describes the ageold wish that Christ Easter in us.
