Housekeeping There are some people in this room that know more about me than my first and last name This material is not mine

Hello, My Name is Busy A little bit about me

You came here for a reason Maybe it was the chocolate When was the last time you had a moment about scheduling or your use of time? What did that look like? What was most upsetting about the situation? What kind of change are you hoping a topic like this could bring about in your life?

What does the Bible have to say? Psalm 90:12 So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Ephesians 5:15-16 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise by as wise, making the best of the time, because the days are evil. 1 Corinthians 14:40 But all things should be done decently and in order Proverbs 27:1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring 1 Peter 5:8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Proverbs 16:9 The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. Proverbs 19:21 Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.

Three Dangers of Busyness Busyness can ruin our joy. (Phil 4:4; Gal 5:22; John 15:11) Busyness can rob our hearts. (Mark 4:1-20) Busyness can cover the rot in our souls. (sounds encouraging doesn t it)

ruins our joy When our lives are frantic we re more prone to anxiety, resentment, impatience and irritability. Gal 5:22-26 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. Plan for Margin the space between our load and our limit

robs our hearts Mark 4:1-20 the parable of the soils 4:19 the thorns the worries of life but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. The house The kids birthday party The perfect lesson delivery Busyness kills more Christians than bullets. Kevin DeYoung How often have you lost your capacity to concentrate and learn on Sunday morning, or how about right now?

hides the rot. The Killer P s People Pleasing Possessions Proving Yourself Perfectionism Poor Planning Am I trying to do good or am I trying to make myself look good?

But Jesus was busy right? If Jesus were alive today, he d get more emails, more texts, more missed calls, a zillion friend requests and conference gigs. Yet, he was just like us in every way but without sin. Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Jesus stays on task never spent a wasted day terrifically busy Mark 1:34-39 And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, and they found him and said to him, Everyone is looking for you. And he said to them, Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out. And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.

But Jesus was, you know, Jesus!? Don t be tempted to believe your life and Jesus are so different you can t glean application from those verses. Have you ever wished everyone would stop clamoring for your attention? Try crowds of thousands, and specifically a group of 12 children/employees/coworkers What was Jesus driven by? Not the acceptance of people but the mission of His Father Mark 3:20-21 Then he went home, and the crowd gathered again, so that they could not even eat. And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, He is out of his mind. Jesus knew the difference between the urgent and the important. Jesus understood that all the good things he could do were not necessarily the things he ought to do. BOTTOM LINE: He knew His priorities.

One Thing You Must Do Prioritize Biblically Love the Lord your God with all your heart soul strength and mind; and love others as you love yourself. (Luke 10:27) Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me. But the Lord answered her, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her. (Luke 10: 38 42)

What are your priorities? What is your mission? Do you have a personal or family mission statement?

Biblical help for your mission 2 Corinthians 5:9-10 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil. 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. Matthew 18:1-10 Luke 10:27 Who is the greatest in Heaven? A humble servant. Love the Lord your God with all your heart soul strength and mind; and love others as you love yourself.

More help for the one thing I must set priorities because I can t do it all I must set priorities if I am to serve others more effectively I must allow others to set their own priorities

What you don t hearing me saying You should be serve the church/others instead of sleeping You should serve the church/others to the detriment of your family You should serve the church/others to the detriment of your own time in the word and prayer

What you do hear me saying Time is finite resource God has given us plenty of evidence to determine how He would have us use the time that he has given us Use the gifts God gives us to assess and adjust our biblical priorities as necessary You are not alone in this fight! Get some help! Lord, Help me to be better equipped that I might glorify you with my time. Amen.
