To seek, trust and glorify God through humble service and continual prayer. To raise up devoted disciples. July 24, 2016 St. Ann Church & Model Schools 46-129 Haiku Road Kaneohe, Hawaii www.saintannhawaii.org Feasts of Saint Ann and Saint Joachim July 26 Early legends [and tradition] tell us that Ann is from Nazareth where she lives with her husband Joachim. She is from the tribe of Levi, and Joachim is from the tribe of Judah. This unusual match from different tribes has occurred because their fathers are close friends and have promised their children in marriage to each other. Joachim and Ann feel the social reproaches of being childless among their Jewish friends who consider children a special blessing from God. This disgrace makes Joachim decide to go to the desert to pray and fast. Meanwhile, Ann remains at home where she, too, fasts and prays with great fervor to the Almighty that he will take away their punishment. During her prayer an angel appears to Ann and says, Ann, the Lord has heard your prayer, and you will conceive, and the entire world will speak of the fruit of your womb. Ann promises to dedicate Mary to God. She presents her to the high priest. Mary remains in the temple precincts from three years of age until she marries St. Joseph. The early legends [and tradition] continue. Joachim dies while Mary is attending school and working in the temple precincts. Ann lives alone as a widow from the time of the birth of her grandson, Jesus. She dedicates her life in the service of the Lord in the temple where she performs all sorts of charitable works of mercy, especially toward the poor. When Jesus, Mary and Joseph come back to Nazareth from their flight and exile in Egypt, they live for a time with Ann. Some call July 26 the Feast of Grandparents. On this day the Church desires that all grandparents acknowledge their responsibility to preserve the faith and religious traditions for future generations. We remind young people that the wisdom and experience of their elders are a mighty source of spiritual enrichment. Rev. Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Today s Reflection: Forgive us our sins. These words from The Lord s Prayer in today s Gospel help us imagine the abundance of God s mercy. This mercy is visible to us in today s first reading as well. Thus, we also need to extend mercy to one another. When we do so, we allow the presence of Christ to shine. If we hoard God s mercy, we do little to further the reign of God. Let us ask for the help we need to extend mercy to others by praying with the psalmist, Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me. Can you name one way that you have shown mercy to another person in the past week? Next Sunday s Readings - July 31, 2016 - Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Ecclesiastes 1:2, 2:21-23 Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11 Luke 12:13-21 There are all sorts of reverberations of these themes throughout the scriptures. Qoheleth (the Preacher ) instructs us that, ultimately, everything of our life on earth is but an empty vanity when we are called from this life. Jesus shows us our true selves in the example of the man who expends all his energy to store his harvest to ensure the luxury of his future. Qoheleth, Paul, and Jesus are all of a like mind on this issue. We have been made in the image of our Creator, we believe that God s creation is graced and good, but we need to keep this in perspective. For all creation and all creatures humans included will have naught for a destiny unless that destiny is joined to that of Christ. He preaches that we can be, indeed we must be, rich with treasure but only the kind of treasure that truly matters to God. If you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, we hear this in Colossians 3:1. Think of what is above as well. Easy to comprehend. Good advice. Only common sense. But the ability to seek and think of what is above, Paul tells us, comes at a price. In order to have truly died so that our life of glory is with Christ in heaven, we must put to death all those things about our life below that impede our living for Christ and with Christ as our all in all. We cannot really seek and think about things above while we maintain the worst of our human passions, perpetuate our deceitfulness, and emphasize our differences. In this way we not only continue the lying to one another, but also lie to ourselves, and imagine that we can deceive God. Only in the stopping of this can we truly show forth our baptismal image: that of Christ, who is the image of the unseen God. Only then can we take off that old self and be that new creation, the image of our Creator fully restored in Christ. Copyright 2007, World Library Publications. All rights reserved

Blessed Carlos Manuel Cecilio Rodriguez Santiago Carlos Manuel Cecilio Rodriguez Santiago was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico, in 1918 to devout Catholic parents. After a fire destroyed the family home, he was raised in his grandmother s house, where faith continued to be central to the lives of his family. He was the second of five siblings. At age 13 Carlos became afflicted with ulcerative colitis, which would bring him considerable suffering the remainder of his life. Although a top student, his chronic illness would hurt his high school studies, curtail his university education, and prevent him from entering the religious life and the priesthood, which is what he truly desired. He educated himself in the arts, science, philosophy, religion and music. He taught himself how to play the piano and organ so he could immerse himself in the sacred music he loved so much. Carlos worked as an office clerk in Caguas, at the Agriculture Experiment Station, part of the University of Puerto Rico. He spent most of his spare time and modest salary, however, evangelizing and sharing his love of Christ. He wrote and published religious education booklets at his own expense, organized Catholic study groups in various Puerto Rican towns and with prodigious energy encouraged the involvement of the laity in promoting the Catholic faith. He loved sacred liturgy. And at a time when the Mass and other liturgies were celebrated in Latin, he promoted liturgical renewal so that people would be able to hear and respond to the prayers of the liturgies in Spanish. He worked zealously for this renewal among bishops, clergy and laity alike, and he translated Latin and English liturgical texts into Spanish for his fellow Puerto Ricans. Carlos died of cancer in 1963, when he was only 44 years old. It has been said of him that his life was marked by deep joy despite his physical sufferings, and he always had a positive, encouraging attitude. He cared little for possessions and money. A number of people testified that he was responsible for their own growth in faith because of his evangelization efforts and the way he lived his life. Some even testified that Carlos zeal for Christ awakened in them their vocation to religious life. Carlos was beatified by Saint John Paul II in 2001. He is the first Caribbeanborn layman to be beatified, and the first Puerto Rican to be declared Blessed by the Church. His feast day is July 13. http://catholicstewardship.com/ MAHALO NUI LOA to all our church cleaners and flower ministers.
